Evelyn Mary Gillespie, Oct 18, 1932 – June 2, 2022, age 89. Evelyn Mary Gillespie (Heichert) passed away peacefully on June 2nd, 2022. She will be sadly missed by her Son Grant Spelsberg (Coral), daughter Jenny Nemeth (Jim), and stepson Gordon Gillespie (Kathy). Grandchildren Marnie, Jeremy (Shelley), Jenene (Pete), Josh, and Jessica (Tyler), and Great Grandchildren Madison, Linden, Dayton, and Sawyer. Evelyn was born in Vancouver, BC, on October 18th, 1932, and moved to Summerland in 1942 with her Mom and Dad, Jacob and Katherine, and siblings Wally, Helen, and Annie. Throughout her youth, she played softball, where she went on to become a provincial champion at the age of 17, playing catcher and 1st base. Although she was short in stature, she also played basketball in school. She raised Jenny and Grant while working for the municipality of Summerland until she retired in 1975. She then got into various volunteer positions including The Summerland Ladies Legion Auxiliary, coaching softball, becoming a member of The United Church executive, singing in the church choir, becoming a member of the Summerland Curling Club Executive, and tending bar as a volunteer at the Curling Rink. She was honoured as a lifetime member of the Summerland Curling Club and was a long-time member of the Summerland Golf and Country Club.
In 1974 she met Woody Gillespie through working for the city. They married in 1977and built their log cabin out on Logie Rd. This is where the family would gather, from pool games to songs around the organ and Christmas dinners, many memories were made here. From 1989-1999, she held the contract for the Summerland Arena Concession. She ran a tight ship there, always expecting manners from the children. “What’s the magic word?” Jenny and her family soon joined Evelyn and they became a staple at the Arena until 2007. She followed the grandchildren and great-grandchildren around from arena to arena and ballpark to ballpark, always supporting, encouraging, and giving advice along the way to them and their teammates. Always buying 50/50, chocolates and raffle tickets for their sports fundraising. She made every Christmas and birthday special with her homemade almond bark that she would send to family members that weren’t going to be around for the holidays and gave the amount of money in your birthday card to match how old you were. She was the heart and soul of her family and will be greatly missed. A Celebration of Life was held at The Summerland United Church on June 14th at 1:30 pm, with a tea following.

Glenn Gillespie January 9, 1966 – August 8, 2011
Early August 8 2011, our beloved father and husband, brother, uncle and friend went to be with other loved ones that have left us. Glenn was born on January 9 1966 in Edmonton Alberta. He grew up and worked at McGavins Bread like his father had for many years. He played hockey for many years until, he met Angee Gillespie (nee May) in 1987 and they were married in 1990. They had three lovely, caring daughters.. Tamara Elizabeth, Lindsay Natasha, and Jacqualine Renee.
Glenn chose to drive truck early on in life and spent a large part of his life driving his big trucks. He worked for his last 18 years of his life driving to keep his family supported. He had many hobbies and loved his hockey. He cheered for the Edmonton Oilers, even when there just wasn’t a chance. He collected many hockey cards and memorabilia throughout out the years. He loved to go and watch his daughter Tamara play ball and would be the catcher when she needed her daddy, even if it meant sacrificing his old goalie gloves.
He spent many hours with his two other girls Lindsay and Jackie playing their video games on the television. He must have got that from his mother as she was addicted too Nintendo for years also. Glenn and Angee were constant supporters of Karaoke in the last two years. They have met many good and wonderful friends at Karaoke. Glenn had just begun to find his voice with their support.
He loved his music and would sit for hours with our dog Lucky (aka Bean) and listen to songs over and over. He was taken from us way too early, but knowing how good of a man he was, we know he is singing his songs and watching down on us. He very recently lost his mother Elizabeth (Betty) Gillespie and was also predeceased by his father Robert Gillespie, and many Uncles and Aunts.
Glenn left behind to remember him, Angee Gillespie of 21 years of marriage, his three lovely daughters, Tamara, Lindsay, and Jackie, his older brother Wayne Gillespie, (Leona) and their two girls, Nancy Towle-Tronson (Don) and their six children Loyde Hartt-Towle (Sonja), Twyla Lambert (Julian), Tonya Towle (Anthony), Evan Towle, Amanda and Jolee Tronson. Potluck luncheon after the service at the Kamloops Funeral Home. A memorial Service took place at the Kamloops Funeral Home on Saturday, August 20, 2011 at 1:00pm
Gordon Drummond Gillespie, death Match 7, 1986 North Vancouver, BC, age 78
Gordon Stewart Gillespie, 1942 – 2010 It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Gordon Stewart Gillespie. Death occurred on October 3rd, 2010 at Harry Purdy Pavilion, University of British Columbia Hospital, following the effects of a stroke. Gord was born on January 28, 1942 in Saskatoon to Stewart (Hammy) and Muriel Gillespie and is survived by his sister Joan (Bill) Gobert, Saskatoon. Following graduation from Aden Bowman Collegiate in 1960. Gord attended the University of Saskatchewan, spending two summers in Halifax as a sea cadet. It was during these times he developed a lifelong love of Digby Scallops and often could be heard explaining why these were so much better than all the rest. After a year and a half at U.of S., Gord travelled down under where he spent two years working and travelling in Australia and New Zealand. He then returned to Saskatoon and on September 9th, 1967 began a 35 year career with Air Canada as a Ticket Agent. July 1, 1969 Gord transferred to Calgary and in the mid 70’s relocated to Vancouver where he worked until his retirement on May 1, 2001. Gord loved to travel. He diligently sought sunny, warm destinations that were well off the beaten path. His itinerary also included a return to Australia and New Zealand and many trips to London for the big name musicals and plays. Gord’s interest in the family name took him to Scotland where he visited the Gillespie distillery and the Gillespie brewery, proudly proclaiming, on his return, that he had dutifully sampled the far and found it to be first rate. He was an avid fan of both Manchester United and the New York Yankees, frequently flying to the USA to support the men in pinstripes. A friendly and pleasant chap, Gord will be missed by all, particularly his morning coffeemates who met on Denman St. for a muffin, coffee and conversation. A Memorial Lunch was held in Gord’s honour, on Friday, October 29, 2010 at 1:00 pm at the Best Western Sands (1755 Davie Street, Vancouver, BC). Cremation has taken place in accordance with Gord’s wishes. Arrangements have been entrusted to Kearney Funeral Services and Saskatoon Funeral Home.

John David Gillespie, July 9, 1947 – Dec 7, 2022. We are heartbroken to announce that John David (Dave) Gillespie passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday December 7 at the age of 75 in Armstrong, BC. He will be missed by everyone who had the good luck to know him, but above all, by his loving wife of 51 years Pauline Gillespie and his sons David Howlett and Bradley Gillespie (Michelle), as well as his six loving grandchildren and many extended family members.
Dave was raised in Ayr, Ontario by parents (predeceased) Alice and Wilbert, along with brothers Mick and Barry. After high school he began working in construction, leading him to an apprenticeship and certification in cabinet making through BCIT, and eventually his carpentry certificate, of which he was (and should be) very proud. Most of his long career was spent at Tolko plywood plant in Armstrong, where he always took pride in his precision work and a job well-done.
In his free moments he enjoyed all aspects of the great outdoors including fishing, hunting, and sharing these activities with close friends and his grandsons Max, Spencer and Leo. He had tremendous respect for nature and the order of the living world. He walked softly through his life and spread quiet kindness in all of his actions. He relished adventure, tended his gardens with care, and loved a good beer at the end of a hard day. He will be truly and deeply missed by the many people who loved him.
