Elsie Lenora (Talley) Gillespie was born on March 12, 1930, in Darnestown, Maryland where she grew up. She was the tenth of twelve children born to the late Richard Maurice Talley and late Laura Ethel (Lee) Talley. Her grandparents, Richard E. Lee and Susan Mariah (Baker) Lee were former slaves. On Sunday, December 12, 2021, God called her home at the age of 91 years old.
Elsie was a country girl. She worked on the family farm which had pigs, a pig pen, cows, a cow barn, a hen house, chickens, a meat/smoke house, a vegetable garden, a peach tree and an outhouse. Her responsibilities included housekeeping, providing care to her grandmother, Susan Mariah (Baker) Lee, and helping her mother with the chickens. Elsie attended Quince Orchard Elementary School in Darnestown, MD, and Lincoln High School in Rockville, MD. She transferred to Dunbar High School located in Washington, D.C. in the tenth grade and graduated in 1949.
Elsie worked several positions as an adult from 1949 to 1966 as a housekeeper, beautician, and a waitress. In 1966, Elsie started working at the U.S. Postal Service at the age of thirty-six years old. She remained a faithful, hard working employee for 30 years until she retired. She was a wonderful mother and great provider. During her tenure at the U.S. Postal Service she purchased a single family home in Washington, D.C., which was a life-long goal for her. Elsie did not care about material things, i.e. fancy cars or clothes. She did not like a lot of fuss over her. What she enjoyed the most was just being with her family. It brought her great joy!
Elsie married the late Lucious Gillespie, Jr. and from this union three children were born: (1) Iantha (Gillespie) Gilmore (Willie), (2) Vicki (Gillespie) Graham, and (3) Stanley Gillespie. She later met Chesterfield Crews, Sr. and from this union four children were born: (4) Chesterfield Crews, Jr. (Dorothy), (5) Katrina Crews-Noble (Timothy), (6) Marzina (Crews) Joegriner (Paul), and (7) Tracie (Crews) Bowers (Jessie). Elsie is survived by her seven children, and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nephews, nieces, family and friends.
Elsie was preceded in death by ten of her twelve siblings: (1) Anderson Eugene Talley, (2) Herman Roscoe Talley, (3) Roland Burnell Talley, (4) Maurice Flemming Talley, (5) Willard Windell Talley, Sr., (6) Arthur Woodrow Talley, Sr., (7) Upton Leonard Talley, Sr., (8) Clifton Lee Talley, (9) Mae Lucille (Talley) Peterson, and (10) Anna Alvergie (Talley) Lewis. She is survived by one sister, Agnes Bernice (Talley) Kohler, who lives in Washington state.
Elsie will be cherished and missed by her family. She leaves all of us with fond memories that will remain in our hearts forever. She led a glorious life here on earth for 91 years and her family is very thankful for the time we had with her. Go in peace, mom! We love you dearly! A Celebration of Life Service was held at Snowden Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 29, 2021.
