USA: North Carolina Deaths

Shirley Gillespie COUCH died aged 89, of Davidson, January 8, 2025 at Atrium Health Cabarrus. A cherished wife, devoted mother, and loving grammy, Shirley will be deeply missed by all who knew her.  She was born on October 17, 1935 in New Holland, Georgia to Sarah Wilson and Joseph Wesley Gillespie. Shirley was married to Thomas William Couch on August 26, 1956 in Ware Shoals, SC. Together, they shared 58 wonderful years and raised a family built on faith, love, and unwavering support. As a mother, she instilled in her children values of integrity, hard work, and kindness. Her love for her family knew no bounds, and she was always there to offer comfort, advice, and laughter. As a grandmother, she took immense joy in the lives of her grandchildren, often spoiling them with homemade treats, warm hugs, and the unforgettable stories she would tell.  Shirley was employed as a secretary at Davidson Elementary School in Davidson, NC, where she was loved by students and staff for 18 years. Prior to that, she worked in the audiovisual department at Indiana University.

Shirley had a heart of gold and a spirit that touched everyone she met. Her kindness was unmatched, and her generosity knew no limits. For over 25 years, her home was an extension of the Davidson College Athletic Training Department. Many Davidson athletes were welcomed into the family home to recover from injury or illness. A homemade meal at her house was a coveted invite for student athletes.

Mrs. Couch was preceded in death by her parents J.W. and Sarah Gillespie, husband Tom Couch, and daughter Kerri Jane Couch. She leaves behind her three beloved sons, Thomas Kevin and wife Joy of Wilmington, NC, Joseph Christopher of Davidson, NC, William Kendall and wife Leslie of Fort Mill, SC; and four grandchildren: William Cade Couch, Gabriella Kendall (Gabby) Couch, Jenna Annalise Couch, and Coltyn Joseph (CJ) Couch, along with many friends who were fortunate to know her. Funeral services were held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, January 12, 2025, in the Chapel of Raymer-Kepner Funeral Home, Huntersville. Interment followed at Mimosa Cemetery, Davidson.

David Ephlin Gillespie 84, decorated WWII veteran, member of the North Carolina Journalism Hall of Fame, community and church leader died suddenly March 26, 2006 at Rex Hospital.
Born in Gaston County on Sept. 16, 1921, son of The Rev. George R. Gillespie and Jessie Ephlin Gillespie, David’s newspaper career began in l939 as sports editor of The Gastonia Gazette for three years. He served 42 months in Belgium and Germany during World War II as an Infantry officer and was awarded the Purple Heart and Silver Star for valour at the Remagen Bridge. He was ordered to remain in Germany for a year after the conclusion of the war to edit a history of the Forty Seventh Infantry Regiment. He came back to the Gazette and worked his way up to managing editor. In 1951, he started his own newspaper, The Gaston Citizen, and was its editor and publisher with wife Margaret selling advertising for its five years. He became Sunday editor of the The High Point Enterprise before becoming editor of The Shelby Daily Star, a post he held for four years. Under his guidance, the paper won numerous awards from the N.C. Press Association, including several for his editorial writing. In 1961 he became associate editor and director of the editorial pages for The Charlotte Observer. During 11 of the most turbulent years in Charlotte’s history, his strong editorial leadership contributed to the successful desegregation of the Charlotte and surrounding area schools. He joined the newly formed Southern Growth Policies Board in Research Triangle Park in l972. As director of administration and later as director of intergovernmental affairs, David spent five years working with southern governors’ offices to help the interstate organization get started.

In 1977 he joined The News and Observer as editorial writer and columnist. He won four successive awards for editorial writing from 1983-86. He was also was one of three national finalists for the Pulitzer Prize in editorial writing in 1985. David was inducted into the North Carolina Journalism Hall of Fame in 1989. In his nomination he was described “one of the most decent, honorable, courageous, and, in many ways, most effective (journalists) North Carolina has ever produced.” Since formal retirement in 1987 and until his death, he has been a weekly editorial contributor and writing coach for The News and Observer. This month David was featured in a documentary on WTVI in Charlotte showing footage from his 1954 appearance on See It Now with Edward R. Murrow following the US Supreme Court Brown vs. Board of Education school desegregation decision. Murrow sent a film crew to Gastonia to examine the effects of the desegregation decision on a southern city, and David, as editor of the local newspaper, was the opening interview and arranged for the program’s other interviews with Gastonia citizens. He was a member of the American Society of Newspaper Editors, the National Conference of Editorial Writers, the N.C. Editorial Writers Conference and the N.C. Associated Press News Council.

