Bruce Anthony Gillespie, On March 30, 2008, at St. Boniface Hospital, Bruce died at the tender age of 57. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Alison Preston; his mother, Elsie Gillespie; his sisters, Patti Gillespie, Janet Rodie, and Lois Gillespie; his brothers-in-law, Doug Rodie and John Preston, his niece Charmaine Rodie and nephews Sean Rodie, Max Preston and Zeke Preston, all of Winnipeg. Also surviving Bruce are one dear aunt and many loving cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his father, Gordon Gillespie in 2000. Bruce lived his whole life in Winnipeg except for three years on the west coast. For the last two decades he taught in the Creative Arts Department at Red River College where he touched a great many lives and hearts. For a time in the late seventies Bruce owned a store, Village Records, in a young Osborne Village. He was a passionate and generous lover of music. His collection was for sharing, along with his vast knowledge of all it contained. His beautiful singing voice and the drums were his main instruments and in the 60s and 70s he played in such bands as The Crossing, The Next of Kin, Live Lobster, and the formidable Chicken Noodle Multitude. Until recently Bruce practised with a group of friends that could go years without a gig, but when there was one it was worth waiting for.

He loved his home in Norwood where he lived with Alison and their two cats, Nils and Grrwalt. He watched birds there and grew watermelons and fed his friends great music and food and drink. Bruce was a wonderful cook and was known to drive his marinating flank steak all the way to Calgary to share it with friends. He kept us laughing and that may be what we remember most. But for sure when we hear a certain song on the radio or in our heads it will be Bruce that we feel stirring in our hearts, helping us never to forget. Many thanks to the nurses at CancerCare, St. Boniface. Bruce actually looked forward to chemo day and remained optimistic under the gentle care of those fine professionals. Thanks, also to an oncological nurse named Bonnie who appeared out of nowhere to help us one terrible day; and to Dr. Garnet Crawford and the nurses on the eighth floor, especially Deb and Gina. Our friends rallied around us like a small army of angels. Thanks to you all and especially to Chris, John, Eric and Jacquie. There was a gathering at Red River College, Princess St. Campus, in the north atrium/cafeteria on Friday, April 11 at 5:00 p.m.  : E.J Couto Co Funeral Directors, 680 Archibald Street.

Donna Elaine Gillespie, Lund. Born Nov 30, 1938. Passed June 5, 2023. It is with great sadness that we share the news of Donna’s passing. She was predeceased by her brother Gilmour and her son-in-law Roger. She leaves behind her children, Cheryl (Bruce Grewar), Colleen, Garth (Deanna); and grandchildren, Chelsey, Shona, Garth Jr. and Victoria; in addition to many friends, relatives and grandpets.

Donna lived in many places growing up, including Winnipeg, Elphinstone, Lynn Lake and Fort Saskatchewan. Upon high school graduation, she returned to Winnipeg on her own. She moved in with her Aunt Agnes, Uncle Alex and cousin Mave where she made many happy memories. She began working at CIBC as a banker before enrolling in Misericordia Nursing School.

Her career as a nurse began in Deloraine, and later back in Winnipeg in public health. She particularly enjoyed her work as a school nurse. She was an active member of the nurses’ union and spent a number of years on the pension advisory committee, work she was proud to do. As a single mother, Donna worked tirelessly to provide for her three children, and taught them the importance of hard work and advocacy.

Donna loved being a nurse but being a grandma (or GMA) was her favourite. After retiring from nursing, she took on the role of full-time grandma, where she nannied for her twin grandchildren, Chelsey and Shona, for many years. It was important to her that she also had a presence in the lives of her grandchildren in Calgary and will be remembered for making countless road trips to visit them over Christmases and summers.

She enjoyed many hobbies throughout her life. Her commitment to and love for flower gardening was learned on the farm from her grandmother, and later passed on to her children and grandchildren. She was also a very good seamstress, knitter and baker. She volunteered for many years as an usher at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre.

Donna will be remembered for her welcoming spirit, quick wit and selfless love for others. She always had an open-door policy at her home – everyone was welcomed in for a meal, cup of coffee, or glass of wine. She made friends everywhere she went – nursing school, airplanes, shops, her local Salisbury House; Donna had a true gift for connecting with just about anyone.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to Donna’s neighbours, with a special thank you to Ben, for all their help and support throughout the years.

