STEPHENVILLE, Texas — (May 4, 2017) — In 44 years at Tarleton State University, Dr. Joe GILLESPIE has been a teacher, coach, athletic director, department head and so much more. Gillespie, the most familiar of faces in a kinesiology department full of them is retiring, leaving behind what Stephenville Mayor Kenny Weldon aptly called “A legacy.”
Dr. Steve Simpson led the brief ceremony Thursday afternoon in Wisdom Gym, where Gillespie first reported for duty at Tarleton to begin the 1973-74 school year. He went on to raise a family in Stephenville, including son Joseph Gillespie, who coached Stephenville to its fifth state championship in 2012 and is currently an assistant at the University of Tulsa. As he has the last 44 years at Tarleton and more, Dr. Gillespie’s wife, Kathy, was by his side Thursday, while kids and grandkids joined past athletes who were coached by Gillespie in traveling to Stephenville where quite the crowd gathered to pay tribute to one of Tarleton’s longest-tenured employees.
“It’s been humbling and it’s been a great ride. The Tarleton kinesiology department is second to none,” said Dr. Gillespie. “I’ve been to hundreds of these (retirement receptions) over the years, but it’s a lot different being on this side.”
He’s staying on that side this time, he says, after placing a letter of resignation in Dr. Simpson’s box last year, only to retrieve it and return for year 44.
Gillespie hired Lonn Reisman to take over the men’s basketball program in 1988, and Reisman has completed 29 seasons as head coach at Tarleton, along with 25 as athletic director. Reisman, the winningest active college basketball coach at any level in Texas, called Gillespie a mentor, and was understandably emotional during his speech.

Pauline Washington Gillespie, Courageous and beautiful in death as in life, Pauline Washington Gillespie, gracefully welcomed peace at 8:20 p.m. Monday, August 8, 2005. She entered a peace that lovingly embraces all life: the huge, the small, the endangered and the wildly prolific. She lived a life of grace, self-sacrifice, kindness and devotion to her family and friends. Pauline Tillotson Washington was born March 14, 1919 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, of Queena Pauline Gammon Washington, Corning, New York and Joseph Edwin Washington, “Wessington”, Cedar Hill, Tennessee. Her ancestry included: artists, senators, heroes of the Alamo and the half brother of the first president of United States. Pauline met her future husband, Frank Morgan Gillespie, Jr., an avid horseman, while riding in the Battle of Flowers Parade with the Saint Mary’s Hall Drill Team. He immediately fell in love with the stylish and athletic young woman. He often repeated, “After she caught my attention, she never graced another horse.” They began their marriage in the early days of World War II while Frank was assigned as the U.S. Naval Liaison with the Cuban Navy in Havana and had “Paula”, their first of 3 daughters. Their marriage included Ford cars, rattlesnakes, moderately dry wells, world travel, and too many dogs, cats and ponies to number. Pauline’s life centered on her husband, her three daughters, four grandchildren, two great grandchildren and an endless menagerie of animals. She was a member of many civic and social clubs; the most cherished being ‘The Friday Fries’– comprised of life-long Saint Mary’s Hall friends and a few foreigners–and her Monday Argyle Luncheon Group. In 1989, after 49 years of marriage, her beloved husband Frank preceded her in death. We rejoice that they are once again together. Also preceding her in death was her youngest sister, Elizabeth Hotchkiss Washington McNeel of San Antonio. She is survived by her sister, Mary Bolling Washington Holley, Lake Placid, New York: her daughter and son-in-law: Pauline Gillespie Gossett and Robert Francis Gossett, Jr and their two sons: Robert Francis Gossett III and Frank Morgan Gillespie Gossett; her daughter and son-in-law: Zelime Gillespie Matthews and John Kenney Matthews and their daughter in