He held various civic and church leadership positions throughout his life. He was a member of the Gastonia City Council and Vice Mayor. He was an elder at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Charlotte and served multiple terms as an elder at White Memorial Presbyterian Church since moving to Raleigh. He served on the Board of Advisors for the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Social Work for over a decade and joined its Ambassadors Group in 2002 to continue his support of the School.

Donald Edwin Gillespie, St., 92, died Saturday, April 15, 2017 at Moses Cone Hospital. There was a memorial service in First Presbyterian Church on April 29 at 3pm. The family received guests afterward in the Virginia Gilmer Room.

Don was born May 24, 1924 in Dallas, Texas and later lived in Austin with his parents Harlie Patterson Gillespie and Ethel Helen Cervin Gillespie. He is predeceased by a brother, Harlie Patterson “Pat” Gillespie, Jr. He is survived by a sister, Shirley Gillespie Dyess.

Don enrolled in the University of Texas in 1942, but soon enlisted as a Navy Air Cadet. Serving in the US Marine Corps for 13 years, he flew Corsairs in the Pacific Theater during World War II, and was a pilot and forward air controller with the 1st Marine Division in Korea. Decorations he received include the Air Medals, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and a Commendation Ribbon with Combat “V”. Don flew commercial cargo after leaving the service, and entered the accounting field while living in Macon, Georgia. He moved to Greensboro to become a partner in the firm Davenport, Marvin and Caudle. He earned his CPA in 1969 and was a founding member of the Accounting and Review Services Committer of AICPA. He remained self-employed into his 80’s.

Don was baptized into the Methodist Church in Texas, and he and Isabel were founding members of the Trinity Presbyterian Church of Havelock, NC. He taught Sunday School and was a choir member for many years at Vineville Avenue Presbyterian Church in Macon, Georgia. Karen Gillespie

Karen Kelly Gillespie, December 29, 1960 – October 23, 2015,  54, of Raleigh, NC passed away peacefully Friday evening, October 23, 2015 at Duke University Hospital Pavilion surrounded by her loved ones. She was born on December 29, 1960, in Greensburg, PA, the daughter of Paul Eugene Kelley Sr. and the late Martha Irene King Kelley. For the past 28 years she has been a dedicated employee at SAS, her current position was as the Operations Manager for the Energy and Manufacturing Business Unit in the Sales division. During her years at SAS she held several other positions, once of those working in the Financial Services Business Unit, and of course her first job in Contracts. Karen made many long term friends and lasting friendships everywhere she worked, she will be missed by many.

Karen was a proud graduate of Penn State University where she obtained her Bachelor’s Degree and she continued her education at Meredith College here in Raleigh, receiving a Masters Degree. She loved vacationing at the beach with her husband Dale where they could just relax and enjoy the sunsets while walking on the beach. They also enjoyed dining out and spending time listening to LP’s on their high end audio system. Karen was especially close with her “besties” in her social circle but loved all her family and friends with deep emotion. The love for her kitties and animals in general was tangible. One of her favourite things was riding in her convertible with the top down while listening to Enya at total peace with the moment. She was also a huge fan of classic Rock & Roll, and was a super fan of Pink Floyd. Karen, our “crazy diamond”, will remain in our hearts and be forever loved! We truly wish you were still here.

Her greatest passion in life besides family and friends was Penn State Football (go Nittany Lions!), she and her father would spend every Saturday afternoon during football season watching the game side by side. She knew the plays, the penalties, and she had never had a problem offering up coaching suggestions to the TV. They even made trips to away games to support their beloved Nittany Lions.

She is survived by her husband Dale Raymond Gillespie of Raleigh, her father Paul Eugene Kelley Sr. of Raleigh, her brother Paul Eugene Kelley Jr. and his life partner Wendy Cliner of Richmond, VA, her sister-in-law Julie Kelley, along with her niece Julianne Kelley, nephew Zachary Kelley and great nephew John Muro. She was preceded in death by her mother and a brother, Michael David Kelley.