Donna’s Celebration of Life took  place on June 22, 2023, at 2:00 p.m., at Charleswood United Church, 4820 Roblin Boulevard. Thompson in the Park Funeral Home,

Dr Douglas Gillespie
Dr Douglas Gillespie

Dr Douglas C Gillespie   June 27, 1926 – September 25, 2013.  Doug died suddenly in the early morning of September 25. He is survived by Rosalie, his wife of 59 years, his daughters Janet and Megan, and son Alan. Doug had obtained a PhD in microbiology and biochemistry from Western Reserve University in 1960. He worked as a research scientist for Agriculture Canada at the Experiment Farms in Ottawa from 1960 to 1967. In 1967 he then took a position as a research scientist at the Freshwater Institute in Winnipeg. From 1976 to 1982 he worked at Wardrop Engineering, then from 1983 to 1990 at Manitoba Hydro. In both jobs he was the environmental officer. He enjoyed reading, and for a number of years grew orchids. In his later years developed a liking for TV. There was an informal gathering in his memory afterwards.

Douglas J. Gillespie was born on October 25, 1948, in Dryden, Ontario, to his parents Eldred and Gwendoline Gillespie where he was one of three siblings to include his brother Gary and his sister Gloria. Douglas passed away, while with family and loved ones, on February 28, 2025, in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Doug is survived by his sister Gloria, brother-in-law Gene, his sisters-in-law Diane and Bonnie, his sons Bradley and Timothy, daughters-in-law Teresa and Heather and cherished grandchildren Justice, Jackson, and Ava. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews who were a very important part of his life.

Doug retired as a Warrant Officer from the Royal Canadian Air Force after over 20 years of dedicated service and went on to additional aerospace work with Bristol Industries and global travel. Being a career military member led Doug to travel the world and bring his family to many new places to live and adventure to be had.

An annual shiny light for Doug was their extended trips to Mexico with family and friends. These trips occupied much of the conversations for the remaining portion of the year, reminiscing old laughs and planning new ones with the people he held dear to his heart. Fortunately, when Doug passed, he was in Mexico and in the company of people he cared for deeply.

Doug’s wife, Karen, passed 1.5 years ago and his heart never recovered. He has now gone to join his wife, Karen, who has been saving a spot on the beach for him.

A Celebration of Life was held at 11:00 a.m. on May 10, 2025, at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main St, Winnipeg, MB R2V 3S5.

Enid Gillespie
Enid Gillespie

Enid Phyllis Gillespie  (nee Christophersen) (Dubois),  It is with great sadness that we announce the passing on March 17, 2013 of our much-loved Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother and Aunty Enid Gillespie in her 85th year. She was predeceased by her parents Christopher and Ida; her sisters Minna, Ella, Lily, Alice, Betty; her brothers Earl, Dan and Hughe, and her husband, George. Enid is survived by her children Jack (Kim Monson), Gayaline Minch (Kevin), Tim (Leah) and Mikel (Pearl Tomchuk), ten grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Carol Christophersen, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins across Canada.

Enid was born and raised in the West End of Winnipeg and lived most of her life here. She recalled fondly participating in track and field at General Wolfe and Daniel MacIntyre. Mom left school to work at CN Telegraphs just after the Second World War, where she met our father, Fred. After her children were born Enid worked at a variety of places including St. Vital School Division, Perth’s laundry plant and Duffy’s Taxi. Enid was very civic-minded, serving two terms on the Board of Winnipeg School Division No. 1, and for a time as President of the West End Seniors Centre. Enid was one of the early members of Sweet Adelines in Winnipeg. She was a 40 plus year member of Alano Group. Mom was an excellent seamstress, sewing clothes for the whole family in the early days, including dress pants, shirts and coats, and was known for her trademark, self-designed and crafted colourful outfits right to the end. She was also very musical, playing the accordion and piano, with a wonderful singing voice. Always feisty and independent of spirit, in mid-life Enid took up body-building and skydiving, although the accidental death of a friend persuaded her to give that up after a few jumps. Mom had her own unique sense of fashion and colour, and in the last decade was a self-taught oil painter. A long-time member of the Norman Art Group, she exhibited in several venues around the city and did sell some of her bold artwork but gave most of her finished works to friends and family to enjoy.

