Betty was born Sept. 2, 1930, in Renwick, Iowa, to Carl and Frances Kelling. She married James Gillespie on April 14, 1951. She worked as a housekeeper, babysitter, home health aide and a writer.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, husband and son, James.

Funeral services were held 10 a.m., Monday, July 26, at the First United Presbyterian Church in Winterset. Burial, with military honors, will be in the Winterset Cemetery. Cecil was born on June 16, 1923, in rural Madison County and was raised by his mother and maternal grandparents. He attended rural Madison County schools, graduated from Winterset High School in 1940, then attended Iowa State College until enlisting in the Army Air Corps in November of 1942. After flight training, Cecil became a First Lieutenant and was assigned to the 9th Bomb Group stationed in Tinian, flying B-29’s on 27 successful missions over Japan. After being discharged from the military, Cecil returned to Iowa State College to complete his degree in Animal Husbandry.

He began his career farming in 1947 and raised purebred Angus cattle for over 50 years, which was his passion. Cecil had served on many boards and clubs, including director of Farmers & Merchants State Bank of Winterset. Cecil married Shirley Jean Souter of West Des Moines on June 27, 1959. She preceded him in death on May 20, 1998. Cecil is survived by his sons, Steve Gillespie of Winterset and James (Michelle) Gillespie of Waukee; daughter, Lori (Dan) Ryner of Winterset; and step-grandchildren, Matthew Sheets and Megan Sheets; and grandchildren, Marcus Gillespie and Amanda Gillespie.

Visitation was Sunday from noon to 8 p.m. at McCalley-Collins Funeral Home with family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral arrangements are being handled by McCalley-Collins Funeral Home in Winterset.

Charles Gillespie, January 21, 1935  –  December 21, 2017. Our dad, Charles A. Gillespie, of Exline, Iowa, and formerly of Davenport, Iowa, went to be with the Lord on December 21, 2017. He was 82 years young. He went to be with our mom, Patricia Gillespie, who passed 14 years ago. He sure missed her. They were married for 48 years and blessed with 7 children. Chuck was born January 21, 1935, in Trenton, Tennessee to Roger and Opal Gillespie, their only child. Yeah, he loved fried food and biscuits and gravy, a good western movie… and his kids. He worked a lot of jobs over the years to take care of this brood, from Oscar Meyer to WG Block to Farm House Foods, managing a skating rink in Promise City and finally, Consolidated Freightways, where he retired as a truck driver.  He drove over 1 million miles, No accidents. That’s something to be proud of. Our dad was an honest man and a hard worker. And REALLY funny. He didn’t try to be funny, he just was.

Dad was a Navy veteran and served proudly in the Korean War, where he also did a bit of boxing. He said he used to eat fish eyes when he was in Korea. Must have had gravy on them. Chuck is survived by his 7 children: Chris (Edna) Gillespie, Exline, Iowa, Kim (Linda) Gillespie, Davenport, Iowa, Charles Keith (Diana) Gillespie, Exline, Iowa, Penny Sorenson, Kansas City, Missouri, Ricky (Rhonda) Gillespie, Davenport, Iowa, Holli (Kenny) Long, Milan, Illinois, and Phillip Gillespie, Kansas City, Missouri, as well as 20 grandchildren and 32 Great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pat, his mother and father, his step mother and 2 grandsons. Funeral services was held at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at Thomas Funeral Home, Centerville, Iowa. Interment will immediately follow at Exline Cemetary.

Dennis Floyd Gillespie passed away at home on January 19, 2023, at the age of 79. He had spent the day with his wife and family. He was working and taking care of responsibilities when Jesus called him Home. Dennis was born on May 30, 1943, in Red Oak, IA to Floyd and Blanche Gillespie. Growing up he enjoyed baseball, basketball, hunting, fishing, and farming. He attended High School in Wales and Coburg, before graduating from Red Oak High School in 1961. This year he was able to celebrate his 60th class reunion. He proudly served in the Army after graduating from High School and was stationed at Fort Bragg.