A funeral mass was held on Saturday, October 31, 2015 at 11 AM in the Chapel at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 11401 Leesville Road, in Raleigh. Family  greeted friends and shared loving memories of Karen on Friday evening, October 30, 2015 from 7-9 PM at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh, NC.

Kenneth Gillespie, NC
Kenneth Gillespie, NC

Kenneth Charles Gillespie, “Ken”  of Winterville, North Carolina, passed away at home on Jan 9, 2025 age 87 years. Funeral Mass held Friday, January 17, 2025 at 11 am, Saint Peter Catholic Church, Greenville, NC. Ken was born on January 28, 1937 at home, in Saint Elmo, Illinois to William Paul and Margaret Louise Lay Gillespie. He lived in Saint Elmo until he graduated from Saint Elmo High School in 1954. Ken matriculated at the University of Illinois, where he earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Commercial Teaching. After graduation he taught business classes at Windsor High School, in Windsor, Illinois and ran a produce stand for the summers of 1960-61. After a few years of scraping along on a teacher’s salary, despite knowing little of how business worked, he made a move that would shape his life. Always quick to seize an opportunity, he launched a career at Blaw-Knox, a paving equipment manufacturer, during the heyday of the Eisenhower Interstate project. Bolstered by the power of the 1960s advertising age, Ken moved rapidly through the industry, collecting experience and know-how along the way. By the late 1970s, he realized that advertising was a young man’s game and settled into a Public Relations role at a construction trade association. Never a man to rest on his laurels, Ken continued his self-invention, taking over his father’s accounting business in 1985. Finding himself ill-prepared to take this business to the level that he envisioned, he returned to college, earning a second Bachelor’s degree, cum laude, in Accountancy from Northwood University. This training facilitated a lifelong dream of becoming a Certified Public Accountant. In partnership with his beloved wife, Geraldine, they operated an accounting and tax practice until 2006.

Ken married Joan Carls in 1959. Together they had three sons: Todd (1961); Bradley (1965) and Matthew (1967) and five grandchildren. Ken married Geraldine O’Shea in 1978. Together they had a daughter, Julianna Louise (1981) and two grandchildren. Ken relished time spent with his grandchildren and took great pride in the farm he operated at the end of his driveway. Up until his final days, he kept Matt and Brad on their toes, fiercely competing in an online strategy game. Ken was a member of Saint Peter Catholic Church in Winterville, and an active member the Knights of Columbus, serving many years as Treasurer. Ken spent his final years compiling a wonderful collection of colorful life stories and anecdotes that will keep his memories alive long after his passing.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his father, Paul (2/2/1917 – 8/1/1985), his mother, Louise (8/25-1918 – 5/23/2003) and his eldest son, Todd (10/7/1961 – 3/21/2010).

Kenneth is survived by: His adored wife, Geraldine; three children: Bradley, Matthew (Julie) and Julianna (Jay); seven grandchildren: Ian, Rachel, Paul, Anna, Megan, Jake and Jordan; two cousins: Edward (Martha), Connie (Kent), Gina (Jack)and Nicky (Jeremy). Arrangements by Wilkerson Funeral Home & Crematory, Greenville, NC

Kevin Gary Gillespie, Brevard, North Carolina. April 28, 1970 – December 19, 2022, died suddenly. He was preceded in death by his father, Gary Gillespie, his step father, Dennis Taylor, grandparents Gordon and Mable Burgess, who he loved very much; and his parents in law Norman and Patty Saltz.  He is survived by his wife Tammy Saltz Gillespie; his mother Carol Taylor; daughters Riley Harding (Andrew) and Whitney Gillespie (Kyle); a brother Josh Gillespie; a step sister Monica Taylor Howard; three grandchildren Nyla Hoskyns, Micah Hoskyns and Grant Harding; and his loving aunt and uncle Nancy and Charles Briggs. He was employed for many years with Petit’s Body Shop of Brevard and thought of Roger Petit as a father who taught him much about auto body work. He had many friends.

