The Town of Collingwood is in Simcoe County and sits right on the shorelines of Georgian Bay. But just west of it is the old Township of Collingwood, which is in Grey County and is now called The Town of Blue Mountains. Very confusing at first to any researcher, including myself in the beginning.

EACOTT, Berry (nee Gillespie), It is with a deep sense of loss that we announce the unexpected passing of Betty Eacott (Gillespie) in her 74th year. (posted Aug 3, 2022 )Pre-deceased by her beloved late husband John (1998). Betty had many family members and friends that loved her dearly. Betty touched so many people with her kind spirit. In her later years Betty found peace and comfort living with her son Darrell and his wife Tammy.
Betty was a lover of nature and spent many hours outdoors watching and learning about all the new types of birds that would visit her feeders. She kept a sharp mind by finding a sense of calm and accomplishment in several paintings that she completed. She was proud to show these creations to family and friends. She was also kept company by the family’s pet cats Peep and Purdy, who will deeply miss her loving and nurturing ways.
Betty has requested a cremation followed by a small gathering with family and friends that will take place on September 11th from 12-3 pm at our home in Hillsdale.

Alexander Gillespie 1842-1916 (born SCOTLAND),
The death of of Mr Alexander Gillespie, which occurred on Wednesday, July 5th, 1916 came as a great shock to his many friends in Nottawa and surrounding country. The deceased was born in Islay, Scotland. In 1841 he came to Canada with his parents the late Donald and Mary Gillespie, when he was seven years old. With them he settled on Lot 30, on the 11th Concession of Nottawasaga, part of which he owned at the time of his death. Some years later, he purchased land on the Manitoulin Island where he resided for four years; after which he returned to Nottawasaga and purchased the home near Nottawa, where he remained until his death. Mr Gillespie married Miss Euphemia McNei, daughter of the late Malcolm McNeil of Fullarton Twp. The couple had one son, Harman and one daughter Miss Mary, who survive him. In politics the deceased was a Liberal and in religion a Baptist. The funeral which took lace on Friday from the family residence, to the Presbyterian Cemetery in Collingwood was well attended.”

Bonnie Gwendolyn Gillespie age 78, formally of Coldwater Ontario passed away at her home Wednesday January 20, 2021. Bonnie is survived by her loving husband, Ardell, and daughter Melanie, and her family (Owen) and, granddaughters Shanelle, Kirsten, (Mikayla) and (Bailey). Bonnie was born to Kenneth Crook and Doris Augusta Parnham at Orillia Soldiers Memorial Hospital 1942. Bonnie’s sibling, “older and only” sister Catherine MacDonald is predeceased. Ardell and Bonnie started their farm Bondell Highland Acres in 1963. Cattle were always a constant on the farm. For a short period of time, they farmed pigs and sheep. Approximately ten years later Bonnie came home with her first Nubian goat, transported in the back seat of a yellow Volkswagen Beetle. This was the beginning of a new adventure. With hard work and many learning curves their goat herd grew to eighty does. Bonnie and Ardell shared their passion and knowledge for goat farming with many new comers to the industry. Bonnie was the President of the Ontario Dairy Goat Association, and she was a judge at the local goat shows.
Bonnie loved tending to her perennial flower and vegetable gardens. Canning, preserving and preparing home cooked meals. Many family and friends will remember the smell of freshly baked bread upon entering the kitchen. It was a treat to be offered a buttered slice with a cup of tea or coffee, and, if lucky, be sent home with a loaf. Bonnie was very close to her daughter Melanie, and loved being “Nana”. She was a very large part of Shanelle and Kirsten’s developing years, and will be missed dearly. The cremation has already taken place and internment with close family and friends. Arrangements entrusted to the Doolittle Chapel of Carson Funeral Homes, 54 Coldwater St. E., Orillia,

David Gillespie 1931-1976. Victoria Harbour Union Cemetery, Tay Twp, Simcoe Co, Ontario

