Overland Park, Kansas – Betty was born April 16, 1931 in Clarksville, Arkansas to Harlan and Ferriel Johnson. She passed away with her daughters by her side in Overland Park, Kansas on May 1, 2021.
Betty and Blackie Gillespie were married on April 15, 1951 at Camp Stoneman, CA. They lived in Little Rock, AR until being transferred to Overland Park, KS. After Blackie died in 1975, she put all the love and strength she had to care for and support her daughters. She retired in 1998 after a long and successful career with Computer Science Corporation. Betty most enjoyed reading, conversation and traveling with her family and numerous friends. She made regular trips to her beloved Arkansas to visit family. She cherished spending time with her grandchildren and was thankful to have such a great relationship with both sons-in-law, Brad and Dan.
Survivors include her daughters, Pam (Brad) Grieves of Auburn, KS and Kim (Dan) Penner of Prairie Village, KS; grandchildren, Kimberly Grieves (Shaun McLean) Frisco, TX; Will Penner (Yesenia Flores), San Diego, CA; Rachel Grieves, Topeka, KS; Erin Penner, Fort Collins, CO; sisters-in law, Rachel Johnson and Geneva Pledger. She is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and friends.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband Hays “Blackie” Gillespie, brothers Dean Johnson and Harold Johnson and sister Anna Spanke. A celebration of life was held at 11:00 AM on May 22, 2021, at Rolling Hills Presbyterian Church, 9300 Nall Ave., Overland Park, Kansas 66207.

Diane Lynn Gillespie.  Funeral services for Diane Lynn Gillespie, 52, Merriam, will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Grainfield United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Grainfield Cemetery.
Ms. Gillespie died Sunday, March 29, 2009, at the Overland Park Regional Medical Center. She was born June 4, 1956, in Quinter, the daughter of William D. and Beulah Maddox Gillespie.
Ms. Gillespie was a 1974 graduate of Wheatland High School in Grainfield and a 1978 graduate of Kansas State University. She was a member of the KSU Alumni Association. Ms. Gillespie was a contract specialist for Social and Rehabilitation Services in Kansas City, Kan., for 30 years and also worked part-time for CVS Pharmacy.
She was a member of the Birthday Club and collected teddy bears.
Survivors include her mother, Beulah Gillespie, Grainfield; three brothers, Kim Gillespie and wife Gloria, Roscoe, Texas, Terry Gillespie, Ulysses, and Mark Gillespie and wife Brenda, Sevierville, Tenn.; and four nephews, Kevin and Corey Gillespie, Matthew Stranghoner and Jimmy Griffin. She was preceded her in death by her father and a brother, Gail Gillespie. The family  greeted friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Warren-McElwain Mortuary Eudora Chapel and from noon to 1:30 p.m. Friday at the church in Grainfield.

Donald Martin Gillespie, July 21, 1953 – June 24, 2010 .  Donald Martin Gillespie was born July 21, 1953, in Quinter, KS, to the late Varney ‘Pete’ and Margaret (Schurr) Gillespie. He passed away Thursday, June 24, 2010, in the Gove County Medical Center at Quinter, at the age of 56. As a young child, Don and his family resided in Grainfield where he attended elementary school, and graduated from Wheatland High School in 1971. In 1973, he earned an associates degree from Colby Community College. He then worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation from 1973 to 1987.

On May 16, 1981, Don was united in marriage to Linda Kay Heier in Park. They made their home on a farm south of Park and he became a full time farmer after his father’s passing in 1987. Don later completed the Residential Electrician Course from North Central Technical College in Hays and started operating his own company known as Gillespie Electric. He enjoyed wiring and helping others in between his farming duties.

Those left to mourn his passing are his wife, Linda, of Park; his sister, Patricia ‘Patsy’ Mendenhall and husband, Terry, of Gove; and many nieces and nephews. His parents and a sister, Karan Kay Gillespie preceded him in death.

Don had a huge heart and his love for animals and people, especially children, was evident when he supplied candy and popsicles to the school children. He treasured the smiles on their faces. His greatest attribute was his sense of humor and no one was exempt from his joking and teasing. In his spare time, Don enjoyed reading and watching history shows.

Visitation for Don was held 5:00-7:30 PM Monday, June 28, 2010 at Schmitt Funeral Home in Quinter. KS with vigil service at 7:30.

