The Honourable E ALASTAIR WILLIAM GILLESPIE, P.C., O.C., DLitt  May 1, 1922 – August 19, 2018

After an outstanding innings of 96 and having “captained the side very well”, Dad quietly left the field of play in Toronto for the last time.  Devoted husband of Diana Christie Clark for 63 years, and loving father of Cynthia Webb (Ian) and Ian (Lynn).  Extremely proud and adored grandfather of Vanessa (Chip), Katie (Nick) and David Webb, Meredith (Pat) and Ian Gillespie.  Beloved great-grandfather (GG) of Maddie and Finn Greene, Sarah, Michael, Emma and William Gambarotta, and Georgia and William Glinski.  Fondly remembered by Shirley and Gavin Clark, Ian and Nancy Clark, Sheila Clark and many nieces and nephews.  Predeceased by his cherished brothers, Ian (WWII) and Andrew and dear sister, Catriona.

Born in Victoria, British Columbia, son of Erroll and Catharine (Oliver) Gillespie, Dad attended St. Michael’s School and graduated from Brentwood College in 1941.  He briefly attended University of BC before entering Royal Roads Naval College for Officer Training in 1941 (RCNVR).  Attaining the rank of Term Lieutenant in 1942, he served on naval convoys across the North Atlantic.  Following the death, in action, of his brother Ian, an RCAF Beaufighter pilot on December 22, 1943, he joined the Fleet Air Arm as a fighter pilot flying Corsairs.

After the war, he attended McGill University (BCOM) and during his final year met the love of his life, the beautiful Diana Clark on a blind date. “She is one in a million”, he wrote to his parents and they were married in 1947.  Having been selected as a Rhodes Scholar from B.C., they left for Oxford,  England, where he read Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Queen’s College.

Returning to Toronto with an Oxford M.A., Dad began his business career at W. J. Gage & Company, a leading educational publisher in Canada.  He moved up the ladder rapidly becoming a Vice-President and Director.  In his spare time, he and some friends formed Coffee-Mat Services, an automatic coffee vending enterprise.  Terrific value at 10 cents a cup with real cream, Dad would hasten to add.  If not busy enough, he also taught Marketing courses at the University of Toronto Business School and later earned his Masters of Commerce degree.  His business career moved to the conglomerate Canadian Corporate Management as a Vice-President and he served as President of several operating subsidiaries.

He described his parents as being “quite exceptional, stimulating and far-sighted” and having instilled in him the importance of public service and volunteerism, he ran as a Liberal candidate for the Federal riding of Etobicoke in 1968 and was elected to the House of Commons in Prime Minister Pierre E. Trudeau’s government.  In 1971, he was appointed the first Minister of State for Science and Technology.  He was re-elected in 1972 and 1974 and served as Minister of Industry, Trade and Commerce (1972-1975) and Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources (1975-1979).

After leaving politics, following defeat in the 1979 election, he returned to business as Chairman of the brewer, Carling O’Keefe Limited, Chairman of the National Westminster Bank of Canada, and Chairman of the Scotia Coal Synfuels consortium,  as well as serving on the board of other private corporations.  In the early 1980’s, Dad established Scotia Synfuels to acquire and rehabilitate the former Gulf Oil Refinery at Point Tupper, Nova Scotia.  Disappointed that his vision could not be fully realized for the benefit of Cape Breton and the Atlantic provinces, he and the Board of Directors made the decision to sell the properties in 1992.  He returned to the beer business in 1995 and with W.P. Wilder, acquired an interest in Creemore Springs Brewery,  which they subsequently sold ten years later after having received assurances the highly successful microbrewery would not move from its wonderful location in Creemore, Ontario.

His involvement in community service was extensive.  He served on many boards including: the National Ballet School, the Canadian Paraplegic Association, Lyndhurst Hospital, The Champlain Society, the Scottish Studies Foundation, The Gage Research Institute, and was President of the Canadian Opera Company.

In 1998, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada for his “maverick entrepreneurial spirit”, amongst other accolades.

Other significant recognition included receiving the ‘Scot of the Year Award’ in 2003 from the Scottish Studies Society and the degree of Doctor of Letters, honoris causa, from Guelph University in 2008.

A highly accomplished rugby and cricket player from his Brentwood College and Royal Roads days, Dad continued with squash, tennis, skiing, fishing, golf and bridge which he enjoyed immensely with his family and many friends.

Other than British Columbia, his favourite retreat was his country property ‘Highwood’.  It became the gathering place for five generations of family and their friends.  He relaxed on weekends by undertaking various projects to continuously improve the property.  He was passionate about preserving the rural environment and supported local initiatives such as the Oak Ridges Moraine Land Trust and Green Durham Association.