In 1969 Dennis married the love of his life, Dianne Margaret Derry. They moved to Omaha, and built a beautiful life together. In 1974 they welcomed their son, Jeffrey Shannon, followed by their daughter, Jennifer Ann, in 1975. Dennis worked at Skylark Meats in Omaha for 20 years, and was happy to spend his spare time supporting his kids at all of their sporting events. On the weekends you could find him enjoying time at their place on Beaver Lake and then eventually at their lake home on Lewis and Clark Lake in northern Nebraska.

Over the years Dennis was involved in many business ventures including Pefferoni Pizza, Aksarben Hairstylists, and lots of real estate. Dennis was a hard worker who was always on the go. He did not shy away from hard work. Dennis loved all things sports, photography, sunsets, and Fox News. But above all, he fiercely supported his wife, kids, and grandkids.

Dennis was preceded in death by his nephew, Glenn Bressler. He is survived by his wife, Dianne (Derry) Gillespie; son, Jeffrey Shannon (wife Danica); daughter, Jennifer Ann; granddaughter, Avery; grandsons, Ethan and Bowen; brother, Gary; sisters, Joyce McKennon (husband Phil), and Judy Kay Meyer; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation for family and friends was held on Saturday, January 28th, at 11am at the West Center Chapel, followed by Eulogies at 11:30am.

Elaine Enarson Gillespie  daughter of Don and Charlotte Enarson, was born at home on May 1, 1937. Her 3-year-old brother Tom remembered it as when the doctor brought her to the home in his “little black bag.” Tom and Elaine were joined on August 26, 1946, by younger sister Karen.

Elaine was always very active and had no problem following Tom with his older friends and keeping up with them. She loved the swimming pool and spent many hours there, developing a great tan and good swimming ability. From the time she was young, she was energetic and independent enough to earn herself the family nickname “own way”.

Elaine grew up at a time when family gatherings were common—Sunday dinners with the grandparents, aunts and uncles, and family birthday celebrations. There were many cousins on both sides of the family, and they were all close.

As she grew older, Elaine became a talented piano player, serving as one of the accompanists for the high school chorus and small groups in which she also sang. She played piano to entertain her friends and enjoyed singing along with them too. As the drum majorette for the high school band, Elaine lead the band proudly in their performances at football games and parades.

After high school graduation in 1955, Elaine attended college for two years at Northwest Missouri State University and the University of Iowa. She worked several different jobs after college including at Calvin Hall on the UI campus, a hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, and at the Union Carbide office in Red Oak. In 1965, she met Gary Gillespie and they married on November 6. They bought a home in Glenwood and Elaine worked at the Glenwood Opinion Tribune, proofreading and laying out the paper for many years.

Elaine and Gary had three children, Craig, Karla, and Scott. Their family life was full of their children’s sports, a dog always in the house (many named Burt), and Iowa Hawkeye games. These things were always important to Elaine. Her appreciation of family and especially fun with cousins was passed along to her children and they have benefited from close relationships with their cousins. Her family visited her mother Charlotte and her brother’s and sister’s families often, providing great memories, especially with nieces Laura and Jill.

In retirement, Elaine and Gary bought a home in Coralville, Iowa, where they could be close to two of their children and their families. Elaine enjoyed going to her granddaughters’ sporting events, following the Iowa Hawkeyes, having Iowa City family over for coffee, and making cards for the family. In her last years she enjoyed visits from her grandsons and delighted in their energy.