Mom took great pride in her large and loving family, and always worked at keeping everyone connected. Never shy, you always knew when Mom was at a family gathering, and she never hesitated to give a candid opinion – always meant with love, of course. Enid enjoyed very much the company and friendship of her card-playing buddies at Lions Place this past year and a half, as well as those who joined her at meals or for singsongs around the piano. The family would like to thank Theresa Watson for her care and friendship to Mom for the last 15 years. According to her wishes, cremation has taken place and there was a private family service lakeside at Gimli this summer. We love you Mom/Grandma and will miss you very much. God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.

I will miss you more than you know. I thank you for always being there for me unconditionally. I love you and I will see you again someday in another place. Until then, this is not goodbye, but until we meet again . Wojcik’s All Belief’s Faiths Funeral Chapel, 897 – 4665

Florence Millidge Gillespie, 1909 – 2001 Florence Jane Lamb Gillespie, nee Millidge, formerly of Irving Place, North Kildonan, died peacefully in her 92nd year at Victoria General Hospital on January 2, 2001. The dearly loved wife of the late Robert A. Gillespie, who predeceased her in 1975. She was the much loved mother of Margaret, Barbara, Robert, Richard and Frederick; and grandmother extraordinaire of Patrick, Sarah Jane, Caitlin, Rebecca, Annabel, Aislinn, Elizabeth, Nora, Richard Jr. and Drew.

Florence Gillespies Empire Loyalist family of St. John, New Brunswick, founded one of the countrys principal shipyards at Millidgeville, N.B., building many of the famous Tall Ships that sailed the trade routes of the world. Her father, Arthur Hamilton Millidge, came west to eventually settle in Hazelridge, MB, and marry Helen Agnes Lamb, where Florence and sister Evelyn were born. She attended her first school at Cooks Creek, completing her education at Montrose Academy in Scotland, her mothers birthplace. Upon graduating from the Manitoba Normal School, she taught with great pleasure and success at both Anola and Hazelridge Schools. Sixty happy years were spent at 155 Irving Place, which would be a haven and gathering place for family and friends; a welcome home that witnessed weddings, christenings and wonderful Christmas parties. Her creative nature was evident in both garden and home which reflected a style uniquely her own.

Florence was an accomplished and dedicated artist, receiving her first training as a watercolourist whilst in Scotland. This led to her lifelong pursuit of painting that included an active membership of the Winnipeg Art Gallery. Many of her best loved landscapes were of Gull Harbour on Hecla Island, which was for 75 years her most precious and treasured summer camp, where as a young girl she first began to visit her aunt, Deaconess Sarah E. Millidge. Following the establishment of Hecla Provincial Park in 1972, the family summer vacations continued on Lake Winnipeg at Hnausa. She was married in 1934 at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, where she maintained a lifelong devotion and loyalty by her attendance at service, her activities in the ACW, and in particular, as a life member of the Chancel Guild of which she was president at various times over the years. Her unflappable demeanour provided an anchor for the family. We owe much to her as a family, for her steadfast love and support – with our thanks we say farewell – dear Granny! She will be remembered with great affection and love by those of her extended family – new members and old and numerous friends. Our thanks to the staff of the Convalescent Home of Winnipeg for their always kind and thoughtful care. She will be lovingly laid to rest at St. Johns Cathedral Cemetery by pallbearers Robert A. Gillespie, Richard M. Gillespie, Frederick W.A. Gillespie, John S. Cundell, Marvin E. Tiller, Patrick R. Tiller. Burial service was at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Donald Street and Graham Avenue, 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 12. Officiating clergy: the Rev. Robin Mather, Rector and the Rev. Ronald McCollough, Pastoral Assistant. Thomson Funeral Chapel.