In his eighties and underscoring the importance he attached to family history, he wrote: ‘Made in Canada – a Businessman’s Adventures in Politics’ as a reference for his descendants.  It turned into a somewhat larger project than he first envisioned and was published in 2009.

He will always be remembered for his warmth, charm, generosity, sense of humour and distinguished good looks. The family is very grateful to Elmo, Dad’s caregiver and companion of nine years, and Emy for their compassionate care.  We also wish to thank the capable and considerate staff at Christie Gardens where Dad resided for a short period of time.

The family will receive friends at the Humphrey Funeral Home A.W. Miles – Newbigging Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Friday, September 14th.  A celebration of life will be held at Christ Church Deer Park in Toronto on Saturday, September 15th at 2:00 p.m.

Gary Ernest Gillespie, “Gus”  March 28, 1940 – June 22, 2023 Our wonderful Gus passed away surrounded by family, at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, after a courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara (Backus); and his devoted sons and daughters-in law, Daniel and Rachel, and Adam and Gillian. He was the proud and much-loved Grandpa of James, Leah and Claire, who will all miss his cuddles and stories. He also leaves behind his sister, Mary Zadow (predeceased by Larry); sister-in-law, Gail Clark (predeceased by Bob Backus); Dave and Thom Pardoe, and a wide circle of extended family and friends.

A special thanks to his oncologist, Dr. Lisa Hicks, for her compassionate care. Gus was born to Stanley Gillespie and Helen (VanBridger) in Winchester, Ontario. At age six, his family moved to Morrisburg, where he spent an idyllic childhood. Upon leaving high school, Gus enrolled at Royal Military College and spent his first two years at Royal Roads in Victoria, BC, then his second part at Royal Military College in Kingston, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering degree. In the summers, he attended pilot training at Cold Lake, Alberta. He spent four years with 425 Squadron at CFB Bagotville, Quebec, as a front-line fighter pilot with the RCAF, protecting Canadian airspace as part of the RCAF’s NORAD mission, then four years as an instructor at the Aerospace Systems School in Winnipeg. Upon leaving the Air Force, he enrolled in the MBA program at McMaster University where he was President of his graduating class.

He had a long and fulfilling career in management consulting, first with Woods Gordon & Co., then with Ernst & Young, and finally his own successful consulting business. During his career, he earned his P.Eng., FCMC, sat on several boards of directors and served a term as President of the Ontario Institute of Management Consultants. He maintained close friendships with many colleagues over the years. Gus was an avid sailor and racer who enjoyed almost fifty years as a member of Ashbridge’s Bay Yacht Club. He rarely missed his weekly golf foursome with friends. and preferred to walk the course, rarely using a cart. He skied with the “Love to Ski” club for many years, travelling all over North America and Europe on ski trips. Gus loved flying his Cessna 177RG for business and fun. He and Barb travelled all over the world for many years, making new friends along the way. In the end, Gus expressed contentment that he had led a great life full of love, fun, laughter and adventures. Isn’t that what we all want? Service was held at 10:30 a.m. on July 8, 2023, at Pine Hills Cemetery and Funeral Centre, 625 Birchmount Road, Toronto. Gus’s remains were interred at the Toronto Necropolis Cemetery in a private ceremony.

JObituary of Mrs. Johanna Hermina Gillespieohanna Hermina Gillespie (nee Evertman). April 14, 1942 to December 8, 2016.

Johanna died peacefully on December 8th, 2016 at the Chartwell Wynfield Long Term Care Residence in Oshawa, at the age of 74. Survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Frederick Gillespie, she will also be greatly missed by her sons Gregory (Marci) and Peter (Marcy), and grandsons Finnian and Aidan. Johanna was predeceased by her father, Johannes Evertman, and mother, Maria Evertman (nee Noordkamp), as well as her brothers Gerry and John. She is survived by her siblings Inie, Mary, and Herman. She will also be fondly remembered by many of her brothers- and sisters in-law, nieces, and nephews in the extended Gillespie and Evertman families in Canada, the United States, and Holland. Johanna was born in Losser, the Netherlands, and immigrated to Canada with her family at the age of 11. She grew up in Toronto, and after marrying Fred they settled in Oshawa to raise their family. Johanna worked as a medical secretary and later as a health records technician at the Oshawa General Hospital. She loved nature and camped nearly every summer of her life. She also enjoyed travelling and cooking. However, her greatest joy was being a mother, and she often remarked that her favourite time was her years at home when her boys were young. In her retirement she became a prolific amateur watercolour artist and her paintings brighten the homes of many family and friends. The family wishes to express its thanks to Dr. Reed and the staff in the McLaughlin Bay at Wynfield for the compassionate care they provided. A funeral Mass was celebrated by Father Eric Mah at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church in Oshawa on December 12th, 2016. A private committal occurred later.