law and son: Catherine King Matthews and Wilbur Lee Matthews II and their two children: Mary Lamar McLeod Matthews and Vance Washington Matthews; and their daughter Zelime Vance Gillespie Matthews. Pauline is also survived by her youngest daughter and son-in-law: Elizabeth Tobin Gillespie and Carlton Gustav Schenken, Jr and his three children: Carlton Gustav “Trey” Schenken, John Spencer Schenken, and Linde Allen Schenken. The family would like to thank Pauline’s loving and faithful friends: Inez Roberta Hooks, Denise Zamora, Lourdes Gonzalez, Mary Bert, George Dears, Willie Jackson, Marilyn Izzell and Toni Robinson. Special love and thanks to Doctor Christopher Kopecky and Brenda Jaye, RN. Memorial Service was Thursday, 4:00 pm St Luke’s Episcopal Church, 315 E Pecan Street, The Rev. Michael Chalk officiating. Robert Francis Gossett III, Frank Morgan Gillespie Gossett, Wilbur Lee Matthews II, Zelime Vance Gillespie Matthews, William Allison Bunton, Joseph Washington Bunton, Jennifer Craighead Bunton, and Ellen Claire Gillespie Inglish. Honorary Pallbearers: Rowena Osborn, Judy Groos, Ruth Campbell, Margaret Saunders Block, Mary Elizabeth York, Carolyn Negley and Emily Ann Browning. Thomas Eugene Gillespie, MD, May 29, 1937 – Sept 25, 2022. Tomas (Tom) Eugene Gillespie was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland on May 29, 1937, to Catholic parents, Vincent Gillespie and Dorothy McGeough, and became baby brother to Paul Gillespie. Tom moved to Clontarf in Dublin, Ireland at the age of 6 where he spent the next 25 years. During his time in Clontarf, he kept busy playing soccer. In 1953, at the age of 16, he graduated high school, entered college and, after three years, went on to National University in Dublin where he graduated in 1962 with a medical degree before beginning an internship at the Mater Hospital. It was on a blind date while in medical school that he met the love of his life, Colette Ann Colclough. Tom and Colette were married on January 3, 1963, in Dublin. They were happily married for nearly 60 years before his passing. Immediately after marrying in 1963, Tom and Colette sailed across the pond to New York on the Queen Mary’s last voyage, before settling in New Orleans. Their plan was to remain in the US for a couple of years, have Tom complete his internship/residency requirements and then head back to Ireland. Instead, they fell in love with the US and ended up having Vincent in New Orleans in 1963 and his Irish twin, Camille, in Virginia less than 13 months later.
After spending two years in Virginia, Tom decided to do a residency in radiology, and headed to Flint, Michigan. After 4 years in Michigan, Tom was drafted by the Army during the Vietnam War. He was stationed at Beach Army Hospital in Mineral Wells, Texas with the rank of Major and he became Chief of the Radiology Department. It was also in Mineral Wells where, in 1970, they had their third child, DeeDee. Tom was so proud to be a Catholic, a husband, a father and a patriotic Irish-American. In 1971, Tom and Colette left the Army and Mineral Wells and moved to their final destination and forever home – Houston – where Tom joined Heights Hospital as a radiologist. Once in Houston, Tom and Colette decided to move out to the “country” (Jackrabbit Road) and built a house in Huntwick Forest where they have lived to this day. They also decided to join a new (at the time) golf club – Champions Golf Club – where they have enjoyed being members since 1973. It was in Huntwick and the Champions area where they have met lifelong friends and where Tom and Colette’s children have raised their families. Tom enjoyed tennis and golf, but his real passion was running. Tom ran in a total of 37 marathons, including 29 Consecutive Houston Marathons. He ran marathons in Boston, New York, Dublin, and many other cities and just finished his final marathon last Sunday! Tom and Colette never forgot their roots and made many trips back home to Ireland to see friends/family and show their children their Irish heritage.
