EARLY FAMILIES IN HASTINGS COUNTY, Ontario
John Gilroy, age 20 and George Gilroy, age 29, were living in Wollaston Twp by 1881. John disappeared, but George remained in the Coe Hill area all his life. He has descendants in the area to this day.
From a study of four local cemeteries, the persons born the earliest included: William Gunter, born 1808 and buried in Salem Pioneer Cemetery. Jonathan Waite born 1809 who is buried in Trinity Anglican Cemetery, then 1826 with birth of Garrett Puffer, who is buried in St Michael’s Cemetery. In 1833 Robert and Amanda Hawthorn were born the same year, and both are buried in St Andrew’s United Cemetery in Coe Hill. Where these individuals were born is not given, nor when they moved to Wollaston Twp, but they were early pioneers to this area. Other researchers of families in this area have added their work online, part of which has been provided in cemetery transcriptions on this website (top menu bar)
