Earl Gillespie June 16, 1908 – April 14, 1967 Maud M Nov 20, 1911 – July 21, 2004 J W Taylor Cem, Virginia

Earl Gillespie, born August 18, 1929, died peacefully at the University of Virginia Hospital on October 8, 2024.. He was predeceased by his parents, John Wrightly and Mabel Gillespie; and his sister, Gail Heinen. Devoted to his family, he is survived by his wife, Sylvia; daughter, Kim; son, Anthony; and brother, Richard. Born in Wildwood (TN), Earl was especially fond of his roots in southwest Virginia (Coeburn) where he grew up and attended high school. As a student writing in his high school newspaper, he observed, “It is up to the students . . . to see that Coeburn is always represented by an honest and clean team in all sports.” After a tour of duty in the United States Air Force, he graduated from Washington and Lee University and earned a Master of Education degree from the University of Virginia. He then returned to Coeburn High School to coach football, baseball, and basketball and serve as the school’s athletic director.
In 1961 Earl assumed duties as the first assistant executive secretary of the Virginia High School League (VHSL), the organization responsible for directing athletics and activities for the commonwealth’s public high schools. He was also the VHSL’s first supervisor of officials. Highly regarded for his knowledge and attention to athletic playing rules, he expanded services and provided training for more than 8,000 Virginia officials in 17 sports each year. Earl was named the League’s executive director in 1986, serving in that role until his retirement in 1994. Among numerous honors received by Gillespie were induction to the Virginia High School Hall of Fame (1994) and the National High School Hall of Fame (2005). Not surprisingly many of Earl’s passions and activities involved sports, athletic officiating, and University of Virginia teams. For more than 25 years he enjoyed officiating high school football games. He officiated high school basketball for 30 years; and well into his 80’s, Earl frequented the scorer’s table at U-Hall and later John Paul Jones Arena as the designated observer/evaluator of basketball crews for the Atlantic Coast Conference. Of course, he had season tickets at Scott Stadium for the Hoos’ football games and cheered the baseball team at Davenport Field at Disharoon Park. And Earl loved his weekly nine-hole rounds, often at Birdwood Golf Course.
An avid reader, Earl also derived great pleasure from serving as a Book Buddy, teaching local youth to read and enjoy books. He also volunteered with Meals on Wheels and was active in the United Methodist Church.

Frank Gillespie obit May 5, 1992 Lynchburg, VA

Frank Gillespie, May 19, 1935 – January 29, 2022, Arlingston, VA. Frank Gillespie, 86, passed away peacefully on January 29th, surrounded by family in Los Angeles, California. Francis Leo Gillespie was born on May 19th, 1935, in Cleveland, the son of Francis and Nora Gillespie. Frank was a 1953 graduate of Shaw High School in East Cleveland. In 1957 he received his Bachelor of Arts at Ohio University, where he was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity and served as its President.
After graduation, he worked as a teacher in the Cleveland area, then joined the Peace Corps as a member of their 2nd cohort in 1962. The Peace Corps took him to Thailand, where he met and fell in love with Urai Santitrakul, a fellow social studies teacher. Frank and Urai married in 1965 and began their 56 years together with an around-the-world honeymoon that included stops at the Taj Mahal, Rome, and Donegal, Ireland, to visit the extended Gillespie clan.
In 1964 Frank left the Peace Corps to work for United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Vietnam, where he was stationed in Binh Long province along the Cambodian border north of Saigon. Only 800 Americans, military or civilian, were then in Vietnam. Frank’s career of public service in the field of international development took his family to Laos, where they narrowly escaped an attack by the Pathet Lao at their home in Kengkok. Frank’s further postings took the family to Thailand, Indonesia, and Egypt, and he took assignments on his own in Vietnam, Bosnia, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Among his proudest accomplishments were the community projects he spearheaded such as the playground built in war-torn Sarajevo and the lifelong friendships he created with the people he met in the countries where he worked.
Frank’s Cleveland roots also brought him joy throughout his lifetime, and he took great pleasure in belting out the glee club songbooks of his younger days as he kept himself busy with the upkeep of the home he and Urai built in Arlington, Virginia. His family and friends will miss his sense of humor and wise counsel.
Frank is survived by his brothers and sisters, Kathleen (Colacarro), Gerald, Nonie (Oriti), and James. He leaves behind his wife, Urai, and three children: Lisa (Dan Hodgdon), Russell (Ruth), and Roslyn (Ed Easton). He was also a proud grandfather to Alexander, Aydin, Maya, and Summer.