Fred Gillespie passed away peacefully at Villa Youville in Ste. Anne, MB, at the age of 102 years, on December 25, 2001. He leaves to cherish his memory one sister-in-law Geraldine Gillespie (John) several nieces and nephews and “my girl” Betty and her family. He was predeceased by his parents, six brothers, three sisters and his beloved Laura. Mr. Gillespie, the last member of a large family, was a proud Canadian farmer all his working years. He also operated a Cedar Camp north of Middlebro for many years. He was a kind and gentle man who always thought of others first. He was able to repair any machinery, and carpentry was an enjoyable task. He also took great pride in the care of his garden and yard. Mr. Gillespie was born July 1, 1899, in Winnipeg to parents of Irish decent. He married Laura Powell on November 22, 1936. Mr. and Mrs. Gillespie lived in their home for 64 and one half years until Mrs. Gillespies passing on July 4, 2001. On November 29, 2001, Mr. Gillespie moved to Villa Youville where he received the care needed to continue his journey on earth. Funeral service has taken place on Saturday, December 29 at 2:00 p.m. at the Sprague Baptist Church in Sprague, MB, with Pastor John Klassen officiating. Viewing took place one hour before service. Interment will follow at the Sprague Community Cemetery.  . Arrangements entrusted to Loewen Funeral Chapel of Steinbach.

Geraldine Mary Gillespie, nee Whittingham. 1906 – 2002 It is with regret and sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Gertrude Mary (Whittingham) Gillespie, formerly of Winnipeg, on Tuesday, August 6, 2002 at Pinawa Hospital at the age of 96. Gertrude was born in the town of Stafford, Staffordshire, England and came to Manitoba in 1908 with her Mother and Uncle to join her Father who had settled here before them. The family lived in various places in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Gertrude left home at an early age to find work as a nanny and helper. She married Walter Stevenson in 1929 and resided in Souris, MB with their four children. In 1943, Gertrude moved to Winnipeg with three of her children and married Harry Allen who passed away in 1965. She married Donald Raymond (Tony) Gillespie in 1974 who passed away in 1980.

During her early years in Winnipeg, Gertrude owned and ran Gerties Coffee Shop and worked at Rice Knitting Mills, Helmsdale Pharmacy, Tamblyn Pharmacy and Glows Pharmacy from where she retired in 1971. Gertrude was a life member of the Imperial Veterans Legion, Branch No. 84 where she spent many happy hours playing and running the Bingo and playing cards. She was also a former life member of the Royal Purple of Canada, Winnipeg Lodge No. 12. She has been a member of Crescent Fort Rouge United Church for several years. While living in Winnipeg, Nanny, as she was lovingly called by her family, enjoyed Sunday family dinners and especially the participation of her great-grandson Danny. She treasured receiving and viewing pictures of all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and displayed them with much pride. If you were a member of our extended family, birthdays and anniversaries were always remembered with a specialized card. These events were important to her. Nanny was an avid Bingo player and loved word puzzles and playing rummy and cribbage. She played rummy right up until her death and took great delight in her many wins. The oldest of 13 children, Gertrude was predeceased by her parents, John and Gertrude; sisters, Violet, Beatrice and Peggy; and brothers, John, Bill and Albert. Two siblings died in infancy. She is survived by brothers, Henry (Brandon) and George (England) sisters, Pearl (Brandon) and Joyce (Onanole). Mom (Nanny) will be lovingly remembered and cherished by sons, Merrill (Ottawa), Delwyn (Vegreville) daughters, Arlene (Winnipeg) and Marilyn (Great Falls) daughter-in-law, Betty; son-in-law, Clifford; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She will also be remembered and missed by her many nieces and nephews: especially Joyce Durston and Doreen Grieve who were like daughters. Cremation has taken place with a private family interment held at Riverland Cemetery, near Lac Du Bonnet. A celebration of Gertrudes life was held at Crescent Fort Rouge United Church, Nassau and Wardlaw, Winnipeg, on Monday, August 12 at 2:00 p.m. Sobering Funeral Chapels,  Beausejour 268-3510 or Man.

Gordon Denis Gillespie
Gordon Denis Gillespie

Gordon Denis Gillespie November 16, 1937 – January 29, 2021. Gordie” as he was affectionately known, after a brief battle with Covid-19, passed away at his nursing home. He leaves his three children, Cheryl, Colleen, Garth; wife Donna; grandchildren, Shona and Chelsey, Garth Jr.; Victoria; son-in-law Roger (deceased 2016), son-in-law Bruce, and daughter-in-law Deanna.

Gordie had an encyclopedic mind and would always impress with his knowledge. After scoring 100 percent in his grade 12 year he went on to become a CGA with Federated Co-Op, BACM, and Canada Revenue Agency where he was elected a union head. He was well respected in Ottawa during this role and was instrumental in securing better pay and pensions for the workers. After leaving the CRA he continued work as an accountant in private practice and was contributory in supporting the banning of illegal searches. Gordie always had a deep conviction for right and wrong and would often help friends as they needed with legal situations.

