Dorothy Gillespie, age 95 of Malvern, died Saturday, August 16, 2014 in the Malvern hospital. She was born on May 19, 1919 in Velie, Arkansas (Ouachita County) to the late William Dexter Gillespie and Bertha Raleigh Gillespie. Reared and receiving her early education in Malvern, graduating from Malvern High School in 1938, she went on to become a research librarian. For 30 years she worked in New Orleans at the Southern Institute of Technology, a research lab. During World War II, she was employed at the Army-Navy Hospital in Hot Springs in the same capacity, sometimes writing letters on behalf of sick and injured servicemen, to their loved ones. She had also worked for the United States Forestry Service. She had a passion for genealogy and was an avid reader. Miss Gillespie was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the local Historical Society. She was a longtime active member of First Presbyterian Church of Malvern. Her survivors include her brother, Roland Gillespie of Malvern, her nephew, Dexter Hill; her nieces, Tommie Hill Gray, Cindy Gage, Cathy Chancellor, and Crystie Brantley; and numerous great-nieces and –nephews, and great-great-nieces and –nephews. Miss Gillespie was also preceded in death by a sister, Marie Gillespie Hill, and brother, Tom Gillespie, who was killed in World War II, and by five half-siblings. A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday morning, August 19, 2014 in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church with Reverend Catherine Allsbury officiating and under the direction of J.A. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Carolyn Gillespie; two brothers, Jimmy Gillespie and Donald Gillespie; and one sister Pauline Pipkin.

He was born September 6, 1928 in Cotton Valley, Louisiana to the late Larkin and Lucy Pearl (Gilbert) Gillespie. Giles served in the United States Army Air Corp and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. He was the co-owner of Gillespie Well Service and served on the Arkansas Oil and Gas Commission for many years and through these years he had met numerous acquaintances whom became lifelong friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ann Miller Gillespie; brothers, Joel Gillespie, L.E. “Pee Wee” Gillespie, and John Gillespie; and sister, Vera Hassion. Rev James Gillespie Jr, 61, of Little Rock walked straight to the arms of his Saviour on Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010. “Big Daddy” as he was known was born on Nov. 7, 1949, to the late James Gillespie Sr. and Ozelma (Butler) Gillespie in Little Rock. A high man of faith, James never let circumstances get him down. He continued to strive for the higher calling of his Lord and Savior. He was proud to serve his country in Vietnam from 1968-1974 and then spent over 20 years as a police officer. Big Daddy was a baseball coach for years and impacted the lives of many boys and girls. He was a member of the American Legion. Big Daddy was everyone’s confidante and was loved by everyone who had the pleasure of meeting him. He will be deeply missed. He was preceded in death by two brothers, LeeAndrew Miller and Donald Gillespie. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Valerie; his children, James Gillespie III and his wife, Linda, Talena Gillespie and her husband, Harold, Kareem Gillespie and his wife, Dana, Lenorris Hughes and his wife, Wendy, Shana Howard, James Garrison, Chelsye Gillespie, Kyle Travis, Kellee Travis and Kameron Muhammad; his brothers and sisters, Gloria Henderson, Ray Gillespie, Ronald Gillespie and his wife, Sherry, Barbara Ann Miller, Denise Gillespie, Melvin Miller and Shena Gillespie; his 14 grandchildren and his six great-grandchildren and a host of extended family and friends. James Harold Gillespie “Jimmy” 78, of Danville, Arkansas, died August 4, 2023. Jimmy was born February 1, 1945, in Visalia, California to the late Robert “Rab” and Edith Marie Ringer Gillespie. He was a faithful member of the Danville First Landmark Missionary Baptist Church, where his late parents were charter members. He was a National Guard veteran. He worked for Union Pacific Railroad, previously Missouri Pacific Railroad for 32 years, many as a locomotive engineer, before retiring to his farm on Highway 80.
