It is with deep regret we have to record the death of bandsman, John Gillespie, son of the late Mr Gillespie, chemist, Dornoch. He was a gifted member of a most respected Dornoch family. In music he excelled on so many occasions his voluntary services were much appreciated.
Away back in August 1914, he joined of his own accord. He went with his regiment to Bedford in 1914, and in May 1st he crossed to France. Two years ago he was transferred to the band, and being of a most genial and obliging disposition, he did much to enliven the lot of those around him.
Last November, he was in Dornoch on furlough, and was bright and happy in the company of a wide circle of friends, who now deplore his death. His death was announced by cablegram, and after this a letter of his own handwriting was received. It was written on the day he died. Later in that day he was on duty with the band and passed away on his road to billets in the evening. When he lay down as a result of heart weakness, he was carried to the Medical, but where it was found his life was extinct.
At the funeral, there was a large attendance of comrades, and wreaths were sent from officers and men. Previous to the war, Mr Gillespie was a compositor in Aberdeen. There he was held in high esteem by all. Deep sympathy is expressed with his relatives in their sorrow. Lost his life in World War I.
