Bill Gillespie, died of natural causes Dec. 10, 2020 at the age of 79. The beloved Laguna Beach philanthropist had spent his life handing out millions of dollars to all manner of Orange County arts programs, as well as veterans, animals and just about anyone else who asked for help. “Bill was one of the kindest, most thoughtful, and unpretentious individuals I have encountered,” wrote Pacific Symphony President John Forsyte in a blog tribute. “Throughout most of the life of the Symphony, Bill was always there—supporting us, cheering us on, celebrating with us, and enjoying the great music he loved so dearly. His spirit will fill the heart of the Pacific Symphony forever.”  Gillespie inherited his wealth from a family fortune. Nevertheless, at 60 he took a job as a funeral service director at Pacific View Memorial Park in Newport Beach. And at age 69 he got his embalming license. He was also funny, she says, doing impersonations to make co-workers laugh. Marlon Brando in The Godfather was one of his favorites. “And he loved to put on disguises, funny hats, glasses, crooked teeth,” says Louis.

When Gillespie attended the performances of the musicians and ballerinas that he supported, though, it was typically in flashy high fashion, embroidered jackets and polished shoes. He never sought the spotlight for his philanthropy though, friends say. He didn’t like the fanfare surrounding his gifts. And there were many: Millions of dollars for the American Ballet Theater, Pacific Chorale, Pacific Symphony, Segerstrom Center for the Arts, South Coast Repertory, Philharmonic Society of Orange County, the Laguna Dance Festival and UCI (where three buildings bear his name). The glorious $2.5 million pipe organ at the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall — he paid for that too. In 1994, Gillespie founded the William Gillespie Foundation, which has supported more than 100 non-art organizations, ranging from AIDS services and the environment to animals, the elderly and veterans. Gillespie spent 13 months fighting in Vietnam with the U.S. Marine Corps. in the late ‘60s. Gillespie had no children, but he spoiled his mischievous Savannah cats (a domestic/wild hybrid) like they were his kids. “They had the run of the house,” Louis says. “He even took them on vacation to Palm Springs where he had a home.” Gillespie was laid to rest at Pacific View after a private service.

Camille Antoinette Amestoy Gillespie March 5, 1935 – August 27, 2023 Camille , known as Toni to family and friends, went home to be with Jesus on Sunday, August 27, 2023, at her long time home in LaCañada Flintridge, California. As one of the first 50 families to settle in Los Angeles in 1865, Toni was a 4th generation Angeleno, born to Louis and Camille Amestoy on March 5, 1935.
Toni grew up in San Marino. She graduated in 1953 from Mayfield Senior School where she was a Junior Olympics champion diver. She went on to USC, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. It was there that she met her true-love match, Mike, on a blind date. That blind date led to a 1956 wedding, a joy filled marriage of 67 years, 4 children, 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. A long-time parishioner of St. Bede’s Catholic Church, Toni’s faith was always unwavering. When first arriving in La Cañada in 1958, Toni and Mike were very involved with the Newcomer’s Club, where Toni eventually served as President. In 1975, she joined the Assistance League of Flintridge and later became a Life Member.

Toni’s greatest joy came from being with her family and friends. She had a smile that lit up any room, and a heart filled with love and compassion that shined even brighter. Whether it was swimming stroke for stroke as the sun set in Hawaii with Mike, traveling across the US in their motor home, or time spent with children and grandchildren, Toni was oh so happy.

Toni will be truly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her and enjoyed her company. If she were here today, she would encourage you to talk to God, say your prayers, take a swim at sunset, always do your best; whatever your best is and be true.
A funeral mass was held at 11am on November 11, 2023 at St. Bede’s Catholic Church, La Cañada followed by a celebration of life.

Charles “Chuck” Gillespîe, of  Ridgecrest, Calif., passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family, his wife Sharon, and their beloved pets. He was born July 19, 1934, and passed away on Nov. 12, 2022.  Dad was born to Walton and Marion in Illinois and is survived by his brother Jack and Jack’s lovely wife Sylvia.