Elaine was preceded in death by her parents and sister Karen. She is survived by husband Gary and dog Burt; son Craig Gillespie and friend Renee Newton, Omaha, NE; daughter Karla Fay and husband Mark, granddaughters Madison and Rylee, Iowa City, IA; son Scott Gillespie and wife Jill, grandsons Gavin and Jaxson, North Liberty, IA; brother, Tom Enarson and wife Susie, Villisca, IA; brother-in-law Ed Ginger, Northbrook, IL; brother -in-law Dennis Gillespie and wife Diane, Omaha, NE; sister-in-law Joyce Kennon and husband Phil, Red Oak, IA; sister-in-law Judy Kay Meyers, Littleton, CO; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Services were held 10:30, Friday, November 8, 2019 at Wolfe Funeral Home with a visitation 1-hour prior. Memorials can be made to the Elaine Gillespie Memorial Fund. Wolfe Funeral home was in charge of the arrangements.

Elizabeth Gillespie, (Delos Reyes) Gillespie, age 73, of O’Fallon, Ill., departed this life peacefully at her residence on January 8, 2023, and began her journey home to The Promised Land and to her Heavenly Father. “Ely,” as she was known to many, was born in the Philippines on October 8, 1949. She held a beautiful, faithful love for the Blessed Mother Mary and for her Catholic faith. She loved to pray the Rosary and spent much of her time praying for others.
Ely became well-travelled while serving many years as a proud, devoted military spouse. She traveled to numerous places near and abroad. Some of her favorites included McChord AFB, Wash.; Travis AFB, Calif.; Spain, Switzerland, and Germany, which she called “Home” for 14 years. Ely then moved to O’Fallon where she settled and made her home. Ely worked and volunteered in many different roles before her retirement. She took pride in working with Base Family Services, The American Red Cross, Scott AFB Chapel, and feeding US Army soldiers during Desert Storm while stationed in Germany. She often led children in Sunday School. Ely loved to cook and frequently made many of her native dishes to share generously with others. Ely served on many ministries at St. Clare of Assisi Parish, to include Hospitality, Altar Angels, Altar Sodality, Eucharistic Adoration Adorer, and most recently, she laundered and cared for the linens used at Mass – cleaning, ironing, and praying each one to perfection. She also volunteered at St. Clare School, the O’Fallon Food Pantry, and attended Bible studies at the Base Chapel. She had visited Israel and Guatemala with her Beloved Pastor Fa. Jim. Her humble heart, generous prayers, and loving spirit will be missed by many. Left to celebrate the life of Ely are the many friends she met along the way in life, as well as her St. Clare of Assisi Church family, and her St. Vincent de Paul family. Her sisters-in-Christ at the Poor Clare Monastery of our Lady of Mercy in Belleville will feel her absence, as she visited often to bring the altar linens to be cared for by them and generously shared her time and resources with them. Many who knew and loved Ely felt they were in the presence of an angel – her quiet and humble manner was a gift to all who took the time to get to know her. To those who wronged Ely in life, she leaves you Peace. Her St. Clare family will pray the Rosary for her at 10 am, Friday, January 13, 2023 at St. Clare of Assisi Church, 1411 Cross St., O’Fallon. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 am, Friday, at the church, with Rev. James Deiters presiding, and Rev. James Thomas concelebrating. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Shiloh, Ill.

Faye Elizabeth Gillespie, 60, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, July 26, 2021 at St. Luke’s Hospital following a short illness. Services: 12 p.m. Thursday, Teahen Funeral Home by Penny Ackerman. Burial will be at a later date.  Friends may visit with the family on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

Faye is survived by her husband of 24 years, Jeff; children, Eric Jeffries of Cedar Rapids, Jennifer Gillespie of Pella, Laura (Lance) Johnston and Brandy Gillespie both of Eddyville, and James (Kinzy) Gillespie of Des Moines; 14 grandchildren; sister, Kala Hill of Ames; brothers, Joel (Colleen) Jeffries of Chicago and Lyle (Karla) Jeffries of Polk City; mother in law Pat Landt of Cedar Rapids, whom she shared a special bond with; many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews  and her dogs, Polly and Peaches.

Faye was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Jason Jeffries and brother in law Kenton Hill.