He survived a tornado in the mid-1970’s that destroyed his parents’ home, by getting in their car and driving away – the mattress he had been sleeping on just before was found on Danville Mountain. He enjoyed visiting with his grandkids and great-grandkids and watching old Westerns. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Robert “Bob” Gillespie and Henry Gillespie; infant sister, Anna Lou Gillespie; sister-in-law, Betty Gillespie.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Barbara; children, Cheryl Davidson of Little Rock; Jeff and Amanda Gillespie of Danville; Dixie and Scott Smith of Alma; Jill Gillespie of Alma; grandkids and great-grandkids, Scott and Meaghan Gillespie and sons, Jackson and Noah; Monica and Eowyn Davidson and children, Saoirse and Shannon; Justin Gillespie, Caroline Gillespie, Reese Davidson, and Hong Davidson; aunt, Geneva Pledger; sisters-in-law, Roberta (David) Weiner; and Lynda Gillespie and many beloved nieces, nephew, and cousins. She was co founder of the Huntsville Spanish Seventh Day Church, and was a woman of great love, compassion and many talents. He was a member of Central Baptist Church, was an Arkansas State Police Commissioner, a former member of the Board of Springhill Bank now Regions Bank in Springhill, Louisiana, and an avid golfer. He was preceded in death by his parents; former wife, Marzelle Gillespie; brothers, Joel Gillespie and Luther Gillespie; and sister, Vera Lee Hassion. Survivors are his wife, Mary Gillespie of Maumelle, Arkansas; daughters, Janann DeShane of Alvin, Texas and Debbie Hedden and husband Bill of Maumelle, Arkansas; son, Dr. Bryan Austin of Maumelle, Arkansas; brothers, Giles Gillespie of Magnolia, Arkansas, Tillman Gillespie of Houma, Louisiana and Cliff Gillespie of Shreveport, Louisiana; grandsons, Jonathan DeShane, Gene Austin and Jason Hedden and wife Suzanna; and great grandson, Austin Hedden. Funeral service was 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 16, 2008 at Lewis Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Steve Ford officiating. Burial followed at Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Lewis Funeral Home, Inc. of Magnolia. Visitation was Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Julia Simpson Gillespie (Feb 1, 1932-March 19, 2017) from Dumas, Arkansas. 85, of Dumas entered her heavenly home on March 19, 2017. She was greeted by her parents Emma and Arnold Simpson, sister Betty Vickers and her beloved husband of more than 55 years, Lester “Cotton” Gillespie. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Mickey Gillespie (Carolyn) of Eudora, Clay Gillespie of Dumas, Leslie Ercanbrack of Star City, Bill Gillespie (Marsha) of Conway, and stepson Richard Gillespie (Debbie). Julia also leaves behind nine grandchildren, Julie Hammond, Josh Ercanbrack, Christy Ostrowski, Michelle Johnson, Andrew Gillespie, Nicholas Gillespie, Shannon Gillespie, Isaac Gillespie, and Alivia Gillespie, and seven great grandchildren. She also loved Betty’s sons as she did her own – David Wilson (Vicki), Jay Wright Wilson (Terri), and Jerry Wilson now deceased.
Throughout life, Julia was always in motion, either helping Cotton work cattle or the auction barn in Eudora or later working in real estate. She was a certified Real Estate Appraiser after they moved to Dumas. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Dumas, the Susanne Wesley Sunday School Class, and Circle Five, all while raising four children. She was an avid reader, loved playing bridge, and enjoyed cooking. Her wonderful sense of humor never left her – even after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. She would say the wrong words or forget where she was going and just have a big laugh – always believing it is better to laugh than to cry. When she did get upset her words would always be – call JuJu, she’ll take care of it. And she did! Julie was her rock and anchor until the end. The family would like to express their love and appreciation to Dr. David Chambers, Kara Beth Crow and Mr. Bill Canada; Home Health – especially Melissa, Olivia, and Crystal, and Hospice Health Care. The family would also like to express love and sincere appreciation to her next-door neighbor and best friend, Susie Courtney, who went through this final journey by Julia’s side as caregiver and constant helper. Her time and devotion to Julia has been a Godsend and was a true act of compassion and caring, and we cannot thank her enough. Visitation held 5-7 PM, Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at Griffin Funeral Home. Butch was a Navy veteran and retired Captain from the Memphis Police Department, having served there from 1967 to 2001. Lucy W Gillespie, age 90, passed away peacefully on October 9, 2025 in Rogers, Ark. She was born October 20, 1934, in Hereford, Texas, the first child of Chris and Martha Wegner. Ms. Gillespie also lived in Quitman, Pine Bluff, Heber Springs, and New York City during her life. In 1952, she graduated as valedictorian of her class at Quitman High School. Ms. Gillespie made a career as a program manager for the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Notably, as a single parent in the home, she raised four boys, close together in age. She is preceded in death by her husband, James Gillespie; and three brothers: Chris Wegner, of Rison, Fred Wegner, of Kingsland, and Robert Wegner, of White Hall. Ms. Gillespie is survived by four sons: Patrick (and Sue) Bourke, of Norfork, Va., Steven (and Virginia) Bourke, of Bella Vista, Ark., Terrence (and Kim) Bourke, of Tulsa, Okla., and Scott Bourke (and Teri Appelquist), of Lavon, Texas. Mardene Gillespie, “Dene” She was born March 23, 1946 in Marianna, AR to Levi and Sarah Wallace (preceded in death). Mardene or “Dene” had three siblings, Levi Wallace and Lavern Brown, (both brothers preceded her in death) and her dear sister, Merlene Gipson, St. Louis, MO. Mardene confessed a hope in Christ at an early age and was a member of the Mt. Moriah MB Church under the leadership of E.R. Gaines. Mardene answered God’s call on May 7, 2017 in Memphis, TN.
