BATCHLOR, Ellen M    unknown – June 19, 1914  NOTE: The spelling of last name changed from burials in Salem Cemetery to St Andrew’s Cemetery records, but I am keeping these records in order by first name for these family history links in Coe Hill area.  Did a family member later decide to add the letter ‘e’ , which  others followed over the years, or was it done by a clerk in recording a death, as so frequent in earlier records? Did a teacher or educators instruct students how to spell the name as they preferred it and  why the spelling of Batchlor died out?  Or were there two distinct unrelated family lines, as both spellings are found for those born in the 1840s. It is a location spelling. It was not carried forward in records for later years. No Batchlor or Batchelor burials in St Michael’s Graveyard in Coe Hill. This type of study is the fascination for genealogists, and why one must not lock down on the spelling of a last name. It is not uncommon to find up to five spellings of the same last name that changes in  Canadian history.

CROSBY, Murray Austin (Snort, Murrman) of Port Colborne passed away suddenly on Friday May 6, 2011 at his home in his 73rd year. Loyal husband to his wife Wilma, loving father to Pamela, Jennifer and Sarah and proud Papa to Allegra, Rylan, Jet, Jazmin, Jessica and Richard. Murray graduated with a BA from Queens and Masters from the University of Buffalo. He taught for 35 plus years at both McKay Senior Public and DeWitt Carter in Port Colborne. He enjoyed coaching Pee Wee hockey travel teams and later became Convenor of minor hockey. He played hockey for the Port Colborne Old Timers (Sailors) and the over 45 league at Ridley College. He also played slo-pitch for teams in both Port Colborne and Wainfleet. Murray loved horse racing, especially the Triple Crown which he will sadly miss this year. He was active with Santa’s Helpers and the Inter church Food Bank. He was a member of both the ushering and counting teams at Central United Church. Murray loved his wife Wilma with all of his heart since they were merely kids. He loved his daughters, their husbands and all of their friends. He was completely devoted to his 6 grandkids…..the best Papa around! He lived, loved and laughed every day. He was quick with a smile and a joke. He made everyone he encountered feel important. He will be missed entirely by those who loved him. He died with no regrets. Cremation has taken place. Burial St Andrew’s Cemetery, Coe Hill, Ontario

CROSBY, Wilma Margaret – January 16, 1940 – March 25, 2020

Wilma entered the world to parents, Bill & Pearl McCaw, and their oldest daughter, Fern of Coe Hill, Ontario. From a young age, Wilma was curious, independent and inquisitive. She attended elementary school at Coe Hill Public School, and secondary school at North Hastings High School in Bancroft. A born teacher, Wilma attended Teacher’s College in Peterborough, completed her first years in Apsley  under the tutelage of Pat Tucker.  All through life, there was one dashing individual–Murray Crosby–who would be her husband of 46 years. After moving to Port Colborne as newlyweds, both Wilma and Murray would teach a great many children in town.

Wilma attended Brock University for a Bachelor of Education, graduating with honours in 1984. Wilma enjoyed her five grandchildren (Allegra. Jessica, Rylan, Jet and Jazmin) as well as her three great grandchildren (Abraham, Owen and Levi). Wilma’s generous nature extended far beyond her own community (Food Bank; Santa’s Helpers), to include many causes: the David Suzuki Foundation, the NDP of Ontario and Canada, as well as the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and Covenant House. She was a caring friend and shoulder for anyone who needed her.

Wilma leaves behind her three, loving daughters: Pamela (Gordon), Jennifer (Rick), and Sarah (Tony). Wilma loved her family,  her vast extended family, and all of her dear, very close friends. As for her final wish, Wilma’s body was donated to the McMaster Anatomy Program, where her legacy of teaching continues through the marvels of science.  A celebration of Wilma’s life occurred in May. Note: see Fern Faul obit.

George IrishIRISH, George Delbert          May 15, 1925 – Jan 18, 2023

Delbert was the first born son of James Stanton Irish and Hannah Jane Irish ( Kelly; she went by Jennie). They lived with Delbert’s grandfather at his farm at Rose Island. When the farm was sold, they moved to Coe Hill and Delbert’s dad went to work for Armstrong’s Mill at Carson Lake near Millbridge, Ontario. Delbert quit school and went to work at the mill with his Dad. The family moved to Millbridge and Delbert and his brother Leslie lived there until 2013 when they moved to an apartment in Madoc. They moved to Caressant Care Nursing Home in Marmora in 2019.

Delbert did cut and sell slab wood; but his career continued to be the mill. While in Millbridge, the yard was filled with Delbert’s wind powered hand carved ornaments and his flowers. A nature lover, he fed the birds, turkeys and deer. The two brothers loved to visit friends and neighbours and were well respected by the community.

Delbert was a self taught, very talented carver who entered his work in County Fairs, winning prizes every year. His greatest accomplishment was an accurate carving of the Armstrong Mill and out buildings complete with furnishings, animals, vehicles, sleighs and logs which took him 30 years to finalize. They are on display at the North Hastings Museum in Bancroft.

He was predeceased by his parents. His brother Leslie, at 92, still lives at Caressant Care. He will be remembered by his brother Leslie, his relatives, long time friend Oscar Anderson and his many other friends.A special thank you to the staff at Caressant Care Nursing Home who gave him super Care while he lived there.

Visitation was held at Rushnell Funeral Home, Madoc (McConnell’s), 112 Durham St. S. on Saturday, January 28, 2023 from 12 noon to 1pm. Service followed  at 1pm. Reverend Michael Rice officiating. Spring burial St. Andrew’s United Cemetery, Coe Hill.

Upon their move to Belleville, she attended Ontario Business College from which she graduated, and entered clerical work in the city of Belleville. She was employed with Oliphant Electric, Canadian Pittsburgh Industries, Trudeau Motors and W.T. Hawkins, to name just a few. She continued working in the clerical field for 12 years. On July 6th, 1974, she married Terry Sprague of Big Island, near Demorestville, in Prince Edward County, and continued working in the clerical field for two more years. Upon the birth of their son, Jeffery Harold Sprague in 1976, she became a full-time housewife and mother until 1988, when she re-entered the work force as a Homemaker for All-Care Health Services, which she continued to do for approximately 10 years.

Continuing with her health care work, she pursued courses with her agency, as well as updating herself at night school to the position of Health Care Aid. She successfully completed her courses at Loyalist College, as well as updating her High School diploma in Picton in 1989, and obtaining an updated Ontario Secondary School Diploma. Nola Sprague also worked privately for individuals needing health care services, and worked with her husband in his nature tour business and did part time janitorial business on weekends and at night. She was known to say that all of her jobs were special to her, and that she loved and had fun with everything she did in life. One of her pastimes was the joy of writing poems and short stories about the value and concepts of her life and, most important, the lives of those people she touched. Her greatest goal was to be constructive in the lives of others.

Note:  A number of obituaries have been found for family members of Coe Hill residents who have spent their lives elsewhere.  It is difficult to determine if these folk  ever lived in the Coe Hill area, as birth location not given. People moved into the Coe Hill area at different times in their lives and sometimes left. Not everyone was born there. If you would like anyone added to these memories, simply request it. Thank you to those of you who send family history notes.