After finishing high school, Dad enlisted into the United States Navy as a sonar technician. After his military service, he entered college to study English, later becoming an English and Literature teacher for high school students. A man always up for a challenge and with a desire to give back, Dad found a calling in teaching troubled students in inner city schools. He was loved and adored by students from all walks of life.  After moving from Oakland, Calif., to Ridgecrest, Calif., Dad decided to explore a new career in the automotive industry as a finance director. He would go on to join the local Ridgecrest chapter of the Elks Lodge (Chapter 1913) where he was elected twice as the Exalted Ruler. During his time serving the Elks, he met the love of his life Sharon, who he would go on to marry and spend 27 happy years with. Sharon was his world, his right arm, and his soulmate.

Dad loved his friends and was blessed with a large family, including his 10 children, 18 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren. His family and friends will forever remember that he always kept a smile on his face, loved everything from Shakespeare to religious songs, and greeted everyone with a booming and warm voice.

Dad lived his life with passion; he had enough passion for several people.  A true poet and wordsmith, his passion was evident in how he would assemble words thoughtfully in his daily speech, as well as for poems that were not only captivating, but moving.  Through mastering the English language, he became skilled at crafting words together in a way that would touch even the hardest of hearts.  It was pure love and joy for him to recite so many poems and songs, and it was an honor for those who were lucky enough to listen to them.

Dale Gillespie
Dale Gillespie

Dale Gillespie  age 67, beloved husband, father and grandfather has entered our Eternal Father’s loving embrace. Born in Bessemer, Alabama to John & Annie Gillespie, at age 8 they moved to Roseville, CA. Dale was first a family man who adored his wife, Debbie, of 50 years from the age of 16 when he first saw her in the HS office where she was the assistant to the counselor and he was student body president. He adored his three children, Liz, Nate & Katie, whom he never missed an opportunity to spend time with. Together the family enjoyed motor home trips to beaches, the South West, Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, Disneyland and cherished the annual trips to Maui where they had uninterrupted fun together. Dale never fell short to inject a witty comment to make everyone laugh in conversation. He was not only dedicated to his family but to his community that he helped build. Dale was a grand optimist always looking on the upside of things. For 33 years, Dale worked in Lodi as a real estate broker, commercial developer and project coordinator striving to bring the best to Lodi with a passion about the wellbeing of his community as illustrated by the countless hours served on various boards to benefit Lodi, the place he lived, was raising his children and grandchildren and would live, worship, play and work here. He served on the original committee that put together the ‘downtown revitalization’ plan giving downtown Lodi a fresh look. He worked as Director of Operations for the Geweke Corp and developed Lowe’s Shopping Center including negotiating the major restaurants and more. Additionally, while searching for land he attended 100’s of late-night city council & planning commission meetings where his quick wit and benevolent ways worked well with our caring city officials as well as the lead Geweke employees and everyone he got to know. For Geweke, he built many businesses including two auto dealerships and a dozen hotels from the bay area to Sacramento Airport area and later, Truckee.

Dale was inducted into Boys & Girls Club Lodi Community Hall of Fame. He served as chairman of a building addition that nearly doubled St Peter Lutheran School where he and his family attended church & school. He also served as chairman of the board at Lodi Chamber of Commerce, past chairman for Visit Lodi! and he loved working with their amazing staff dedicated to introducing the public to all of the wonderful aspects of this area that he loved so much. Dale also loved working with the amazing staff at LOEL (Lodi Elderly) and served as a past board member and chairman. He worked to raise money and locate county funds to build a commercial kitchen so that they could launch Lodi’s Meals on Wheels program. Prior to being asked to join Reynold’s Ranch Partnership, Dale worked for 7 years with Costco to come to Lodi. He also worked several years on relocating Blue Shield as they outgrew their building. The 220 acre site was perfect for Dale’s plan and successfully relocated the Blue Shield Call Center, saving 600 Lodi jobs that created 1,500 more Lodi jobs all of which were otherwise going to neighboring towns. After negotiating with Costco during some very hard economic times, they agreed to Lodi, the only Costco that was built across the entire US that year.
Dale is survived by his loving and dedicated wife, Debbie; daughter Liz (Gillespie) Souza; son Nate Gillespie and wife Jill; daughter Katie (Gillespie) McMillen and husband Brian; brother Dave & wife Nancy of TX; his 6 grandchildren; Julia, Logan, Nora, Roger, Walt and baby Brooks. A private memorial service was held with immediate family.