Although stricken with dementia since 2009, he could still recite his military number for his service as a reservist, for which he was very proud. He enjoyed golf, curling, cycling, walking, and having a pint and a good chat, preferably about history or the Blue Bombers. He said camping with his family was some of his happiest memories.
His quick wit and subtle humour will be remembered and missed.
Burial of his ashes was placed near his mother in Dominion City.

Gordon Frederick Gillespie, March 31, 1926 – March 1, 2000 With profound sadness, the Gillespie family announces the passing of their good friend, husband and father. Gordon is survived by his wife of fifty years, Elsie; son Bruce (Alison Preston) daughters, Patti (Campbell Alexander), Janet (Doug Rodie), and Lois; and his sister Pat Gagnon. His love, generosity, humour and good advice will be remembered in the hearts and minds of his extended family of relatives, friends and business associates. Gordon was a talented professional engineer whose legacy lives on in many construction projects throughout Manitoba. He lived in Winnipeg all his life, loved the city and supported many local arts and sports organizations. He followed the city’s progress with genuine enthusiasm and concern. Cremation has taken place and Gordon requested no service.

Kirk was also active in the community, having served as President and other executive roles at the Selkirk Curling Club over many decades.  He was a proud member of the Selkirk Volunteer Fire Department for 30 plus years. He took several bus trips with Fay and friends over the years, travelling to the east coast, Alaska, and the southern US.  Great trips were also taken to Hawaii, Nashville, Greece, Denmark, Switzerland, and to many other locations to watch World Curling events wherever they were held.

As a young father, Kirk fought and beat cancer.  However following heart surgery, Kirk suffered a stroke in 2006, leaving him without the ability to speak.  Never one to complain, Kirk moved forward with any and all of life’s challenges with a smile on his face and warmth in his heart for those around him.

In 2013 Kirk and Fay moved from the house on Berrisford to the Cambridge House seniors apartment where they were surrounded by old and new friends.

Lorena Gillespie
Lorena Gillespie

Lorena Eileen Gillespie (Shore) (Cameron), (Lori). August 26, 1936 – July 16, 2022. It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we, her dear friends, announce the passing of Lorena (Lori) Gillespie.
She was predeceased by her parents, Russell and Ida Cameron, brother Dennis, husband Fred Shore and goddaughter Dr. Shannon Green. Lori was born in Carievale, Saskatchewan, the center of farming country. The Dirty Thirties over shadowed her early years, a bleak time where hard work, tenacity and living with hope was the normal way of life and no doubt, instrumental in forming the woman she became.

Following graduation from Business College she began working at the Grey Hound bus terminal in Brandon, Manitoba where she met the love of her life, first husband Fred Shore. After moving to Winnipeg, she and Fred owned and operated the Texaco service station in St. Boniface. Tragically, on November 13, 1962 Fred was killed in a work related accident. Shortly thereafter, Lori began her career in health care. In 1969 she became the Business Manager of the newly formed Physicians’ Business Office at the then Winnipeg General Hospital (now Health Sciences Centre). In the mid 1980s she made a move to the Winnipeg Clinic where she remained the Business Administrator until her retirement in 2001. During her career, she was actively involved with the local Medical Group Management Association as well as the MGMA of Canada where she at one point held the title of President.

Her strong work ethic and integrity were well known. However, Lori was more than that. She was an incredible person whose kindness, generosity and classiness shone brightly. She was an entertainer extraordinaire and was famous for her New Year’s gatherings. The house glowed with light and was filled with the scent of cranberry candles and pine wreaths; the table laden with delicacies. She loved attending the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and was an avid fan of the Blue Bombers. She also enjoyed watching curling. Those of us blessed with her friendship have shared many wonderful times and will carry fond memories with us always.

Lori is survived by several cousins, her goddaughter Lori Unger, whom she loved deeply, dear friends, Dick and Barb Hoy, Bob and Mary Kreigsley, Kay Rokala, Wayne and Dawn Byron, Ed and Marsha Mathison, Joanne Enger as well as former husband Rob Gillespie and his family.

Heartfelt thanks to cardiologist, Dr. Michael McGregor for his compassion and efforts during this very difficult time.
Cremation has taken place. Following Lori’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.