Lenore lived a full, rich life, travelling to all corners of the world.  She grew up on a farm in Perth County during the Depression and Second World War, attending Stratford Normal School and the University of Western Ontario.  Lenore’s first post was teaching the primary grades in one half of a two room school in Hickson, Ontario.  The other room was taught by one of her normal school classmates who to Lenore’s lifelong chagrin was given the role of school principal despite their identical qualifications.  Lenore got over that sufficiently to marry him and launch what would become an inspiring 50 year partnership with Hadden.  While Hadden continued his career in education, Lenore took over everything else.    The skills learned farming during the Depression were put to good use as she took over the finances, did all household repairs, sewed the clothing, refinished and reupholstered furniture, grew vegetables and hung out her laundry on the clothesline despite the mores of freshly minted suburbs.  She inspired her three children to challenge themselves and develop their individual dreams.  She loved playing bridge, antiques, curling and the rustic cottage life on Black Lake every summer.  Lenore and Hadden retired to their dream country house in Haliburton, enjoying community work, running a bed and breakfast, wood lot management, grandchildren, maple syrup, gardening, and bridge.  A talented painter who left no landscape unpainted and an adept pianist, Lenore loved the arts in all their forms.  After Hadden’s death Lenore continued to enjoy her life in Haliburton eventually meeting her companion the late Jim Potter.

The family received friends at the Humphrey Funeral Home, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 5th.  A service was held on Monday, November 6th at Timothy Eaton Memorial Church,  230 St. Clair Avenue West, Toronto, at 2:00 p.m.

Mary Adele Gillespie, February 8, 1920 – December 6, 2022 Adele lived an independent, full life, with good humour, grounded in faith. Adele was born in Toronto, graduated from the Loretto College School and the University of Toronto, and worked at the North American Life Assurance Company until her retirement. Adele was an avid golfer, and a life member of the Scarborough Golf Club. She spent many happy winter vacations with friends playing golf on Sanibel Island, Florida. Adele was generous with her time and care for her friends and many cousins. She had a quick wit and loved to laugh. Adele enjoyed music and mystery novels and had a keen interest in current affairs. She started her day with the Globe and Mail opinion pages and crossword puzzle until after her 100th birthday. When she turned 90, Adele retired her golf clubs and moved to the Russell Hill Retirement Residence, where she found a group of good friends who shared a dinner table, bridge games, movies, outings to concerts, and, eventually, 100th birthday parties. Adele was predeceased by her parents, Edith and George Gillespie of Toronto; her brothers, George and Howard Gillespie; her nephew, George Gillespie; and her cousins, Joan and Claire Snetsinger, and Tony Wells. Gillespie, Rauni Irene b 1928, passed away peacefully and gracefully, surrounded by family at her side on Sunday, September 25, 2016 at the age of 88. She was the loving wife of Eric (deceased) and partner of Reg (deceased). Rauni was a free spirit who lived life to the absolute fullest. She loved to travel, having seen all four corners of the globe. Closer to home, she loved going to the movies (it was not unusual for her to go to four a day during TIFF), the Ballet, the Opera, and if there was a new theatre production, regardless if it was in New York, London or locally, there was a good chance she would have a ticket. She was a sports enthusiast, including being a golfer at Lambton Golf and Country Club. She loved to travel to Wimbledon to cheer for her favourite Roger Federer and she immensely enjoyed her afternoons of bridge with her many long time friends. She was an artist, enjoyed her champagne, never had a day go by without chocolate, was a woman who spoke her mind and she had a fabulous sense of humour and style. She also had tremendous generosity for various causes and charities. As per Rauni’s wishes, “no fuss, no muss, no unnecessary sadness.”

ROBERT DOUGLAS (“SID”) GILLESPIE
Born in Colborne, Ontario: November 10, 1931
Passed away: January 16, 2018.Sid is survived by Marion, his devoted wife and partner of 62 years, his daughters Susan (Alec Zimmerman) and Cynthia (Stephen Shea), grandchildren Jason Prendergast (Amanda Griffis), Blake Prendergast, Lily MacLeod and Calder MacLeod, step-grandchildren Megan Shea and Caragh Shea, and sister-in-law Dr. Margaret MacMurdo McMillan (widow of Alan); and was predeceased by his brothers Bill and Don.

