Betty EACOTT (nee Gillespie), It is with a deep sense of loss that we announce the unexpected passing of Betty Eacott (Gillespie) in her 74th year, posted August 22, 2022. Pre-deceased by her beloved late husband John (1998)..Betty had many family members and friends that loved her dearly. Betty touched so many people with her kind spirit. In her later years Betty found peace and comfort living with her son Darrell and his wife Tammy.
Betty was a lover of nature and spent many hours outdoors watching and learning about all the new types of birds that would visit her feeders. She kept a sharp mind by finding a sense of calm and accomplishment in several paintings that she completed. She was proud to show these creations to family and friends. She was also kept company by the family’s pet cats Peep and Purdy, who will deeply miss her loving and nurturing ways.
Betty has requested a cremation followed by a small gathering with family and friends that will took place on September 11th from 12-3 pm at our home in Hillsdale. We would also like to thank the family and friends that helped during these difficult times, the Springwater Fire Department, Simcoe County Paramedic Services, and the officer who assisted by going above and beyond the call of duty.

James Barnes Gillespie January 14, 1931 – March 17, 2015. Peacefully on St. Patricks Day with his wife Lorna holding his hand, her beloved and cherished husband, Partner in Life and best friend. Jim had faced recent major health issues with courage and fortitude, never losing his sense of humour, optimism or patience. Jim was born in Ville La Salle, Montreal to Thomas Gillespie and Hilda Gillespie (nee Barnes) who immigrated to Canada from Belfast, N. Ireland in 1928. He has enjoyed a successful business career in marketing and sales and thrived on the challenges it presented, initially in Quebec and later in Ontario. A mutual friend brought Jim and Lorna together and they married in 1976 at St. Bruno, Quebec prior to his transfer to Ontario where they have resided in Oakville happily since. Jim will be remembered as a kind, gentle and thoughtful man with a warm smile, welcoming many friends to their home over the years with good conversation and generous tables. He had a wonderful sense of humour and a seemingly inexhaustible supply of anecdotes which leave us with fond memories. Although he and Lorna enjoyed extensive travel for business and pleasure he was a home-body at heart and loved the quiet times with Lorna enjoying a good book, crosswords, Sudoku and fine wines while listening to his favourite jazz. For his own entertainment he played guitar and mastered the clarinet as a young man. Their gardens also brought him pride and pleasure. Belonging to Kahnawake Golf Club in Montreal brought a lifelong interest in the game. Jim will be missed by many friends who have retired and moved away to Mexico, B.C, and the U.S and also by Lorna’s extended family in the UK who so warmly welcomed him. We are blessed to have so many happy memories of a Life Well Lived. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Jim took place at 11:00 am on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at St. Jude’s Anglican Church, 160 William Street, Oakville.

Mrs Robert J Gillespie d Aug 5, 1965. Published in Georgetown Herald Newspaper.

Robert T. E. Gillespie, June 9, 1931 – June 8, 2024 Bob was born on June 9, 1931 in Edinburgh Scotland to Robert and Margaret Gillespie. He passed away peacefully at home in Mississauga, one day shy of his 93rd birthday, surrounded by loved ones. The foundations of his life were love of family, hard work, and giving back. Bob left Edinburgh when he was 21 and came to Canada in search of opportunity. He was quickly hired by Canadian General Electric (now GE Canada) as a Quality Control Engineer which was the beginning of his impressive career at GE. A year later he met Irene Olson and they have enjoyed a strong and loving partnership for 67 years. Bob became a Canadian citizen in 1960 and was extremely proud to call Canada his adopted home. Bob had a remarkable 52 year career at GE. He had both technical expertise and exceptional business acumen, and rose steadily through the ranks. He was appointed the role of Chairman and CEO in 1993 and served in that capacity for eleven years until he retired from GE at the age of 72. Bob was the ultimate team player who experienced and oversaw great change within the company. Trustworthy, authentic, kind, and wise were the words used to describe him by his peers. His motto was simple; treat others as you’d like to be treated yourself. His professional competence and wise counsel meant he was in high demand as a board member, both in a corporate and public sector capacity. He served as the Governor and Chair of Credit Valley Hospital, Director of Husky IMS, President and Chairman of the Board of the Toronto Symphony and Honorary Governor of the Royal Ontario Museum, to name a few of his significant roles. For many years after his retirement from GE Bob had a close association with the Imperial Capital Investment Group, where he served as a highly valued mentor and board member. Over the years he received many awards for his service, including Canada’s International Executive of the Year, the Gold Medal Award from the Canadian Council of Professional Engineers, and a Doctor of Letters from Heriot-Watt University.
He was an also a dedicated philanthropist and cared deeply for his community of Mississauga where he acted as a community advocate: the cause most dear to his heart is the Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre at University of Toronto’s Mississauga campus. In spite of the pace Bob kept, he was first and foremost a devoted husband, father and ‘Poppy’. Family always came first. He was also a mentor, friend and father figure to many. A generous and fun-loving host, Bob had a terrific sense of humour, and kept everyone entertained with stories and speeches in his characteristic Scottish ‘burr’. Bob and Irene created many traditions together. The family cottage on Lake Muskoka is a beloved gathering place for family and friends and was known as Bob’s ‘happy place’. The cottage was a place to make lasting memories with 5pm drinks on the dock and lively dinners with lots of wine and conversation in the Muskoka Room. It was also the chosen location for the annual ORC ‘Tennis Group’ weekends, which were legendary. The love of skiing is a family passion passed down through the generations. Bob loved to gather in Thornbury and Collingwood to ski at Craigleith, and cherished the many family trips over the years to Beaver Creek in Colorado. Bob was also an avid golfer and was known for his ability to negotiate a generous number of strokes from Rob and Jay before teeing off at Kirrie Glen. Poppy never missed the opportunity to stop at the country store on the way home from golf so he could return with a pocket full of candy for the eagerly awaiting grandkids. Many fond memories were made in Florida, where Bob and Irene spent an increasing amount of time over the years. The Colony provided a welcome escape from the colder months in Canada and fun times were had making new friends and hosting family for a little relaxation.
Bob was diagnosed with Parkinsons late in life. As the disease progressed he never lost that famous sense of humour. Irene cared lovingly for Bob, and the family would like to thank Dr. Clive, Dr. Pencharz, Dr. Rizek, Kerri, and Janet and Bob for their help and support. He is survived by his wife, Irene; his children, Margaret, Susan (Jay) and Robert (Charlotte) and six grandchildren, Sam, Sophie (Mark), Teigan, Matt, Avery and Paige; sister, Margaret; brother, Eddie; godson, Cameron and many beloved family members. Celebration of Life for Bob was at Weston Golf and Country Club in the Fairway Room Tuesday, June 25, 2024 from 1-4 p.m. 50 St. Phillips Rd., Etobicoke, ON M9P