Faye was born on October 31, 1960 in Madison, SD, daughter of Jack and Ruth (Conner) Jeffries.  She graduated in 1979 from Vinton High School and received a LPN degree from Kirkwood.  Faye worked as a nurse for the Views and West Ridge Care Center for several years.  On July 20, 1997 she married Jeffrey Gillespie in his mother’s back yard in Center Point.  Faye enjoyed walking her dogs, looking at Cavachon websites and playing slots on the computer.  She played pool and golf in her younger years and was given the nickname “Par” Faye.  She was a fan of the Chicago Bears and of Walter Peyton, and of NASCAR driver Rusty Wallace.  Faye loved being with her family and will be missed by everyone who knew and loved her. James Mantel Gillespie , Bowling Green, Ohio b May 11, 1951. Died Dec 10, 2022. Passed away  in his home surrounded by his family. Jim was born to Ike and Shirley Gillespie in Bowling Green, Ohio. After graduating from Otsego High School in 1969, he went on to become an iron worker,  then later started his own painting and carpentry business, where he expressed his true passion.

In 1975, Jim met the love of his life, Gertrud, at taco night at Mad Anthony’s in Waterville, Ohio. Jim and Gertrud married in 1980 and had three children, Kate (Alex) Laverde, Zach, and Molly (John) Lashaway.

In 2009, Jim retired and moved to northern Michigan, where he enjoyed his time fishing, vacationing in Canada, gardening, reading, and spending time with his family. Jim will be remembered for his great sense of humor and endearing stubbornness. He also took pride in his yard and could be found mowing his lawn while enjoying an Old Mil. He loved spending time with his five grandchildren, Quinn, Sophie, Jude, Mateo, and Noah… sharing his favorite past times, wisdom, and love of sweets with them. Along with his wife, children and grandchildren, Jim is survived by his loving siblings, Bill (Galena) Gillespie, Jeannie (Don) Genson, and Anne (Dale) Limes, as well as an abundance of lifelong friends.

Jane Marie Gillespie, 85, passed peacefully at Bright Kavanagh on Tuesday, November 16, 2021. Visitation was from 10 a.m. until the service at 11:30 a.m. Friday, November 19, 2021 at Immanuel United Methodist Church, 2900 49th Street, Des Moines, IA 50310.  A luncheon at the church  followed the service for those who want to attend. Burial will be at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.

Jane was born on July 4, 1936 in Marshalltown, Iowa to Clarence and Genevieve Johnson. The middle child and the only daughter, Jane learned early how to take care of an older brother, Larry and a younger one, Jim. After Jane’s father passed in California at an early age, the family moved back to Marshalltown where Jane played the clarinet in the band, worked in a grocery store and graduated from high school. Jane moved to Des Moines and worked as a secretary for Pete Marwick, Mitchell & Co. She met Marlyn Gillespie, the love of her life, and they married in 1965 and had two children. Jane loved her family, friends, volunteering, her church family, and she never met a stranger. Over 20 years of service at Iowa Methodist Hospital’s gift shop and helping with Valley band uniforms were at the top of her list. Jane treasured her grandchildren, Emily and Mitchell. Jane is survived by her daughter, Kim (Rich) Willis; son, Jeff (Janet) Gillespie; grandchildren, Emily (Isaac) Westergaard and Mitchell; and sister-in-law, Charlene Johnson. She was proceeded in death by her husband, parents, and brothers.

Jean Gillespie (Moss) died March 16, 2012 at the Winterset Care Center South. She was 90 years old. Funeral services were held 11 a.m., Monday, March 19 at the First United Presbyterian Church in Winterset. A visitation was from 1 to 6 p.m., Sunday, March 18 at Ochiltree Funeral Service, with family present to receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Burial was in the Winterset Cemetery, Winterset.
Jean Moss was born September 16, 1921 in San Francisco, California, the daughter of Jasper and Mary (Clauser) Moss. Jean grew up in Morgan Hill, California and attended San Jose State where she received her B.A. in Physical Education. She taught in secondary education for several years before meeting the love of her life, Thomas Leo Gillespie, Jr., an Iowa farm boy stationed in California. The couple met at a dance and ultimately married on December 29, 1945 in Los Gatos, CA. Somehow Leo convinced her to move back to Winterset where the couple raised their family and lived the remainder of their lives.