Helen Anne Gillespie, (Caldwell), of Maidens, Va., passed away on December 30, 2022, after a prolonged illness. Helen was predeceased by her parents, John and Elizabeth Caldwell; older brother, Robert Caldwell; and sister-in-law, Amy Caldwell of Corpus Christi, Texas. She is survived by brother, Pat and Gina Caldwell, of Newport, Tenn.; brother, Bart Caldwell of Corpus Christi; sister-in-law, Angie Caldwell of Corpus Christi; son, Sean and Jennifer Gillespie of Chesapeake, Va.; daughter, Elizabeth and Andre Seale of Natick, Mass.; son, Kevin Gillespie and Irene Lutts of Quincy, Mass.; and seven adoring grandchildren, Miryam, Jack, Meaghan, Audrey, Kevin, Iain and Sage. Helen is also survived by her loving partner, Evan Chesterman of Richmond, Va.
Helen was a graduate of Flour Bluff High School in Corpus Christi, Texas. She enlisted in the Navy in 1967, and worked at the Naval Hospital in Newport, R.I. After her naval service, she attended nursing school at HACC and began her career as an emergency room nurse in Harrisburg, Pa. Helen went on to earn her
B.S.N. from Millersville University, and M.A. from Saint Francis University. Helen’s children are extremely proud of her academic achievements and her service to country and community.
“Helen on Wheels” (as she was known by her kids) was truly a force of nature. Her seemingly unlimited energy drove her professional life, but also her personal life. She loved to travel and take her children and grandchildren on adventures all over the country. Her unbridled optimism showed her the up-side of everything while her sheer force of will gave her the gumption to make that up-side happen. Anyone who ever left her a voicemail would hear at the end of her greeting: “Make it a great day!” Helen didn’t just have a great and fulfilling life. She MADE her life what she wanted it to be, always with a smile on her face (even when it was tough to do), endless laughs, and boundless love for her family. She truly was a positive influence and a role model to everyone around her.