Donna Lee Gillespie,  passed away Thursday, June 18, 2020. She was born January 27, 1933 to Lloyd and Mary Norris in Garnett, Kansas. Donna graduated from East High School in 1951. She loved to work in the yard gardening and watching the birds. Donna enjoyed sewing, especially making clothing for her children and grandchildren. Jack and Donna loved traveling the world and seeing beautiful sights together. She was preceded in death by her parents. Donna is survived by her husband of 68 years, Jack; daughters, Debbie Gillespie, Paula (Bob) Cullinan, and Sharon (Brad) Smith; grandchildren, Joseph Cullinan, Thomas Cullinan, Rebecca Smith, and Jennifer Smith; great-grandchildren, Brooke and David. Jane was born Jan. 10, 1926 to Dr. E. Harry Clayton and Leora G. (Gunn) Clayton in Arkansas City. She graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1944. Jane went to work for Mutual of New York Life Insurance, where she continued until her retirement in 1986. She received many accolades for her involvement with LICOMA. James C. Gillespie, 87, Overland Park, KS, passed away July 31, 2003, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Sunday, August 3, at McGilley & Hoge Chapel, with a religious service at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian burial was held 10 a.m. Monday, August 4, 2003, at the Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 71st & Metcalf, Overland Park, KS.  James was born to the late James and Cecilia (Carlson) Gillespie July 21, 1916, in Columbus, KS. He graduated from Mineral High School in Mineral, KS. James attended KU and was a graduate of George Washington University. He attended law school at George Washington University. James was a veteran of World War II who participated in the Battle of the Bulge. While in the Army, he was promoted from buck private to Master Sergeant in six weeks. He worked for the Corps of Engineers in Washington, D.C. He transferred to Kansas to work for the Internal Revenue Service in 1948, working in Topeka, Pittsburg and Kansas City. While working for the IRS, he worked for the fraud squad and the organized crime drive. Mr. Gillespie was a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus, former member of the Jet Set Square Dance Club and several round dance clubs. He had been a member of the Queen of the Holy Rosary Parish since 1960. He also enjoyed bowling, golf and attending activities with his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Mary Gillespie of the home; son, Jim Gillespie and wife, Kim, Overland Park, KS; daughter, Nancy Geiger and husband, Larry, of Overland Park, KS; four grandchildren, Molly and Maggie Gillespie, Brian and Laura Geiger. James D Gillespie “Jim” Jim was born on February 14, 1939 in Kansas City, Missouri. He was the son of Glenn H. and Clara Elizabeth (Blackwell) Gillespie. He grew up in Independence, Missouri. He attended Lee’s Summit High School. Jim worked as a short order cook at the age of 16. Following his stint as a chef he worked on the line for Leed’s General Motors (Fisher Body) for 30 years. He was a member of the UAW and a committee man. He was married to Judy Robnett on April 2, 1960 at Roanoke Baptist Church. They had two sons together, Robby and Ronald. Jim was preceded in death by parents Glenn and Clara, brother Robert, wife Judy, and son Robby.

He is survived by his son Ronald (Ronny) Gillespie and wife Jennifer; grandchildren Gailen Gillespie (Andrea), Kristina Grimmett (Jeremy), Robin Gillespie, and Rachel Gillespie (Lake); great-grandchildren Lucy, Khole, Lincoln, Everly, Adrien, Abigail, Karlie, and Kinley; sister-in-law Polly Robnett; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family. A visitation was held one hour prior to the service. Funeral service was at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, April 19, 2023 at Mt. Janie was born in Coffeyville, KS on November 11, 1943, to the late Mildred (Bailey) Forgey and August Henry. Janie had worked as switchboard operator at Coffeyville Memorial Hospital, a waitress at her family’s restaurant, an Avon group leader, and spent many years as a homemaker caring for her family with love. She enjoyed crafting and going to garage sales, but singing was one of her greatest passions and she spent many years singing gospel music in church. Sharing her love for Christ was very important to Janie and music was one of the ways she shared that love. On April 28, 1975 she married Gary Gillespie in Wichita, KS who survives her. K.C. Alexander Joe Gillespie, 20, of Edwardsville, KS passed away March 11, 2018. Visitation was 2-4 p.m., service 4 p.m. Saturday, March 17, at the Alden-Harrington Funeral Home. This will be a double service with his grandfather, Russell J. Mantooth, that passed away on Monday, March 12, 2018.

