Alexander Gillespie, 1851-1913. Wife Janet Young Scott 1863-1937. Burial Mt Forest Cemetery, Wellington Co, Ontario. His obit: At about 6;20 on Sunday morning, April 1913, there died at his home in Proton after a severe illness of two or three months, Alexander Gillespie, one of the oldest residents in these parts. He was a native of this district, having been born in Arthur Twp during a temporary stay of his parents there after their arrival from ISLAY, SCOTLAND. In short time they took up land in Proton where the subject of this sketch passed his childhood and youth. Obtaining a public school training, and being bright and studious, he attended the High Schools at Harrison and Fergus, obtaining teacher’s certificates. He taught for four years at No 11, Egremont, and eight and a half years at No 4, Proton after which he went on his farm, Lot 5, Con 8 Proton about 22 years ago. Some three or four years before this he had married Janet Scott of Hopeville, who survives with a family of eight: Mary, John A, Lillian teacher Floradale; Catherine, Teacher no 19 Proton; Janet, Georgina, Wm.

Her obit: Janet Young Scott, relict of the late Alexander Gillespie, whose death occured Sept 20, 1937, was the only daughter on the late Mr and Mrs George Scott of the Tenth of Proton. She was married 54 years to Alexander Gillespie who taught school for 22 years and farmed in Proton. In the summer of 1916 Mrs Gillespie with a son and four daughters moved into Mount Forest, where they have resided ever since. Mrs Gillespie was a member of the Presbyteria Church. This is a family of two sons and six daughters left to mourn. Burial at Mt Forest Cemetery.  In her 74th years.

Alexander R Gillespie (notice from Park River, North Dakota Paper) April 2, 1936.  Death came Friday evening to relieve the suffering of Alexander R Gillespie, who had been ill at his home in this city for more than a year. Mr Gillespie was born at Cedarville, Ontario on June 8, 1866 and came to Walsh County with his parents as a youth. He has made his home in this community since 1881.  MIss Emmaline Morrison of Cedarville, Ontario became the bride of Alexander in 1897. In addition to his wife these children survive: Mrs J E Lloyd, Fessenden; Prs Paul Reinertson, Milwaukee; Miss Ruth Gillespie, Aurora, Illinois, Mrs Sadie Best, MIsses MIldred and Norma Gillespie, Duncan and Harold Gillespie, all of Park River, and two sisters, Mrs Duncan Bell, and Mrs Katie Gillespie both of Crystal, also survive. Funeral service was held at noon Tuesday at the Presbyterian Church in this city with Rev John . K Moffet of Milton officiating.  Internment was made in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr Alexander Gillespie died at St Joseph’s Hospital, Guelph on Thursday, Jan 20, 1972. Beloved husband of Margaret Palmer, in his 79th year.

Mrs Alexander Gillespie, the former Margaret Palmer, passed away Sunday Feb 1974  at the Louise Marshall Hospital, Mount Forest in her 76th year. Formerly of the  Conn-Cedarville area, she made her home in Mount Forest and is survived by her son, William and daughter Mrs John Shaw of Kitchener. She is survived by four brothers, two sisters and three grandchildren. The funeral service was held Tuesday from the Hendrick Funeral Home at 2 pm with Rev Lloyd Clifton officiating. Internment Mount Forest Cemetery.

Burrett Gillespie – see previous article. Mr Burnett of Guelph, was born in Mount Forest and  only son of Mr & Mrs John Gillespie of Sligo Road, Mount Forest, accepted a position of news editor at Radio Station CHML Hamilton, He began his new work Sept 1st, 1952.  He later served as news editor of Niagara Falls Television CHC-TV. He became the manager of the city’s Chamber of Commerce and managed the Hamilton’s Visitor and Convention Bureau. . He was appointed to the Board of Governors of the Lake Erie International Vacationland Association in Cleveland, Ohio in 1961. Obit Grace Elizabeth (Kurzey) Gillespie on Saturday, Dec 12, 1981 at Henderson General Hospital, Hamilton, beloved wife of B. W. Gillespie, in her 53rd year. They had married July 2nd,1951  in St James Church, Guelph. Chosen son by adoption Cameron Douglas.