Mardene was a graduate of the 1964 class of Moton High School, Marianna, AR. She was a faithful member of Greater Unity Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend James Bobo. Mardene married Napoleon Gillespie and they remained lifelong friends. To their union are four children, Ladonna (Lee) of Marianna, AR, Corey(Tonya), Maumelle, AR, Erica, Memphis, TN and Nevia, Conway, AR.
Mardene worked for the Lee County School District for 41 years. Although she was recently retired, because of her love for children she continued to work as needed. Mardene had many non biological children that were very dear to her heart. Kirby Anderson and Jennifer (Miller) Johnson were two that she really took on the mother role. Mardene had many grandchildren and great grandchildren that she all loved equally with her BIG HEART.
“Dene” held her Sisters of the Rose of Sharon Singers very dear to her heart. They traveled up and down the highways ministering in music for more than 43 years together, they were family.
Mardene was affectionately referred to as “shouting John” because of her love and passion for Christ. She just “couldn’t hold her peace.” Mardene was loved and cherished by many.
She leaves to cherish her love, fun, cooking, her smile and her singing; Rev. Napoleon Gillespie, her loving children, her grandchildren, her beautiful sister, her In laws, her church family, other relatives and friends.

Neil was born to Miriam and Alex Tharp Gillespie on April 25, 1956. He grew up in Little Rock and graduated from Little Rock Central High School in 1974, later completing his bachelor’s degree at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. ver the years, Neil wore many hats. He was a volunteer, a server, a banker, an artist, an actor, and a potter. But his most important roles were those of son, brother, and uncle. Throughout his life, Neil showed up- (sometimes late, but usually with pies in hand) -redefining what it means to be a family man and bringing smiles wherever he went.
Neil was deeply committed to serving his community. For more than 25 years, he was an active member of Second Presbyterian Church, where he was ordained as a Deacon and served faithfully in many roles. His love for Little Rock extended well beyond the church walls. He worked for many years at the Clinton Presidential Library and Museum Store and served the city through his appointment to the Little Rock Sustainability Commission. He also volunteered with organizations including the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts and Habitat for Humanity, among many others. Wherever an extra set of hands, a welcoming smile, or a well-timed wisecrack was needed, Neil often found his way there. Neil was a faithful member of Alcoholics Anonymous, a journey that reflected his resilience, humility, and commitment to helping others. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Alex Tharp Gillespie Jr.
He is survived by his sister, Catherine Gillespie Talpas (John); his nieces and nephew, Mimi Gavigan (Mike), Abby “Bebe” Considine (Michael), Brother Nipper (Amanda), Brianna Gillespie, and Mary Tharp Talpas; his great-nieces and nephew, Jamie and Murphy Gavigan, Maddie and Emery Considine, and Ruby Nipper; and his special friend, Wrenne Green. A celebration of his life with the community that loved him was held at Second Presbyterian Church on Monday, March 30 at 11:00 a.m.

Ocian Gillespie, Jr. December 2, 1950 ~ June 5, 2023, age 72 years. Oshian Gillespie, Jr., was born December 2, 1950, in LaGrange, Arkansas, the fifth child of Oshian (Sr.) and Rosie Lee (Hoskins) Gillespie.