Harry Robertson Gillespie, May 24, 1922 – February 9, 2013
Business executive, engineer, professor, writer, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, Dr. Harry Robinson Gillespie died on February 9, 2013 at the age of 90. He was born in Chicago, Illinois to Margaret Weisskirchen Gillespie and Harry Robinson Gillespie, Sr. He met his future wife, Shirley Hodek, in the eighth grade at the Riverside Grammar School in Riverside, Illinois. Due to World War II, Harry graduated early from the Illinois Institute of Technology, with a bachelors of science degree in mechanical/aeronautical engineering in February, 1944. He and Shirley were married at the Riverside Presbyterian Church on June 21, 1944, and shortly thereafter he joined the Navy. He was proud of the book that he wrote on mathematics for the Navy and of the work that he did as part of the team tasked with solving the design problems of the F4U Corsair aircraft. It was in large part due to the work of this team that the Corsair became the most efficient aircraft of the war, and led to our country’s domination in the air in the Pacific Theater. While in the service, Harry and Shirley lived in Hartford, Connecticut and in Corpus Christi, Texas. After the service, Harry joined Cinch Manufacturing Company in Chicago and was shortly tapped to head up the company’s new southern California office. He moved his family to Pasadena in 1955, and they established their home on Inverness Drive in Linda Vista. Both Harry and Shirley were active in many community organizations and activities, and they formed life-long friendships with their Linda Vista and La Canada neighbors, including the Hatches, Detoys, Nelsons, Allens, Kennedys, Glasses and Parrishes. Thereafter, Harry accepted leadership positions in other manufacturing and furniture-making corporations, which led to their moves to San Clemente for several years and to La Jolla for more than twenty years. He was a life-long academician, earning a masters in business administration from Pepperdine University in 1975 and a doctorate in business administration from United States International University in 1980. He taught strategic planning and leadership strategies at several universities in the San Diego area. Later in life, he enjoyed writing mystery and science fiction novels which were published. He also wrote a book about his work with the Corsair, which is being submitted for publication. To the end, he enjoyed the companionship of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He delighted in the fishing and camping trips he took with his son Andrew in the last several years. Dr. Gillespie was preceded in death by his wife Shirley. He is survived by sons Andrew Scott Gillespie and Douglas Robinson Gillespie (Cynthia), daughter Anne Gillespie Brown, grandchildren Kristin Gillespie Mahoney (Hugh), Erik Robinson Gillespie (Allison), Andrew Edward Gillespie(friend Julie), and great-grandchildren Ava, Georgia, and Grant Mahoney. Services are pending.

Marjorie Gillespie
Marjorie Gillespie

Marjorie “Joyce” Gillespie,  94, of Danville passed away on October 2, 2025. She was born in Portland, Maine on September 22, 1931 to Carl and Jenny “Edith” Petersen. She moved to Oakland, California when she was 15, traveling by train with her mother and older brother Ronald. In high school, she met the love of her life, Ray Gillespie, who she was happily married to for over 74 years. Besides husband Ray, she is survived by her children: Karen Pearsall (Randy), Randy Gillespie (Debbie), and Kim Foxworthy (Bill). She cherished and excelled at her role as grandma to her seven grandchildren, Mandy Gillespie, Randi Gillespie, Jenna Page (Alex), Jillian Pelayo (Marc) Kyle Pearsall (Jessica), Wyatt Pearsall (Candice), and Caitlin Pearsall. She was a beloved great grandma to eight. She also leaves behind a well-loved brother and sister-in-law, Ron and Maggie Petersen.

