ONTARIO, CANADA CENSUS RECORDS 1861

This census followed the model established for 1851, included 60 columns of information, such as the type and quality of the housing in which families lived, the type and quantity of livestock and carriages of townspeople and persons not farmers. the quantity of land attached to the tennant, the name of any business or manufacturer in which the person was involved and so on. The additional Agriculture Census included 69 columns of information and identified the property by concession and lot numbers, acres under cultivation, crops, pastureland and so on.This gives the reader some insight into the life and style of the inhabitants. However, two important pieces of information were left out: origin of the inhabitants, giving instead the place of birth. Relationships between the various household members is also missing.  These missing items were corrected on the 1871 census. The following is an index of those living in Ontario in 1861.