Margaret Cloninger Gillespie, 91, of Raleigh, a woman of enduring dignity, beauty and bravery, died at her home April 7, 2016 after several years of declining health. Margaret was born July 11, 1924 in Stanley, NC to Robert Milton and Harriet Long Cloninger. She was one of seven children raised on a working farm. Forever proud of her heritage, she never let anyone forget that her family came to North Carolina in 1765. Margaret was playing basketball for Stanley High School as a senior captain when she caught the eye of David Gillespie, who was moonlighting as a high school official while writing sports for the Gastonia Gazette. They were married in 1942 and settled in Gastonia, where she modeled and worked in retail until their first child, Lane, was born. Following World War II and David’s return from duty in France and Germany, they resumed their lives in Gastonia, and David later established the Gaston Citizen newspaper with Margaret by his side selling advertising. Subsequent years saw the birth of three more children and David’s career moves, which took them to High Point, Shelby, Charlotte and Raleigh. Margaret gracefully raised four children, took on a myriad of volunteer jobs and worked outside the home when time permitted. Never idle, after her youngest child entered college, she began a career in Real Estate, joining Realtor Sim Wells in Raleigh, earning her Broker’s license and becoming a partner in Wells and Gillespie. She later joined York Properties, where she worked until well into her seventies.

Margaret was a proud member of White Memorial Presbyterian Church, where she was an active in the women of the church and the wedding guild. She lived her faith by being kind and treating all people with respect. She was an unwavering Democrat and UNC fan, made a mean chocolate icing and had been known to brew her own red wine until a minor explosion ended her aspirations of being a vintner. She kept a basketball goal in the backyard expressly so she could shoot baskets with her grandchildren. When health issues began to diminish her mind and body, she accepted the transitions she faced without complaint. She was blessed in her last years to remain at home with her loving caregiver Beatrice, who, with her team, soothed and sustained her until the end. Community Hospice provided loyal care to Margaret.

In addition to her parents and David, her devoted husband of 64 years, Margaret was predeceased by her brothers, Ladd, Melvin, Charles, and Howard Cloninger, her sister, Jane Garrison and her sons-in-law, Philip W. Cooke and William H. Gammon. She is survived by her brother Calvin of Stanley; her children, Lane Cooke of Pittsboro, Jessica Gammon, Mary Margaret Gillespie and friend Eric Smith, and David Gillespie and wife Dana, all of Raleigh; her grandchildren, Margaret Gammon Blythe and husband Bryan of Charlotte, Paige Gillespie Eason and husband Brian, Anna Walker Gillespie and Grayson Gillespie, all of Raleigh; her great grandchildren, Margaret, Hunter and George Blythe of Charlotte; and numerous nieces and nephews. The Witness to the Resurrection Service was held at White Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1704 Oberlin Road, Raleigh on Monday, April 11 at 2 pm. The family  greeted friends after the service in the Jane Bell Gathering Space.

Patrick Gillespie
Patrick Gillespie

Patrick Gillespie, Raleigh, North Carolina – Patrick Hurd Gillespie was born to Pat and Bernice Gillespie on April 4, 1937, in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Theirs was a multigenerational home never short on love and commotion but of simple means. The oldest of six boys, Pat took seriously the lifelong responsibilities of being the eldest by setting a good example for his brothers and, along with them, ensuring his parents enjoyed a comfortable retirement in Fort Smith. Pat is survived by brothers, Mike, Steve, Lee, and Jamie and their wives, Micki, Juliet, Mary, and Joanne. He was deeply saddened by the earlier losses of brother, Eddie and his wife, Ellen. Pat’s working life began early with a paper route he proudly threw at a young age. After high school, he worked as a bookkeeper while attending junior college, marrying Carol, and serving in the Air National Guard of Arkansas. Following a year of active duty in the Air Force, in 1962 Pat moved his family to Fayetteville, AR, where he completed his degree in accounting at the University of Arkansas.

In 1964 he embarked on his 24-year career with Arthur Andersen & Co. Nine years after starting as a staff auditor in Tulsa, OK, Pat was admitted to partnership. He assumed management of the audit practice in Oklahoma City, mainly focused on helping oil and gas clients as they dealt with the highs and lows of their industry.
When he married Nancy in 1981, they planned an early retirement, which was realized in 1988. They travelled the country to find the place best suited for that retirement. They chose Raleigh and never regretted their choice. Wetherburn Subdivision and North Ridge Country Club were contributing factors to that decision. For the past 34 years, they have thrived with many friendships formed in both places.

