Guy Gillespie

Guy Gillespie, 81 passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 13, 2024, to be reunited with many family members including his wife, daughters, parents, and siblings. We find peace in imagining the joyful reunion that is taking place.  Guy was born in Palmdale, CA in 1943 to Charles Gillespie and Thelma Hopkins Gillespie and was the youngest of five siblings. Guy was a native of St. George, UT and graduated from Dixie High School in 1961. He met and married his wife of 51 years, Cheryl Arbuckle Gillespie, in Salt Lake City and  they were later sealed in the St. George, UT LDS Temple. Guy and Cheryl share a remarkable story in that they met and were married in a period of only six days.

Early in their marriage they moved their young family around the country with time spent living in Salt Lake City, Denver, Kansas City, New Orleans, Boulder City, NV and finally settled in Henderson, NV. Guy was a fan of many things, including M.A.S.H., Gun Smoke, Larry’s Country Diner, Matlock, old country music, and Cedar Mountain. He had a knack for seeing old cars and instantly naming the year, make, and model with precision.

Guy retired from Clark County, NV in 2001 and he and Cheryl relocated to Cedar City, UT to be closer to their cabin and escape the Las Vegas summers. Together they served for many years in the Las Vegas temple where they gained many dear friends and acquaintances. They also served a mission in the Cedar City LDS Cannery for four years and served two missions on the Navajo Reservation in Kaibeto, Arizona.

After Cheryl’s death Guy married Nancy Gardner Millett Gillespie in 2016 who he and Cheryl knew from their time serving with Nancy and her late husband, Gordon, in the Las Vegas temple. Guy and Nancy continued their faithful service in the Cedar City temple until shortly before his passing. Guy is survived by his wife, Nancy, his children, Daphne Solomon (Rohn) of Thorne Bay, AK, Karalee Viau (Rich) of Castle Rock, CO, Richard Gillespie (Maggie) of Cedar City, UT, and Charles Gillespie (Terra), of Holly Springs, NC, brothers-in-law Ray Carpenter of Washington, UT and Tom Arbuckle of Gresham, OR, 21 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Herbert J Gillespie age 75, passed away peacefully on November 8, 2025, in Salt Lake City, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on March 1, 1950, to Joel N. and Barbara B. Gillespie. He graduated from Fairfield High School in California in 1968. From 1970 to 1972, he served a mission for The Church of Jesus of Latter-day Saints in Northern Germany. Upon his return, he pursued his education at Brigham Young University and went on to receive his Juris Doctor degree from Duke University. On October 4, 1979, Herb married he love of his life, Carol Winterton, in the Manti, Utah, Temple. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, a man of profound integrity known by all for his honesty and love for others. This was truly how she felt because she devoted her entire life to her family. Katherine was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and faithfully served many years in the Primary and Relief Society organizations. Her faith in Jesus Christ was unshakeable and she knew and understood the principles associated with God’s Eternal Plan of Happiness. While there they met some wonderful people, who became their lifelong friends. As they grew older, to shield themselves from the cold Utah weather, and for their health, she and Floyd spent several months each winter in Arizona. They loved the warm weather and had good friends there, but they always returned to Tooele each summer.
Her service extended to the Tooele community where she was active in the Tooele Civic League, and for many years she chaired the Women’s March. Sandy was born December 25, 1945 in Ogden, Utah to Daryl Stark and Katherine Emma Frost. She was one of 13 children. Her life was a living example of Bible verse Ephesians 4:32: And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ.Sandy married James Ronald Monson and together they shared four children, Mark R. Monson, Lynda Monson, Tracy Gill, and Ron D. Monson. As a young mother Sandy experienced great loss when James unexpectedly passed away. She was determined to make life better for her four young children. She worked hard and saved diligently to buy her first home with a yard. She took pride in learning how to care for it. She planted big gardens yearly, and she especially enjoyed teaching her children alongside her. Each Saturday her children fought over who got to push the lawn mower with mom. Sandy later married Larry N. Gillespie with whom she shared five years of marriage. Together they raised a blended family. Sandy was a devoted wife to her husband and three stepchildren, Teri, Connie, and Doug. Sandy and Larry enjoyed traveling and spending time with family especially on Sundays when she shared pancakes on the patio. After Larry passed away Sandy moved to Denver, Colorado to be closer to family. She was affectionately known as Grandmother to her six grandchildren, Brandon, Jake, Megan, Racheal, Nick and Aubrielle and five great-grandchildren, Josephine, Juniper, Jay, Cierra, and Braxton. Sandy loved being a grandma. She enjoyed special playdates, sleepovers, scary stories, board games and tea parties. Sandy was an amazing storyteller. She was so grateful for this precious time in her life and always made sure to give thanks to the Lord above for the many memories she made.Sandy is survived by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and six brothers and sisters, Jeannie Straight, Larry Stark, Mike Stark, Sharon Diane Hadley, and Terry Stark. She now glorifies Heaven with her son, Mark whom she missed every day; her parents, six brothers and sisters, grandparents, and many aunts and uncles. Sandy was a passionate animal lover and especially adored her dog, Wolvie. Wallace Gillespie, Utah
Wallace Gillespie, Utah