James Preston Gillespie obit Sept 3, 1998 Lynchburg, VA

James Samuel Gillespie Jr. After a week spent with his family at the beach, James Samuel “Jim Sam” Gillespie, Jr., of Pounding Mill, Virginia, passed away July 17, 2022, at his daughter’s home in Cullowhee, North Carolina.
Born in Pounding Mill on November 3, 1937, Jim Sam grew up on the farm with family—his parents James Samuel Gillespie, Sr, Elizabeth Zeigler Gillespie, his sister Sarah and lots of Gillespie and Zeigler kin. There he worked hard and played hard, learning to fish, hunt, raise cattle and sheep, and run a farm. He attended grade school in Pounding Mill before heading to Richlands High School. Upon graduation, he followed in his father’s footsteps and went to VMI, Class of 1959, where he played football and ran track. He survived rat Chemistry and freshman English, graduating with a degree in Civil Engineering. He developed a deep love for VMI and the friends he made there would be some of the most important people in his life and in his family’s life. It was in Lexington that he also met Lucy Campbell, then a young physical education teacher, whom he would marry in 1962.
After VMI, he served in the United States Army as a captain in the armored division where he also coached base football teams and went to Jungle School in Panama. After the military, he returned to Virginia where he taught math and coached at Clifton Forge and South Hampton High schools. He then coached at VMI under his former coach, John McKenna. His college coaching career took him from VMI to West Virginia University and Duke. When his father died, Jim Sam left coaching and he and his family returned to Pounding Mill where he would farm for the rest of his life. As is the case with most farmers, he had other jobs, working in the coal ventilation business, running Hunter Paving, and serving as an officer for National Bank, formerly the Bank of Tazewell County. He was a lifelong supporter of the Tazewell County Fair, 4-H, serving on its board as well as that of the Virginia Farm Bureau. He also served on the board of Coal Creek, Coal Mountain, Tazewell Coal and Gas, Doran Development, and the G.W. Gillespie company. He grew up in the Pounding Mill Christian Church and was a longtime member of Richlands Presbyterian Church.
All of this work took a backseat to the job he loved the most—raising his family and being a loyal friend. With almost no exceptions, once he loved you, he always loved you. He was loyal and that loyalty brought with it a generosity of spirit and an honesty in equal measure. Classmates, teammates, former players, employees, and neighbors came into his life and stayed. His family stretched beyond the Gillespies. Over the years, his friends and his children’s friends were absorbed into his family. Most days found some “family” wandering in, sitting on the couch, and staying for stories. After his son, Sam, passed away, his friends—Brian, Camillus, Mike, Curt, and Mike–became family. Before that Dwayne Smith and recently Katie Lindsay. Beyond any doubt, he was most exceptional as a son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather.
In 1974, he came back to Pounding Mill to take care of his mother and farm. He and his wife, Lucy, were equal partners in life, laughing, arguing, and being best friends. As a father, he was devoted to his three children, teaching them to work hard, love fiercely, cry without shame, read voraciously, and to find joy and laughter most every day. As a father and grandfather, he was a constant and seamless part of our families.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim Sam and Elizabeth Gillespie, his wife Lucy Brett Campbell, and his son James Samuel Gillespie, III. He is survived by his sister Sarah Gillespie Seale and her husband Pep Seale, his daughters Elizabeth Gillespie McRae and Ann Brett Gillespie Strickland and their husbands Steve and Sam, and his granddaughters—Katherine Elizabeth McRae, Campbell Suzanne Strickland, Lucy Caroline McRae, Sarah Elizabeth Strickland, Charlotte Olivia Strickland, and Nora-Ann Gillespie Strickland.
Service was held at Richlands Presbyterian Church, Thursday July 21st at 2:00pm. Family received visitors at the church between noon and 2:00pm. Pallbearers were: Brian Froehlich, Camillus Musselman, Curt Crowder, Mike Phelps, Mike Weaver, Stephen Seale, Dick Phillippi, Steve Reithmiller, Jeff Gillespie, York Lindsay, Jim Huffman, Ray Nease, Tim Bandy, and Warren Williams. Judith Gillespie “Judi” Passed away on April 28, 2017. Judi was a dazzling beauty. Her effervescent joy for life beamed through her smile. All who knew her instantly fell in love with her warmth, intelligence and humor. Judi epitomized that long lost chic of times gone by – best personified by the celluloid heroes of Hollywood’s heyday – alluring, vibrant yet also aloof. Judith Ann Machala was born October 7, 1962, born into a loving Catholic family with three brothers and the second of three sisters. All proud Texans.
As a child, Judi studied at Saint Elizabeth of Hungary (K to 8) and Bishop Dunne High School (9 to 12). She attended Vanderbilt University on a full academic scholarship majoring in Russian and French, with an Archeology minor. She received her Bachelor’s of Arts in 1985 After graduation, she moved to Rome, Italy, eventually returning to fly for Delta Airlines as a Flight Attendant. While working on a flight in 1991, Judi was severely injured putting a halt on her budding modeling career and foray into sprint triathlons. By now, fluent in 5 languages, she continued her adventure travels until the toll of countless surgeries — over a 10 year period, led her to withdraw from public life. Judi continued her studies of ancient Egypt, archeology and astronomy. She became an active supporter of charities and environmental causes. Her passion to save the world’s oceans from overfishing, pollution and coral-bleaching was always at the forefront of her mind. Judi A. Gillespie is survived by her husband, Colonel King William Gillespie, USAF (Ret.) Her surviving siblings are Mark Machala (wife, Susan), Denise Machala Martelli, Tim Machala (wife, Sherie), Charles Frank Machala, III and Andrea Machala Rauch (husband, Tom).
