Also Thomas.  NW 1/4 557 E., Internment number 13047.  ID 013580  Obit: “The late Mrs Gillespie, Almira Grimshaw, widow of the late John Gillespie (1821-1907) , passed away at the residence of her son, Lieut-Col George H Gillespie at 495 Princess Street on Monday, April 28, at 2:00 pm. She had been an invalid during the last two years and was confined to her bed since October last. She was a very patient sufferer, and was in the full possession of her faculties to the last. The last Mrs Gillespie was a daughter of the late William Grimshaw (1806-1897) and Mary Blair Grimshaw (1809-1883), was born on Wolfe Island on April 22, 1837.  On March 13, 1856 she was married to John Gillespie at St Andrew’s Church, Kingston. The couple took up residence on Wolfe Island, but later moved to River View Farm, Pittsburgh, where they remained until 1901, when they came to the city to live. Her husband died in the year 1907, one year after the celebration of their golden wedding anniversary, which took place on March 13, 1906. He was in his eighty-fifth year.

In religion, Mrs Gillespie was a staunch Anglican and a devout member of St Paul’s Church. Of eleven children born, nine survive. John, who resides on the homestead at Pittsburgh; Robert of Vernon, BC; Dr Henry Gillespie of Duluth, Minnesota; Lieut-Colonel George H Gillespie of this city, who is inspector of cadets, M. D. No 3, and with whom the deceased lived:  Mrs F J Brooks, Pittsburgh; Mrs H.F Wilmot, Vernon, BC; Mrs W. A. Sawyer, Kingston; Mrs E. D. Baker, Jamestown, North Dakota; and Mrs H. A Courtney, Duluth, Minnesota.’

Clifford Gordon Gillespie    September 29, 1941 – May 4, 2021 Peacefully and quietly on the morning of May 4, 2021, Clifford Gillespie, with his beloved wife by his side, passed away in death. Cliff leaves behind his dear wife of 58 years, Frances Gillespie, his children, Craig (Tania) Gillespie, Shannon (Mark) Wheeler, Morgan Gillespie (Corey), Melissa (Joe) Romeo, his three grandchildren, Rhyley, Chazz and Aidan, siblings, Paul (Claire) Gillespie, Susan Earle, Sally (Paul) Kane, as well as many sisters-in law, brothers-in law, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his eldest child Elizabeth Robin Gillespie and his sister Shirley Clark. Cliff coped so gracefully through his seven years of dealing with Lewy Body Dementia and Parkinson’s Disease. Never letting the disease define him, he truly was one of the most kind and gentle souls there ever was. Cliff had a strong faith in the promises found in the Bible of the resurrection of the dead and the peaceful new world. When asked what message he would like to pass on to people, he would often say “tell them to keep on, keeping on!” In his honor, a virtual memorial was held on zoom on Saturday, May 15, 2021 at 2:00pm.

Eliza Gillespie  Died Wolfe Island March 26, 1904, age 90  years.   2nd record Eliza Martin Gillespie b June 22, 1814 IRELAND d 1904. Christ Church Anglican Cemetery, Wolfe Island  ID 010571, Obit:  At the residence of George Raneans (Ranous), Wolfe Island, there passed one of the Island’s respected citizens in the person of Eliza Martin, widow of the late Robert Gillespie, (he died 1887), she aged 90 years and nine months. Three sons and two daughter are left to mourn her loss: Robert, Howe Island, William and George, Wolfe Island. Mrs Raneans (Ranous) and Mrs Mackie (Michea), Wolfe Island. The funeral took place on Monday, 28th inst, Rev Mr Foster officiating. The remains were placed in a vault at the foot of the island.  (correction to names I made, and saw an agreement on FAG.. But not all of their children are identified on FAG).

My note: The matriarch of the family, wife of Robert Gillespie, Sr. It was the tombstone of her daughter Anne Gillow, who revealed the family came from Co Armagh, Ireland. I also did a serious research of this family line, but most notes are now from FAG. Several researchers tracing this family line corresponded with me.  I met a man on the ferry when I was returning to the mainland,  from filming the tombstones on Wolfe Island , who knew Robert Gillespie Jr from Howe island. This ferry worker directed me to Northumberland Co, and the daughter who moved there. I later walked that farm, and also stopped in Willowbank Cemetery for other family members. A long time ago.

I think the Robert Gillespie Sr family arrived with his family about 1840 from Ireland, just working from memory. Most of the earliest Gillespie Irish families who settled along the St Lawrence River during the 1820 to 1840 period either came from either Co Armagh or Co Tyrone. A big wind in Ireland caused a lot of damage in Northern Ireland in 1830 that might have been one cause.