Born to William S. Gillespie and Ruby (née Grant), Sid was raised on the family farm on Shelter Valley Road near Grafton, Ontario, which he continued to maintain and enjoy with Marion and the family until his death.  A student of the local one-room schoolhouse, Sid’s character was shaped early on: hard-working, self-reliant, humbly self-confident, patient, generous, principled, a man of faith oriented toward his community and his family.  Sid was understanding of others, but demanding of himself.  A gentleman through and through.

Naturally adept at maths and sciences, Sid attended the Royal Military College, earning his wings as a navigator and graduating with a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering.  It was while spending his summers posted to Navigation School in Summerside, PEI that he met Marion MacMurdo at a golf course.  They were married on the first weekend following Sid’s graduation from RMC in 1955.  Thus began their lifetime together, often spent on the golf courses of PEI and with their friends at Thornhill Golf and Country Club, where he served as President in 1976.

Sid obtained his engineering degree, and later his MBA, from the University of Toronto, and while there was recommended by a professor to Jim MacLaren of James F. MacLaren Ltd., then one of Canada’s largest environmental consulting companies.  Sid remained at MacLaren for 27 years, becoming President in 1978.  He founded MacViro Consultants Inc. in 1989, serving as its President until he retired in 2006.  Owing to Sid’s unquestioned integrity, he was retained by Cole Engineering in 2009 to provide advice and guidance to its senior management team, serving for 7 years until finally retiring at age 85.

Sid was recognized by the Association of Consulting Engineers of Canada with the Beaubien Award for his outstanding contributions to that Association and the advancement of consulting engineering in Canada.  He also served on several committees established by the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario.  Sid was ahead of his time in his focus on environmental concerns and many of the modern comforts of city life, including sanitary water supply, sewage treatment plants and municipal heating systems, were built under his supervision at home and abroad.

Sid will be remembered by the staff and community of Timothy Eaton Memorial Church, the home to his faith, to which he offered decades of service as Clerk of Session, Deputy Chair of the Board of Trustees and a member of the Council. The family would like to thank Dr. Ken Gamble and Dr. Srikala Sridhar for the care and comfort that they offered Sid.

A visitation was held at the Humphrey Funeral Home, A. W. Miles, Newbigging Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 23rd. Funeral service in TIMOTHY EATON MEMORIAL CHURCH, 230 St. Clair Avenue West, Toronto at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 24th, with reception that followed in the Flora McCrea Eaton Auditorium.

Travis Robert Gillespie
July 16, 1984 – September 14, 2022It is with profound sadness, we announce the tragic passing of Travis Gillespie, age 38, following a collision on his way to work on September 14, 2022, in the City of Markham. Travis was born on July 16, 1984, and raised in Shiloh, in Cramahe Township of Ontario.Travis will be dearly missed by his wife Katrina Gillespie (Gates), and his best friend and life partner Melinda LaPorte. Loving son to Robert and Lori Gillespie (Spencer). Cherished brother of Daniel Gillespie and fiancé Tanya Bolduc, and brother Scott and wife Sharlyn Gillespie (Denstedt). Proud grandson to Patricia Spencer (Taylor). Beloved uncle to Julia, Evelyn, Savannah, Spencer, Lilah, and Sawyer, who adored spending time with him, always looked up to him as a role model, and will miss him so much.Travis was a respected member of York Regional Police, where he first began his career in December 2019 and was assigned as a Police Constable to 2 District, C Platoon. Prior to joining York Regional Police, Travis worked as a Metrolinx/Go Transit Sergeant for 11 years and volunteered his time to Community Living and the Primal Mixed Martial Arts Academy. Travis’ proudest accomplishments were becoming a Police Constable and passing the ERU Selection Week to progress towards becoming a member of York Regional Police’s Emergency Response Unit. He was well liked by his colleagues, peers and supervisors and demonstrated a true commitment to serving and protecting his community.Travis was passionate about martial arts, and enjoyed training, skateboarding and snowboarding. But most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his friends and family, and celebrating the special moments with those that he loved. He was known for his boundless energy, his strength, courage and determination, and above all his amazing smile, positive and caring nature. Travis was greatly loved by his family and so many others he encountered. He had a natural ability to gravitate to friends and even strangers who needed guidance and support through various life struggles. Often these friends quickly became part of the Gillespie extended family. Although his time with us was much too short, we are so proud of the person he was and how he touched so many people. The family wishes to thank everyone for their overwhelming support in their time of great loss.A memorial service was held at Chapel Ridge Funeral Home on Thursday, September 22, 2022. Flowers  to Chapel Ridge Funeral Home. In memory of Travis, the family has established the Travis Robert Gillespie Martial Arts Scholarship Fund, which will award a scholarship to a child each year in his memory.