Donald William Gillespie March 14th, 1939  November 7th, 2019   Passed away peacefully at the Wellington Terrace, surrounded by his loving family, on November 7, 2019 in his 81st year. John Gillespie, a well known resident of Mount Forest for the past 45 years, passed away at Louise Marshall Hospital on Saturday, Nov 14, 1970. He was 82. Mr Gillespie was the son of the late Mr & Mrs William Gillespie, and was born at Cedarville. In 1925 he moved to Mount Forest and he was a well known bee keeper.  He was a member of St Andrews Presbyterian Church. Mr Gillespie was instrumntal in reorganizing the Pipe Band. In 1926 he was married to the former Alice Burnett, who predeceased him in 1966. He is survived by one son, Burnett, Hamilton and one brother, Alex of Mount Forest. The funeral was held at Hendrick Funeral Home on Monday Nov 16. Internment at Mount Forest Cemetery.

John Gillespie    Passed away on Tuesday, May 25, 2021 at Caressant Care in Fergus at the age of 88. Beloved husband of the late Geneva (2017). Loving father of Stephen (Kim), Kevin (Jackie), John, Scott and Heather. Proud grandfather of Ashley (Josh) and Tyler (Melonie). Cherished great grandfather of Tristian, Parker, Charlie and Madison. Mount Forest Cemetery, Wellington Co, Ontario Obit: John Archibald Gillespie, a well-known resident of Conn, passed away on Monday, April 21, at Louise Marshall Hospital following a heart attack. He was in his 81st year. Mr Gillespie, born in Egremont Twp, a son of the late Alexander Gillespie and his wife, the former Janet Scott, Mr Gillespie farmed all his life with the exception of 15 years when he was elevator manager for the Alberta Pool Co in the Canadian West. He was a member of St Alban’s Masonic Lodge for fifty years. He is survived by his wife, the former Marion Ethel Knox, to whom he was married in July 1926; three daughters, Catherine (Mrs E E Dixon, Elliot Lake); Betty, Mrs R. N. Zwicker, Kitchener; and Janet, Mrs Donald Cater, Toronto. Four sisters: Mary, Mrs A Russell, Cedarville; Lillan, Mrs Lorenzo Crewson, Hanover; Janet (Mrs Peter Conn__?Vancouver; and Mi__Ruth Gillespie, Aurora; one brother, W M Gillespie, Sarnia. Author’s Note: Mrs Marjorie McKee of Guelph met me in Erin years ago to walk the cemetery and drive around the area to see the farm of Robert Gillespie where the family was raised, and gave me the background history of this family line to which she was related. Terry James Gillespie January 5, 1941 – December 2, 2018 
Passed away at the Guelph General Hospital. He was among the first group of PhDs to graduate from the newly founded University of Guelph. He became a professor at the same university where he taught Meteorology from 1968 – 2005, became a professor emeritus and continued to work there in some capacity until recently. Fondly remembered by many students and colleagues he met throughout

his career. Beloved husband for 52 years of Lorraine Gillespie (née Wattier). Dad of Carmen Gillespie (Alexander Galant) and Adam Gillespie (Karène Paquin). Loving grandfather of Cynthia, Roman, William, Charlotte and Eleanor. Predeceased by his parents Gordon Gillespie and Margaret Gillespie (née Learmonth) of West Vancouver, BC.  Volunteer instructor of the Weather Course for the Canadian Power Squadron for many years, volunteered at the Guelph Youth Music Centre on their property committee and also on the board of the Guelph New Horizons Band where he learned to play the saxophone. At his request there will be no service. Cremation has taken place.

After a long illness, the death took place at her home on Sligo Road on Tueday, Dec 16, 1947 of Mary Jane Gamble, wife of William Gillespie. Deceased was highly respected, and leaves besides her husband, two sons, Alexander on the eold home farm, near Cedarville, and John of Mount Forest, and a daughter, Tillie Gillespie at home. Also surviving are two brothers, Minno Gamble of Dryden and Stephen Gamble of Meaford, and one sister, Mrs Harry Wallace, Town. The funeral, private, took place from her late home on Thursday, the Rev O, G Locke of Holstein conducting the service. Internment was made in Mount Forest Cemetery. See next entry.
