In reading the introductory remark in this volume, here are some things of particular interest: “The classifications under the headings of English, Scottish and Irish is not trustworthy. e.g. No Scottish are enumerated in the county of Monaghan. No distinction is made between Irish and Welsh, there is evidence many Welsh settled in Ireland under the Tudor regime and under Cromwell’s regime. The Anglo Normans are classed as Irish in this census especially in Wexford.”
In Ulster the Scotch appear to have been widespread, with the exception of the county of Monaghan and the greater part of Antrim. Only Glenarm in Antrim is recognized as having Scottish presence, although there is a strong historical record of Scotch presence predominating in other parts of the county. Glenarm was populated by peoples of Hebridean stock who language was Gaelic, under the Lordship of the McDonnells, earls of Antrim.
Among the baronies, Sligo boasts no English within its borders.
The Poll Money Ordinance of 1660 –to raise money towards the supply of the Army. Each person over the age of 15 years of either sex, whether yeoman, farmer or farmer’s wife, shall pay 12 pence. Every other person of either sex above the age of 15 years, under the degree of a Gentleman or Gentlewoman shall pay two shillings. Every other person of either sex above 15 years of age under the degree of Esquire or Esquir’es wife or widow shall pay four shillings. That every other person of either sex, above fifteen years of age under the degree of Knight or Knight’s wife or widow shall pay 10 shillings. That every person of either sex above the age of 15 of the degree Baronet or Baronet’s wife or widow shall pay twenty shillings. That every person of either sex above the age of 15 years with the degree Baron or Baron’s wife shall pay thirty shillings.