Joyce and Ray lived in Castro Valley for almost 40 years. Joyce started married life as a homemaker, but later took classes at UC Berkeley and founded and coordinated a parent volunteer program at Stanton Elementary School. While raising her kids, she and Ray took the family on camping trips, boating and water skiing excursions, as well as winter skiing in Tahoe. Joyce had many interests. Besides being a great cook (renowned for her delicious gravy at family Thanksgivings), she was an avid golfer (two hole-in-ones!), a bingo fanatic (with family crew beside her), and tireless shopper (just ask the grandkids). After moving to Danville, where she lived for 36 years, she delighted in having sleepovers for the grandkids at “Papa and GG’s house” where they shared fun adventures. Joyce cherished her Danville neighbors, especially Carol and Bob, Suzanne and Greg, and Debbie and Charlie, with whom she shared many great times. Joyce and Ray, especially Joyce, loved traveling. They took numerous trips to Lake Tahoe for gambling and sunbathing, travelled to Sweden and Denmark to visit family with Ron, Maggie, and Joyce’s mom, Nana, went parasailing in Mexico, and enjoyed the tropical paradises of Tahiti and Hawaii.

Joyce was truly the heart of our family. For many years, both in Castro Valley and Danville, she and Ray hosted annual Christmas Eve parties for family, friends, neighbors, and coworkers. Joyce and Ray were both gracious and fun-loving hosts who warmly welcomed guests into their home. Our family is blessed with so many fond memories of Joyce that limited space could not fit them all in. Besides being a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother, Joyce embraced her son-in-laws and daughter-in-law as integral and cherished parts of the family. Her illness in these last few years dimmed, but could not extinguish, the vibrant, fun-loving, compassionate person that she was. The family especially wants to thank her wonderful caregivers, Nica and Mac, who, in these last few years, took loving care of her. Their compassion and gentleness toward Joyce were much appreciated.

Died February 4, 2002, age 75,  Los Angeles California after a long illness. After high school Mary worked for at a defense plant, Clayton Lambert making anti aircraft shells for the war effort. She married in 1946 and moved from Kentucky to California in 1947 with her husband and infant daughter. A wonderful and involved at home mother, Mary became active in politics and served as a Golden Girl for the Democratic Delegation from Kentucky during the Kennedy campaign in the 1960’s. An avid reader and crossword puzzler, Mary and Walter enjoyed extensive world travel for several years before her illnesses. She is survived by her daughter Shalimar Gillespie Vavra and her two grandchildren, Severin Scott Vavra and Sabina Sebik Vavra. Words can not convey how much she will be missed. Service was held at Kiefer and Eyerick Mortuary 314 E. Harvard Street in Glendale Ca. on Saturday, February 9th at 11:00 am. Phone (818) 243-1124.

Mary Louise Gillespie, A steadfast, strong, loving, humble Christian, died on September 28, 2012 in Sylmar, California. She was 83 years old. Ms. Gillespie was born in Marion, Indiana on September 8, 1929. After losing her sight in 1940, she attended Indiana State School for the Blind in Indianapolis until she graduated high school. Married in 1954, Mary Lou gave birth to Catherine Estelle Stockstill in 1955 and Connie Lucille Stockstill in 1957. Shortly thereafter, Mary Lou lost her hearing and became deaf. By putting her trust in God (whom she always referred to as “The Proper Authority”), Mary Lou maintained a positive outlook on life despite the multiple tragedies she endured. Since she could no longer hear, she developed a communication system whereby people could talk to her by writing letters in the palm of her hand. This very unique way of communicating made it possible for Mary Lou to talk to anyone who knew how to spell English. Mary Lou conquered and overcame all of the tragedies in her life with the help of “The Proper Authority”. She loved camping, bicycling on a tandem bicycle, and volunteering at Braille Institute. She lived independently in Highland Park up until shortly before her death. She loved her family, her guide dogs, and her independence. She is survived by her daughter Cathy, her son-in-law Art, and her three grandchildren.