Oshian Jr., affectionately called “Junior”, received Jesus Christ as his personal Savior around 12 years of age at a revival being held at the Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church in Oak Forrest, Arkansas, under the leadership of the late Rev. E.R. Gaines. He later united with Greater Paradise Baptist Church in Little Rock under the pastorate of the Rev. Jerry Black and was an active member for 40 plus years until illness befell him in November 2022. He served faithfully as an usher, member of the men’s ministry, member of the deacon ministry, and as armor bearer to the current pastor Rev Kendall Summons of the renamed Greater Paradise Covenant Church.
He attended Mt. Moriah School during his early elementary school years until the school was consolidated with the Marianna School District in Marianna, Arkansas, where he continued through his graduation from Anna P. Strong High School in 1969. Following his high school graduation, he journeyed to Chicago, Illinois, for a few months but returned to Arkansas, got married, and moved to Little Rock. He later enrolled in Arkansas Baptist College and earned hours in business administration.
Ochian began his working life at Arkla Gas Company in 1970 and retired some 30 years later from then CenterPoint Energy. He served as co-owner and Funeral Director of Gillespie Brothers Funeral Home. The late Rev. Dr. O.B. Gillespie began training his nephews in the funeral business years prior to his own retirement in order that they would be trained to serve as co-owners at his demise. Monday, June 5, 2023, God granted Oshian Jr. sweet rest. His parents, Oshian Sr. and Rosie and two brothers, Lee and Napoleon Gillespie preceded him in death.
Left to cherish his memory, are his wife of 36 years, Shirley J. Ruthie Gillespie, 85, of Augusta, died Friday evening December 20, 2019 at her home. Two sons, six grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, one sister, and a host of other relatives survive her. Funeral services were held on Saturday, December 28, at 10:30 a.m., at Holy Ghost Academy Church of God in Christ, 927 South 4th Street in Augusta. Interment has taken place at New Quiet Cemetery in Augusta by Branscumb Funeral Home of Brinkley (870) 734-2772

Mildred Elizabeth Gillespie PATTERSON, 96, passed away on Monday, September 30, 2019 in Hot Springs, Ark. Mildred was born on August 7, 1923 to the late James Harvey and Cornelia Elizabeth Thompson Gillespie in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Robert Harold Patterson whom she married on January 14, 1949, brother, James Harvey Gillespie Jr., brother, Jack Lee Gillespie and daughter-in-law, Gail Ragland Patterson, along with many cousins and friends. Mildred is survived by her son, James Gillespie Patterson (Kay) of Hot Springs, daughter, Gail Elizabeth Patterson Davis (David) of Little Rock and son, Robert Harvey Patterson (Debra) of Midland, Texas, and six grandchildren: Pat Patterson (Wendy) of Spring Branch, Texas, Catherine Elizabeth Patterson DeSonier (Robert) of Lansdale, Pa., Robert Wayne Brewer(Sara) of Monroe, La., Robert Benjamin Patterson (Courtney) of Swainsboro, Ga., Rebecca Patterson Linehan (Russell) of Midland, Texas and Rachel Patterson Figliuzzi (Andrew) of The Woodlands, Texas. She is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandsons.
Upon graduation from Pine Bluff High School in 1940 at the age of sixteen, she travelled alone to New York City for a modeling interview and to spend the summer with cousins in Connecticut. She described the summer as one she remembered because she was given a convertible to drive everywhere she wanted. Shortly after Bob received a promotion and transfer to Tyler, Texas in 1957, she was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 34. Being a strong woman, when told she might not ever be able to fully use her left arm again, she responded that wasn’t a possibility with three small children. She was the longest living survivor of breast cancer in Arkansas and won the award for such when she walked in the Susan G. Kamen each year. In 1965, the family returned to Pine Bluff for six years and she was able to reconnect with her childhood friends and family. With another promotion, the family moved to Houston, Texas where she and Bob would live for 30 years. After the decision was made to downsize, they moved to Trinity Village in Pine Bluff. Although Mildred lost Bob shortly after their move on March 10, 2000, she remained in Pine Bluff for 10 years. In September 2010, she moved to West Shores Retirement Community in Hot Springs, Arkansas, where she was able to reconnect with her longtime friend, Dorothy Mcclanahan. Mildred was very active in her churches: Central Presbyterian and First Presbyterian, both in Pine Bluff, First Presbyterian in Tyler, Memorial Drive Presbyterian in Houston and Westminster Presbyterian in Hot Springs. She held multiple positions in all the churches over the years. Mildred was also a committed volunteer. She was involved with the Red Cross, Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary, MAM in Houston and Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff. In 2005, she was named Volunteer of the Year at Trinity Village. In 2006, Mildred was one of the statewide recipients of the Amazing Spirit Award given by Baptist Health. Mildred enjoyed playing all kinds of games, but thoroughly enjoyed playing bridge throughout her life. She taught Gail to play when she was 10, the same age when she had learned. Spending time with her family was very important to Mildred. This included taking Cathy and Robert on week long vacations every summer, family trips to the Bahamas, Acapulco, Sante Fe, picking cherries in New Mexico, Cloudcroft for Christmas, New York City to watch Rebecca play in Carnegie Hall, dance recitals, picking apples in Pennsylvania with Cathy, watching Robert compete in Judo and listening to him when he preached. Playing poker until very late each holiday the family gathered. She and Dad often laughed about how it started small and the family grew to 31! The family would like to thank her loving caregivers Beverly Puckett and Marti Figueroa. Words cannot express how dear you have become to us. A memorial service was held Saturday, October 5th at 2:00PM at West Shores Retirement Community located at 2607 Albert Pike, Hot Springs, Ark., with grandson Robert Brewer officiating.