Early retirement allowed Pat to spend more time with his family, playing golf, going fishing, and traveling. He often combined these activities, creating unforgettable experiences. Together, he and his family travelled to many places including Alaska, Europe, Newfoundland, Ecuador, and Australia. While golf was one of his passions, it was fishing that brought Pat and his children closer. These fishing trips brought joy, adventure, and at times some good old fashioned competition. Pat is survived by his children, Gregory (Paula) of Bethlehem, PA, James (Cheryl) of Fort Smith, AR, Julia (Blake) of Huntington Woods, MI, and their mother, Carol Ebrahimi; and by his wife, Nancy Gillespie and their daughter, Laura O’Connell (John) of Fort Myers, FL, grandchildren, Jonathan, Morgan, Bailey, Brennan, Ivy, Finn, Lucy, and Jovie added great joy to his retirement years. After a wonderful Christmas holiday with family in Florida, Pat spent his final week at Duke Raleigh Hospital before passing on January 6, 2024, from complications of Parkinson’s. The care provided to Pat and his family by every staff member there (including security, housekeeping, aides, nurses, doctors, and hospice staff) was exemplary. Our thanks to Anna, Tiffany, Jean, and Dr. Ward especially. The family has honored Pat’s wish to have no funeral or memorial service.

Rebecca Turner Gillespie, of Burnsville, NC passed away on January 1, 2025 in Chesapeake VA.  A proud North Carolinian and lifelong Methodist, Becky was born to Leighton Houston and Mildred Davis Turner on March 17th, 1938. Raised in Pink Hill NC, Becky was the Valedictorian of the Pink Hill High School class of 1956. She met Charles Gillespie, her ‘Charlie Brown,’ while still n high school and they were married on June 9 th, 1957, just after she completed her freshman year at Meredith College in Raleigh, NC. They then lived in Raleigh where Charlie worked as a pharmacist until the day after her graduation in May of 1960, when they moved to Charlie’s hometown of Burnsville, NC. There, they purchased Pollard’s Drug store and their adventure truly began. While Charlie ran the drug store, Becky taught school for two years. On October 15th, 1962 they received what Becky always referred to as “the surprise of her life,” identical twin boys! One of the greatest joys of Becky’s life was being a mother to Joe and Davis. She instilled a love of learning through reading of childhood classics and travel throughout the United States. When the boys were ten years old, Becky purchased “Ye Olde Fabric Shoppe” just feet away from Pollard’s Drug Store. She owned and operated the store for 15 years during which time the bestselling items were skirts with appliques designed and drawn by her husband, and quilts.

Throughout her life, Becky served her church and community with generosity and love. Becky and Charlie developed meaningful friendships with several other couples in Burnsville, with whom they made many annual trips together. She was an active volunteer and board member for The Parkway Playhouse. She was a long-time member of the Mt. Mitchell Crafts Fair Committee, and served as director of the annual event for several years in the 80’s and 90’s. Becky also served as a member of the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina. During their retirement years, Becky and Charlie made several trips to Louisiana to serve with the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). These trips of service, and the friendships they formed there, were especially meaningful to both Becky and Charlie. Becky was also a member of the Mountain Piecemakers Quilt Guild, Ugly Quilts Club, PEO, and The Burnsville Women’s Club. A long-time member of Higgins United Methodist Church, Becky was a member of several UMW Circles, Sunday school classes, and a reliable volunteer.
A two-time cancer survivor, Becky met many challenges over the past few years with dignity and grace. She cherished her family and we will treasure our memories of “Miss Becky,” from watching her sew Halloween costumes, to making our favorite desserts, playing family games of “Spoon” and coordinating annual trips to Topsail Beach. We will also treasure the lessons she taught us, from never to make pimento cheese without Duke’s mayonnaise, to how to bathe a newborn, to the value of unconditional love. But most of all, we will remember her sense of humor, resilience, and how much she loved each of us. Becky was married for 67 years to Charles Byrd Gillespie, who survives. A devoted mother, Becky is also survived by her sons Charles Joseph Gillespie and Leighton Davis Gillespie (Ruth), and six beloved grandchildren: Carter (Gary), Branin, Jake, Meg (Ashley), Alex (Fiona) and Turner. Becky’s younger brother L.H. Turner (Carolyn), and sister Debbie Dekle (Brent) also survive, as do two great grandsons and several nieces and cousins.