Her funeral was held at Callanan & Woods Scovern Mortuary at 511 S. Central Ave. in Glendale on Saturday, October 6 at 10:00 a.m. A reception followed thereafter at Commission on Compassion 6819 N. Figueroa, Los Angeles, 90042.

Michael Gillespie

Michael Dennis Gillespie was born on May 1, 1954, in Yuba City, CA, and passed away on April 12, 2025, in Marysville, CA. A lifelong resident of this area, he grew up in the towns of Yuba City, CA, and Biggs, CA, graduating from Biggs High School in 1972, and then California State University, Chico, CA, in 1979, with a bachelor’s degree in business. He was the eldest child to three sisters.

Before college graduation, Mike worked at the Radio Shack on Bridge Street in Yuba City, CA. Michael later joined Sweco Products in Sutter, California, where he took great pride in delivering exceptional customer service, designing agricultural machinery for specific needs of his clients. The only instance of a non-agricultural project was probably when Mike had the opportunity to design the hydraulic cylinder lifts used for the torch lighting ceremony at the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, CA. A lifelong motorcycle enthusiast, Michael grew up riding dirt bikes and eventually competed in speedway racing. He was a lifetime member of the American Motorcycle Association. His modes of transportation included his pick-up, his Harley, his Buell, and even his bicycle which he rode to work from Yuba City, CA, to Sutter, CA.
Mike also spent many hours playing racquetball at the Kangaroo Courts/Body Express and took part in many tournaments. Mike was a passionate Sacramento Kings fan, following the team faithfully through the years with their ups and downs. He also enjoyed dining, traveling, and volunteering. Michael was a devoted blood donor, making 343 donations, or 24 gallons, during his lifetime, which embodied his generous and caring spirit. He was a grateful member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church and a regular at their Men’s Luncheon group.

Michael was preceded in death by his mother, Martha Iverson; stepfather, Milton Iverson; first wife, Donna Gillespie; and stepson, Brian Waling. Patricia Gillespie
Patricia Gillespie

Patricia Ann Gillespie On Saturday, July 19, 2025, in a burst of yellow and blue, Patricia Ann Gillespie joined loved ones in the Heavenly Kingdom. Born April 11, 1933, in Monmouth, Illinois, to Arvid and Edythe Johnson, Pat grew up on the family farm in the community of Larchland. She was an active 4-Her, winning ribbons for pigs and calves at the Warren County Fair. A cheerleader and homecoming queen for Monmouth High’s Zippers, she later attended Blackburn College and the University of Illinois, majoring in Sociology. In 1954, a blind date with Sam Gillespie over a Coke at Prin’s changed her life–they were inseparable from that day forward, marrying on August 27, 1955. After early years in Dubuque, Iowa, and St. Elmo, Illinois, the couple returned to Champaign and the University of Illinois for Sam’s PhD, during which Pat worked as a social worker. Their children Sam A., David, and Abby completed their family.

In 1967, Mr. Sam Gillespie became Dr. Sam Gillespie and joined the faculty of Texas A & M University as a Marketing professor. The Gillespie family moved to Bryan-College Station and began a lifelong love affair with Texas A &M, the State of Texas and Willie Nelson. Pat became a pillar of the community, supporting the Bryan Boys Club wrestling team, leading the Newcomers Club, and working in Texas A&M’s admissions office. Known as the “Social Chairman,” she connected people everywhere she went. Family vacations to the Texas Hill Country inspired the purchase of five acres near Canyon Lake in 1978. Twenty years later, on the same spot, Pat oversaw construction of “Sommar Stuga” (Swedish for Summer House), the family’s beloved gathering spot for 14 years.

Pat’s love for family and her Swedish heritage led her to organize the first Johnson Family Reunion in 1980, a tradition held every five years in locations nationwide. In 2017, she brought the reunion to Kalmar, Sweden, uniting American and Swedish cousins at her father’s childhood home, still standing in Smaland. Her entrepreneurial spirit shone in Brazos Valley Tours. Her travel business organized day and overnight trips to historical sites or shopping destinations. She also poured her energy into Family Outreach of Brazos Valley, supporting young mothers in need.

