1869

In November 1869, the Suez Canal was finished linking the Mediterranean Sea through the Red Sea south to reach the Pacific Ocean. It was a far quicker route for ships heading to the Far East to places like Australia. Up until then, ships had taken the long route down the west side of  Africa and around its bottom tip at South Africa.