It is with extreme sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our loving daughter, sister and friend Elizabeth “Robin” Gillespie on April 17, 2020. Robin adored her family. She loved unconditionally with all her heart. She gave generously with all she had. Her celebration of life will held in the coming months. Heather Gillespie, (nee Moyst) – known to many as “Mom”, sadly passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 29 , 2023 at the Providence Care Hospital in her 72nd year. She leaves behind her loving husband Wray of 49 years, two daughters Melanie (Jason) and Jennifer. She loving Nana to her grandchildren Jacob, Sienna and Rachel. She will be missed by her brother Skip and his wife Anita as well as countless nieces and nephews, as well as many “honorary sons and daughters” that had the privilege of knowing Mom’s loving touch, words of guidance and support.  She left a lasting impact on all she came in contact with throughout her life and career. Linda Gillespie of Port Ewen, NY, passed peacefully Friday morning, January 11, 2019, age 71 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, with her family by her side. She was born in Kingston on January 14, 1947 and was the daughter of the late Robert Racicot and Eva Lukasz Helfmann. She was the wife of the late John “Hap” E Gillespie.

She was a graduate of Kingston High School, she had worked for Hercules, sales for Stanley and Copper Craft Guild, worked for J & A Roofing as office manager and then restaurant manager for Friendly’s Ice Cream, she had owned and operated the Trolley Diner and Crusin’ Creams. She also did sales for Mary Kay, San Francisco Music Box Company. She drove a bus for Mulligan Bus Company and then worked for the City of Kingston as a bus driver, retiring in 2018.  Linda was a parishioner of Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary RC Church and the Benedictine Chapel. She was the team “Gram” of KHS cheerleading for many years. She enjoyed ceramics, riding a motorcycle, fast cars and visiting the casinos.

She is survived by her son Christopher Gillespie of Port Ewen, her grandchildren Megan Gillespie, Isabelle and David Stitt, her sisters Cathy Racicot Helmbold and her husband Lewis Helmbold, Jr., Sheryl Racicot Schindler and her husband Bob Schindler, Judi Racicot Miller and her husband Bill Ed Miller, Carol Ann Racicot and Grace Racicot Rodriguez. Many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews and her beloved Yorkie Robbie Roscoe. Arrangements entrusted to Keyser Funeral & Cremation Service, 216 Broadway, Port Ewen. The family  received their friends on Tuesday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The procession formed on Wednesday at 9:15 at the funeral home. At 10 AM a Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary RC Church. Burial will take place at Wiltwyck Rural Cemetery.

Mary Kathleen Gillespie, Nee Martin, Peacefully on January 28th 2023, surrounded by her family. Predeceased by her husband Dermot, and her sons Michael Patrick and Michael Sean. Robert Gillespie, birth unknown. Death June 9, 1887 in his 84th year. Buried Christ Church Anglican Cemetery, Wolfe Island, Frontenac Co, Ontario. Obit: Robert Gillespie, who for a quarter of a century had been in charge of the Lighthouse at Port Metcalf, foot of Wolfe Island, died on Thursday, aged 83. He was a brother of John Gillespie, Pittsburgh, and leaves a widow and seven children. He emigrated to Canada in 1840 and previous to his appointment as lighthouse keeper, was a farmer. For some time he suffered from Rheumatism, and so severely he could not walk. He was highly respected from all who knew him.

William Gillespie “Bill” At his home, following a prolonged illness, on Sunday, April 16, 2017. Bill Gillespie, age 73 years, beloved husband of Margaret (nee Rose), for 30 years. Father of Jo-Anne and Robert, and grandfather of Chelsea. Survived by his sister Joan Walker and husband Clayton (deceased). Fondly remembered by nephew James and nieces Cathy and Judy. Predeceased by great-nephew Will. Also sadly missed by Bill and Margaret`s extended family. Also remembering Mitsy his beloved Daschund. Bill, a life-long resident of Kingston, was an avid bowler and when in good health he very much enjoyed camping, travelling and gardening. Cremation arrangements in the care of James Reid Crematorium. A graveside service  held at Glenhaven Memorial Gardens on Thursday, April 20 at 2:00 pm., followed by a reception in the James Reid Reception Centre, KIngston.

Ann Gillespie GILLOW, born 1826. Died Dec 11, 1868 (aged 41-42). Wolfe Island United Church Cemetery, Wolfe Island (states on FAG died in Ireland but that is in error. Born in Co Armagh, Ireland, as I personally filmed her tombstone. Spouse Samuel Gillow (1825-1902).  Their children: Robert Gillow (1858-1935), James Gillow (1859-1909). My note: Ann was the daughter of Robert and Eliza Gillespie, Sr and was part of the family who arrived from Ireland in 1840. Why did this couple stop having children for nine years?   Only other Gillows on Wolfe Island include Margaret GILLOW (1901-1999 (aged 97-98) & William ‘Joker’ GILLOW (March 7, 1900-1986 (aged 85-96) also buried in Wolf Island United Church Cemetery.  These may be Samuel’s parents.