Tom spent nearly 25 years as a radiologist at Heights Hospital along with having his own practice (Heights Radiology Associates) across the street from the hospital. Tom retired from the medical profession in 2007 and spent the early part of his retirement traveling with Colette, playing golf, and running. Sadly, during his retirement, Tom started to exhibit early signs of dementia and eventually moved into a memory care facility in 2013 where he resided until passing. His family is very grateful for each caregiver who watched over him and provided his health care. In addition, they would like to thank Mattie LeGoine, for her devoted care and support. It was his ultimate caregiver, Colette, who demonstrated her tireless commitment and devotion to him every single day, kept him well and managed his healthcare like no other. Tom is eternally grateful for his devoted wife Colette without whom his life would not have been complete. Tom and Colette shared a beautiful love story and incredible life together. They will continue to be the best example for their children and grandchildren. Tom is preceded in death by his father Vincent, mother Dorothy and brother Paul.
Thomas Henry Gillespie age 68, passed away peacefully on February 7, 2024 after a courageous 13-year battle with cancer. He was a beloved husband, father, son-in-law, granddad, and friend. Tom was known for his work ethic, pride for his country, and unwavering love for his wife and family. Tom was born on October 13, 1955 in Medford, Massachusetts to parents Thomas Adrian Gillespie and Adaline Theresa Gillespie. And being from the Boston area, he was a lifelong Red Sox fan. He joined the Air Force at age 19 and later prided himself by earning a position to work in the White House setting up telecommunications for Presidents Ford, Carter, Reagan, and Bush, Sr.. During his years of service, Tom was privileged with the opportunity to travel and see much of the United States and the world (especially during election years). After retiring from the military, he marched on to a second career in telecommunications working for Alcatel, Lucent, Nokia, and finally Ciena.
He is survived by his wife, Laura Gillespie; his children, Mike Gillespie and Rochelle Gillespie, Chelsea Worrell, Ryan Marsh, and Dustin Marsh; and grandchildren, Elias Quinn, Kennedy Worrell, Brooklyn Worrell, Aubrey Marsh and James Marsh.
A celebration of Tom’s life was held on February 14, 2024, at 2:00 PM at New Hope Funeral Home in Sunnyvale, TX. A time of visitation preceded the funeral at 1:30. Ther ewas a separate private family burial service on Tuesday, February 20, 2024 at DFW National Cemetery. Tom is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Adrian Gillespie and Adaline Theresa Gillespie.
Thomas Robert Gillespie II, “Tommy,” passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Memorial Hermann Cypress Hospital in Cypress, Texas on Wednesday, January 6th, 2021 at the age of 82. Thomas was born on May 23, 1938 in Des Moines, Iowa to Thomas Arthur and Mary Gillespie. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, of 58 years, Janie Gillespie. He is also survived by his children Mari Laura Gillespie, Thomas R. Gillespie III and wife, Melinda Rodriguez-Gillespie, Lisa Gillespie Carlyle, and Mary and Buddy Lemmon. His grandchildren Ron M. Bright, April Gonzales, Thomas M. and Candi Gutierrez, Stacy and Dale Pollet, Gabriella Trevino, Ashley Gillespie, Kristin and Brody Jungers, Thomas R. Gillespie IV, Robert Carlyle III, Justin and Jake Richardson, Kyla Davenport, and Stephen and Haley Jane Lemmon. His great grand children Ace R. V and Nolan Gillespie, Aubrey Carlyle, Ulyssa Williams, Issaiah and Elijah Richardson, Elliannie Richardson, and Jay Mason.
Thomas married Janie Gillespie in 1961. Together they raised their family in Stafford, Texas where he worked for Texas Instruments for 17 years. He then followed his life-long dream and opened his own business, Rock-N-Roll Forever at Trader’s Village for 16 ½ years. Then Thomas and Janie opened together, Tejano Music Headquarters in Stafford for 13 years. Their joint effort greatly impacted the Tejano Music Industry. He retired after a life’s long work in 2016.
His life was truly spent loving his wife, family, and music. May we continue to remember him through classic country, rock n roll, zydeco, and Tejano music.