K.C. was born Jan. 30, 1998 in Kansas City, KS, the son of Michelle Mantooth Gillespie and Kenneth C. Gillespie II. K.C. attended White Church Elementary, Arrowhead and Eisenhower Middle Schools where he enjoyed playing football and Bonner Springs High School. K.C. showed up surprising this whole world from the time he was born. He was the fifth generation living on his father’s side of his family. Like most kids he was always on the go and loved the outdoors. He enjoyed X-Box video games, rap music, The Walking Dead, tinkering with cars with his Uncle Damian and would always have a Mountain Dew in his hands if he could. K.C. had but one love of his life Tamara Roberts and together brought into this world Kali Marie Lynn Gillespie. He was so proud to be a daddy and was a great dad to her. K.C. was very adventurous and never met a stranger. He loved to watch football and basketball with his Grandpa Russell. Family and friends meant everything to him and he was proud to have recently begun employment at Smithfield Foods in Edwardsville, KS. K.C. is survived by his parents Michelle Mantooth Gillespie and Kenneth C. Gillespie II; brothers Quentin and Parker Gillie; his love Tamara Roberts and daughter Kali Marie Lynn Gillespie all of Edwardsville, KS. Lois M Gillespie, “Peggy” 91, died Nov. 19, 2008 at Via Christi Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita, Kan. She was born May 19, 1917, north of Zenda, Kan., the second child of William Victor and Mary Grace (Martindale) Wright. Lois graduated from Zenda Rural High School in 1933 and Southwestern College at Winfield, Kan., in 1939 with majors in English and Latin. On May 31, 1941, she married Victor Allen Gillespie, a recent graduate of the Air Corps flying school at Kelly Field, Texas. They lived in Wichita, Kan., Indianola, Iowa, and Boulder, Colo., retiring at last to her grandparent’s farm near Zenda. At the time of her death, she was a member of the Zenda United Methodist Church, the P.E.O. Sisterhood, Daughters of the American Revolution, and Zenda Federated Music Club. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, William; her husabnd, Colonel Victor A. Gillespie, U.S.A.F retired, and her only daughter, Vicki Gillespie Mickelsen. She is survived by her sister, Mary M. “Tommy” Coberly of Seattle, Wash. and sons, James M. Gillespie of Boulder, Colo. and William B. Gillespie of Tucson, Ariz. She is also survived by two daughters-in-law; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Zenda United Methodist Church with Rev. Martha Lee Rasmussen Gillespie, 86, of Leawood, Kan., passed away Tuesday, December 15, 2009. A Celebration of Life Service was held at 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 18, at United Methodist Church of the Resurrection, 13720 Roe, Leawood, KS 66224. Private burial. Marty was born the only child of Clarence and Faye Rasmussen of Scarsdale, New York, on Aug. 24, 1923. She attended Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., where she met her husband, John D. Gillespie of Camden, Ark. They were married Nov. 6, 1943, and enjoyed 66 years of marriage. Marty was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband and three children, Martha Nell Riechers (Harry) of Mexico, Mo., Nancie Faye Dischinger (Mark), of Leawood, and the Reverend Dr. John D. Sheryl Lynn Gillespie, 61, passed away on July 29, 2026, in Kansas City, Kansas after a long battle with cancer. She was born on October 8, 1964 in Dodge City, KS, to Jim and Shirley (Tepe) Barnett.Sherri graduated from Dodge City High School and went on to earn an Associate’s degree in business from Dodge City Community College. She worked in various local businesses throughout her career, retiring as a cook and bartender at the United Wireless Arena. She was a member of the Dodge City Women’s Bowling Association, ABATE of Kansas-District #7, U & I Riders of Dodge City and Dodge City Women’s Chamber. She was a very active member of the American GI Forum, serving as current Women’s Auxiliary Board Secretary as well as a past sergeant-at-arms. Sherri enjoyed many activities including: cornhole, softball, pool, bow shooting and golf.She is survived by her mother, Shirley Barnett; loving partner, Bobby Brown; siblings, Deborah Duty (John) and Terence Barnett; as well as a multitude of loving family and friends. Sherri is preceded in death by her father, Jim Barnett.

The Memorial Service was held on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at 11:00AM at Swaim Funeral Home with Fr. Ted Stoecklein with a burial to follow at a later date in Dodge City. There will be no visitation as cremation will take place.

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Vicki Gillespie of Junction City, Kansas, born in Herington, Kansas, who passed away on January 17, 2024, at the age of 66. She was predeceased by: her parents, Vernon Duncan and Gloria Duncan (Smith); and her siblings, Eddie Smith, Terry Smith and Debbie. She is survived by: her son Eli (Jennifer). She is also survived by three grandchildren. Funeral and graveside service Saturday, Jan 27th at Shadybrook Cemetery.

William R Gillespie, “Bill”, passed March 8, 2024 surrounded by family and friends and in the loving care of Home Health and Hospice of Dickinson County and Abilene Memorial Hospital staff who treated him like family. Bill was born March 16, 1949 in Marysville, Kansas the son of Robert U and Ethel E. (Brandt) Gillespie. After living briefly in Waterville, his family moved to Abilene and he attended local schools. After graduating Abilene High School in 1967, Bill’s work centered around his passion of cars and automotive repair including Sinclair/Ambulance Service for True Meserve, John’s Conoco (now John’s Service) for John Dunlap, Civil Service at Fort Riley, Service Manager at Green Ford, Owner of Bill’s Kerr McGee, and Owner of Bill’s Texaco. During retirement, he worked part-time for NAPA Auto Parts. In all of this work, he enjoyed being helpful and making friends along the way.
Bill enjoyed camping and boating, was a proud sponsor of youth baseball teams, was active in Masonic Lodge #559, was an ambassador for Isis Shrine, serving in the Clown Unit, and Member of Elks Lodge #1675. Bill attended the Demolition Derby reunion in 2014 and was proud to share his 1978 Championship stories with his grandkids.  Bill married Thelma Dolton in 1970, later divorcing. Bill married Cindy Atkinson in 1998. Bill is survived by son Rob Gillespie (Rhonda) of Lawrence and their children Jacob Gillespie and Jenna Gillespie; daughter Lori Wilson (Brad) of Tonganoxie and their children Brandon Wilson and Kate Wilson and his sister Lola Needham (Wade) of Abilene. He was preceded in death by two infant brothers, his parents, wife Cindy, and sister Charlotte (Reeves) Larson. A Celebration of Life was held March 17, 2024 from 2:00-4:00 PM at Abilene Senior Center, 100 N. Elm St.