Jane Gillespie STARLING, 74, of Little Rock, died Friday, Oct. 9, 2015 after a brief illness. The longtime Pine Bluff resident was born June 17, 1941, in Norfolk, Va. to the late Admiral Thomas Evan Gillespie and Wilma Jane Stephens Gillespie. Moving to Pine Bluff in the early 1950s, she was a 1959 Pine Bluff High School graduate. She attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. Jane also was a Vanderbilt cheerleader, and that is how she met her future husband, Jeff Starling, who was a starting football player for the Commodores. A few weeks after graduation, she married Marion Jefferson “Jeff” Starling, Jr. in Pine Bluff on June 22, 1963. Jane, Jeff, and their children returned to Pine Bluff in 1969 where she lived until moving to Little Rock in 2010. While living in Pine Bluff, Jane served many charitable organizations and was actively involved in the Pine Bluff schools and community. She was past president of the Junior League of Pine Bluff, former president of the Arkansas Vanderbilt Club, and former president of Volunteers in Public Schools in Pine Bluff. She also served as the Jefferson County Coordinator for Governor Clinton’s 1990 campaign, Coordinator of Freedom Fest in 1991, Development Officer for the Arts and Science Center for Southeast Arkansas from 1992 to 1997, then Guest Relations Specialist for Jefferson Regional Medical Center from January of 1997 to June of 2006. Jane also volunteered on the Governor’s Mansion Association Board, Old State House Museum Associates Board, and the Governor’s Mansion Commission. She also was a member of the Mathontes Club, Junior Sesame Club, and the Hawthorne Book Club. She was a longtime and active member of First Presbyterian Church in Pine Bluff, where she served as an Elder and the Chairman of the Memorials Committee. Upon moving to Little Rock, she became an active member of Second Presbyterian Church. Jane was preceded in death by her husband and her niece, Susan Gillespie Elliott. Her survivors include two sons, M. Jefferson “Jeff” Starling III (Sumner) of Birmingham, Ala. and John T. Starling (Vicky) of Little Rock; brother, Thomas Evan Gillespie, Jr. (Sally) of Georgetown, S.C.; grandchildren: Jane Perry Starling, Walker Starling, Pierce Starling, and Walton Starling; and longtime friend, Mike Riggs of Peachtree City, Ga. The family also wishes to thank Dr. Brad Thomas for his extraordinary care for her during her illness and to Second Presbyterian associate pastor, Dr. Karen Akin, for her daily support. Jane enjoyed entertaining, traveling, fishing, bridge, crossword puzzles, cheering for Vanderbilt, and all of her clubs and organizations. Most importantly, she loved spending time with her family. She lived her life faithfully by serving God and others. She never met a stranger and she spent a lifetime caring for family and friends. Service was Thursday, Oct. 15 at 10:30 a.m. at graveside in Pine Bluff in Bellwood Cemetery by Ralph Robinson & Son, with her niece, Reverend Emery Gillespie, officiating. A memorial service followed at 2 p.m. at Second Presbyterian Church in Little Rock with Reverend Steve Hancock officiating.