David Gillespie (Dave) Passed away days after his 56th birthday on April 5th, 2025 following a brief but courageous battle. Born April 1, 1969, in Barrie Ontario to the late Dorothy (LaVerdiere) and Leonard Gillespie. David grew up in Oro Station and spent most of his time on the ice or fishing. The family pond was a place for Dave to fulfill both the passions. Dave spent many summers in Algonquin Park which was like a second home to him. Many great laughs were shared over campfires in Rock Lake with family and friends who became family over the close to 40 years spent there.
Dave is survived by his two sons Jeff (Kalynn) and Nick (Matt), the mother of his sons and first love Joanne (Heard) Gillespie and two grandchildren Riley and Lylah. Dave is also survived by his remaining sibling Joanne Wallace, her husband Bill, nieces Kim Wallace (Gordon Lavery) and Crystal Wallace and nephew Cooper Lavery. Dave also leaves behind many other nieces, nephews and cousins who also held a special place in his heart.
In the last few years Dave found happiness in his relationship with Sue Carley. In the end, Dave’s only regret was that he didn’t get more time to spend with Sue, his boys, family and everyone else he loved.
A special thanks to the Midland Flyers organization and coaching staff for their love, support and caring for our family and Dave during this difficult time.
Also, a big thanks to the nursing staff and doctors at Orillia Soldiers Memorial Hospital for their exceptional care and compassion. Just like everything else Dave did in life, he fought his illness with strength, courage and remained calm and positive through the entire ordeal.
At Dave’s request, cremation has taken place and a celebration of Dave’s life and all his accomplishments will be held at a late
David William Gillespie, 1955 – 2009 in his 55th year, long term resident of Mississauga, passed away on the streets of Toronto, October 2, 2009. Funeral service took place at St. Margaret of Scotland Anglican Church, 161 Hanmer Street West, Barrie, ON at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 10, 2009. Interment Barrie Union Cemetery.
Dave or some would call him Gill was the middle child amongst the seven children of Margaret Mailer and Gordon Gillespie. He had four brothers, George of Mississauga, Bob (Mary) of Phoenix, John (Debbie) of Collingwood, and Douglas (Rachel of Barrie) as well as two sisters, Barbara Guitard of Barrie and Mary (Julius) Kairys of Toronto.
Thirteen nieces and nephews, Patricia of Kingston, Benjamin of Port Hope, Rachel of Phoenix, Kory and Vanessa of Collingwood, Diana, Sherry, Tina, Anne and Jim of Mississauga, Paul of Toronto, Jamie and Adam of Barrie will miss his stories.
Dave was ill most of his life with the last year his worst. In his last year his illness created many rifts amongst his friends and family as they did what they could to assist him.
David was very fortunate to have the love and support of Ben Duong and his wife and their children for many years. There are no words to express just how much of a difference your sacrifices made in David’s life. He always thought of you as family.
The family has been humbled by the compassion provided to Dave by many people these past few months; especially, M.L. and the elderly gentleman on Bay Street who daily assisted Dave with food and money. We will remember Dave as an intelligent and imaginative person. The voices he used and the stories he told brings smiles to our faces. The Dave we knew will be greatly missed.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Debbie Laycock (nee Gillespie) on Friday October 11, 2019, surrounded by her loved ones including her sister Joanne Wallace (Bill) and brother David Gillespie (Joanne). She was 64. Married to Murray Laycock for the past 39 years, they spent much of their time with their grandchildren and going for drives experiencing new areas. Born in Oro, Debbie spent much of her adult life in Oro, Angus and Orillia. She had a passion for following her beliefs. Youngest daughter of the late Dorothy (LaVerdiere) and Leonard Gillespie.
Our father Keith was a fun-loving and spirited man, who adored his grandchildren and dogs and was never far from one of his children. He enjoyed hitting the open road on his bike with his tunes and never missed a chance to watch his grandkids at the rink. He will be remembered and missed for his great big smile, contagious laugh, wicked sense of humor and the feeling whenever he left from a visit that it would never be long until we would see him again.
Friends and family gathered at an informal gathering to remember and celebrate our father Keith at 16 Campbell Ave. Oro Medonte, from 2-4 on Saturday August 4th.