Jean was an active member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Winterset and PEO. She also was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Lions Club, Thursday Guild, and enjoyed playing cards in several bridge groups. Jean is survived by her children, Thomas M. Gillespie of Cedar Rapids; Mary E. Youngkin of Salt Lake City, UT; Daniel F. Gillespie and his wife, Marcy of Glen Allen, VA; and two grandchildren, Devin and Logan Gillespie both of Richmond, VA. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, in June of 2000; and her siblings, Katherine, Vera, Bess and Stanton.

Jerry Gillespie, Sr., 42, passed away Tuesday, October 29, 2013 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. He was born January 23, 1971 in Des Moines, the son of Karen and Larry Gillespie, Sr.
Jerry enjoyed riding motorcycles and living life in the fast lane. He was a family man and loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Jerry is survived by his children, Jerry Gillespie, Jr. and Jessica Gillespie; grandchildren, Destinee, Natalie and Emalie; mother, Karen; and his brothers, Larry and Frank Gillespie. He was preceded in death by his father. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines. The family received visitors Friday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Kathleen R Gillespie “Kate” 90, died on May 21, 2010 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. She was born in Dubuque on March 5, 1920. She had moved to the Des Moines area in 1945 and worked in the office of North High School. Graveside Services was at 10 a.m., Tuesday, May 25, 2010 at Glendale Cemetery. Visitation was 6 to 8 p.m., Monday at Iles Funeral Homes- Westover Chapel.

She will be missed by her husband, Larry of Johnston; sons, James Allen (Jerilyn) of Dexter, IA and Marty Gillespie (Nancy) of Houston, TX; daughter, Shelley Fisher (Bill) of Johnston; eight grandchildren, Marshall, Jeffery, Robert, Brock, Tate, Amanda, Shannon and Kari and seven great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Jack Allen in 1962, her parents and 4 brothers.

Larry D Gillespie.  It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Larry D. Gillespie of Sidney, Iowa, born in Omaha, Nebraska, who passed away on May 28, 2024, at the age of 72, He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Dean J. Gillespie and Doris June Gillespie (Walker); and his wife Mary of Sidney, IA. Graveside service May 31st at Sidney Cemetery.

Lawrence Larry” Vinton Gillespie, 77, of Nevada, passed away Thursday, October 18, 2012, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.  Lawrence was born December 16, 1934, in Gettysburg, South Dakota to Lloyd and Mary Catherine (Agan) Gillespie. He graduated from Chariton High School in 1955 and was united in marriage Doreen Faye McCleary on July 27, 1968, in Ankeny. Lawrence worked at Ankeny Ford from 1960-1977, then went to work for Ron Willey Ford for ten years as the parts manager. He had been a resident of the Iowa Veterans Home for 22 years and was instrumental in starting the bird sanctuary and procuring a machine that residents can use to make custom embossed greeting cards. Lawrence was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Nevada and had been a Cub Scout Leader and Assistant Scout Master. Lawrence enjoyed fishing, leather and woodworking, gardening, traveling and the annual family reunions.  Lawrence is survived by his wife, Doreen Faye of Nevada, Iowa; his sons, Eric Jay (Cathy) Gillespie of Urbandale, Iowa and David Jon Gillespie of Austin, TX; and his sister, Marjorie (Kenneth) Gookin of Story City, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation was held 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, October 22, 2012, at Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada. Funeral service was held 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 23, 2012, at the First United Methodist Church in Nevada. Burial will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Greenwood Friends Cemetery in Ankeny with military honors provided by the Ankeny American Legion Post #42 and the United States Army Honor Guard.