In 2011, Pat and Sam moved to The Tamalpais in Greenbrae, California, north of San Francisco to be near Abby’s family. True to form, she quickly became involved, managing The White Elephant gift shop, earning “Volunteer of the Year” honors, and helping organize the “Golddiggers”. A devoted sports fan, Pat cheered for the Monmouth Zippers, Bryan Vikings, Fighting Illini, Texas Aggies, Chicago Cubs, her beloved San Antonio Spurs, Coco and Rory. She went to Bay Area baseball games well into her 90s.

Pat passed peacefully with Sam and Abby at her side. She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Samuel Mabry Gillespie; children Samuel Arvid (Lori) of Dallas, David Karl of Atlanta, and Abby Lyn Hoffman (John) of Mill Valley, CA; grandchildren Sam and Wilson Gillespie, and Brooks and Cooper Hoffman; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Ken, Jim, Jean, and Liz.A celebration of life was held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, September 8th at Marin Art and Garden Center in Ross, CA, followed by a reception at The Tamalpais.

Paula Gillespie
Paula Gillespie

Paula Innes Gillespie, (nee Donly) passed away at Sutter Hospital in Oakland California on May 28, 2025, at the age of 92. She was born on January 23, 1933 at Norfolk Heights, her family home, to Margaret I. and Paul H. Donly (a woolen manufacturer in Simcoe Ontario Canada). She attended Simcoe South School and graduated in 1951 from Bishop Strachon School in Toronto. Paula graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from McGill University in Montreal Quebec in 1954. After traveling in Europe, she headed to San Francisco California where she worked as a commercial artist.

There she married Donald Gillespie, an Oakland native and architect, on April 10, 1964 at Swedenborgian Church, not far from her apartment on Nob Hill. The couple lived in Tahoe City for a short time, then in the Richmond District of San Francisco before finding their forever home in Berkeley. In 1985, she lost Donald to cancer. After that, Paula continued to reside in their Russell Street community for many years, spending countless hours in her beloved courtyard, tending her roses and magnolia tree.

As an artist, Paula had an eye for colour. She enjoyed travelling with fellow artists on many water colour painting retreats in Europe and Central America. Closer to home, Paula’s favorite subjects were neighborhood houses, coastal vistas and her favorite spot, Mendocino. She later took up pastels, joining local artists groups to sketch models. This all led to a plethora of art that could be found in every nook and cranny of her home.

She is remembered by her family, Robin Vincent, Hal Donly, Cam Donly and Gwen Gillespie, and their families. Cam and his wife Carol were particularly close to Paula, enjoying trips touring all around California with her over many years and eventually helping her transition from her Berkeley house to her new home at Belmont Village Albany. They were by her side when she passed away.

William Patrick Gillespie, “Willie” 56, of Northridge, California – one the world’s special people – passed away on November 20, 2024 after a fearless 18-month battle with cancer. His infectious laugh can still be heard from the Bronx, New York to the beaches of California and everywhere in between. Willie is survived by the love of his life, Rosemarie Cordero, his three sons Liam, Jack, Aidan, his brothers Tommy and Eddie, his labrador Guiness, and countless family members and friends who adored him greatly.

Willie loved road trips, YouTube channels, the Yankees, coaching his boys, the ocean and the occasional slot machine,  but most of all, he loved people. Willie took a heartfelt interest in everyone he encountered. He would always listen, help and uncover rays of sunshine with passion and compassion. Willie began work in finance and accounting, and spent most of his career at NBC Universal, bringing his insights and managerial skills as Controller, Vice President of TV Distribution and most recently Vice President of Master Data and Fulfillment Operations. While he shined at work, he was even more proud of his job as dad, and spent years supporting Santa Clarita Warrior Football.

Willie now joins his mom (Fran) and dad (Ray) in heaven. Willie’s life will be celebrated in California and New York at dates to be announced.