Col Wallace Donald Gillespie, October 18, 1928 — May 20, 2022

After 93 years of adventure, Col. Wallace Donald Gillespie passed away in his sleep at the George E. Wahlen Ogden Veterans Home. He is missed dearly by his family on Earth but is now reunited with his treasured wife and family in heaven that he longed to be with. Don was born in Tooele, Utah, at the beginning of the Great Depression to Sophronia and John Gillespie. He was the youngest of four children, with two older brothers and one older sister. His father worked as an industrial blacksmith and his mother was a beautiful vocalist. Together with his mother, Don listened to opera on Saturdays and sang to the canaries they kept on the porch. In his final years, Don was often found lying in bed singing to his two cats, who rested their heads on his hands while he sang.

Don was a true athlete, which he attributed to his father. His father was a tremendous runner and could jump from the kitchen floor into the sink with both feet. Don made a name for himself in Tooele through high school football, where he earned the nickname “Square.” His mother and his sister Beverly were his greatest cheerleaders. He was always looking out for the vulnerable and used his athleticism to stand up to school bullies on several occasions. When he wasn’t playing sports or working with his family, he would pick up his friends in his Model T Ford or ride the railroad out to The Great Saltair to go dancing.

Once he finished high school, Don played college football on scholarship at Brigham Young University, West Point Academy, and Utah State University. He changed schools because he felt restless. But when he met his beloved wife Ila at Utah State, the restlessness dissolved. Ila was reading a newspaper the first time he saw her. He waited for her to stop reading but she never did. Finally, he asked her if she was going to read that newspaper all night. She stopped reading and they went out on a date. They were inseparable from that point on. Ila and Don were married in the Salt Lake Temple on August 31, 1953.

Don graduated with a BS in industrial education from Utah State University in 1953, and later a BS in electronic engineering from the University of Missouri in 1965 and an MBA from Western New England College in 1977. After a season-ending injury at Utah State, Don joined the United States Air Force. His career in the Air Force began in 1954 as an intelligence officer for the Air Force Security Service. He was later recruited to join an elite covert force that gathered classified undercover intelligence in Vietnam. He climbed waterfalls, ate snakes, and fought for his life in the jungle. It was a time he never liked to speak about.

Through his military service, he moved and traveled with Ila all across the United States and the world, eventually reaching the rank of Colonel. Ila loved the adventure and would always ask him “Where are we going next, Don?” After nearly ten years of marriage and several miscarriages, Ila finally gave birth to their first son Barry in 1962. After Barry, the children came easily, with Nicole, Rex, and Jada following soon after. Don loved his babies and comforted them in the night, even after working long hours during the day. He often mused that “There is nothing in the world better than babies.”

Later in his Air Force career, the entire family moved from Massachusetts to Turkey. They explored and camped in the Middle East via a Volkswagen bus. Afterward, he worked at the White House Communications Agency under President Nixon, where he was recognized with several awards for his service. He later served as the director of Space and Satellite Communications Systems until he retired and joined the public sector. In retirement, he continued traveling with Ila to places like China and Mexico and to visit their beloved children and grandchildren. When he was home in Kaysville, Utah, he maintained the condo pool, which was a cherished gathering space for his family for many years.

Don had a strong testimony of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, which gave him hope of seeing his wife Ila again after she passed in 2014. He often spoke of Ila and other family members who had passed paying him spiritual visits in his final years. He missed them very much. He outlived most of his older family members, which surprised him. He often said “I don’t know how I lived to be this old—I just did.” His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were grateful for his long life. Don was an anchor and a comfort to his family up until the very end. He was always generous with support and reassurance, and everyone who knew him benefited from his stalwart soul and tender heart.

Don leaves behind Barry Gillespie (Nancy) in Kaysville, Utah; Nicole Tippetts (Zach) in Orem, Utah; Rex Gillespie (Lorna) in Layton, Utah; and Jada Peterson (Todd) in East Bethel, Minnesota. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

The viewing was held on Wednesday, May 25 from 6:00–8:00 p.m. at the Russon Mortuary located at 1941 North Main Street, Farmington, Utah. There was another viewing on Thursday, May 26 from 9:30–10:30 a.m. followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints chapel located on 855 East Mutton Hollow Road, Kaysville, Utah. Interment at Kaysville City Cemetery at 1:00 p.m.
