Donald Allen Gillespie, born Sept 22, 1932, of Media, PA and a long time resident of center city Philadelphia, peacefully passed away on August 24, 2019, age 86, at Paoli Hospital from complications of heart and kidney failure. Born in Twin Oaks, Upper Chichester Township, PA, he was the beloved partner of Michael K. Liller who had predeceased him. He was the beloved son of the late Alexander L. Gillespie and Dorothy V. (nee Bothell). As one of five sons, he was the brother of Clarence J, and Edward W. of Harrington, Delaware and was predeceased by Robert and Alex.
Don was a graduate of Media High School. Following graduation, he worked at the General Steel Castings Corporation in Eddystone, PA before joining the United States Marine Corps in 1952 serving as a small arms proof technician. He served at Camp Le Jeune, North Carolina, and also in the “Birdcage” which contained nuclear warheads before being honorably discharged in 1956. He worked at General Electric as a Contract Administrator until his retirement. After retirement, Don was able to expand on his love of travelling and photography. He travelled to all seven continents including Antarctica. Don’s wishes were to have a graveside service and it was held at the Edgewood Memorial Park in Glen Mills, PA on September 4, 2019 at 11:00 A.M.
Donald James Gillespie passed away on February 1, 2020, surrounded by family and friends. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend. Don grew up in Olney and attended St. Helena grade school and Cardinal Dougherty high school. Upon graduation from high school in 1967, Don entered the US Marine Corps — in what would become a defining moment in his life. Don arrived in Vietnam in February 1968 near the start of the epic Battle of Khe Sanh. Two regiments of marines were badly outnumbered by soldiers from the North Vietnamese People’s Army of Vietnam. The Marines, with the help of America’s air support, maintained the base at Khe Sanh for 5 months. Over 1,500 Americans perished in the siege and another 7,600 were injured. Don was wounded during the battle and spent many months recovering in the hospital. He returned to danger in Vietnam upon completion of his initial 12-month deployment to rejoin his Marine comrades there. He was the recipient of two Purple Hearts and remained a proud Marine his entire life.
After returning from the war, Don spent his career in law enforcement. He joined the Philadelphia Police Department in 1974. He worked for the Philadelphia Police Department for 25 years, initially in West Philadelphia’s 16th District and then in police transit. He was a K-9 officer and also worked in plainclothes. Later, he became a detective and worked in the sex crimes unit. He was a dedicated champion for abused women and children and received many awards and commendations. After retiring from the Philadelphia Police Department, Don went to work for the state of Pennsylvania where he continued his detective work investigating sex offenders. He was the first detective hired by the state to enforce Megan’s Law. He retired in May 2015 after 16 years with the state.
Don had a lifelong love of baseball and coached for over 20 years for the Chestnut Hill Fathers Club. He enjoyed traveling and riding his Harley once the weather warmed up. Don was a strong man with a kind, gentle spirit. He was known for his generosity and quick wit. He adored his grandchildren. He will continue to be cherished by those who loved him. He is survived by his loving wife Judy Feighery, his four children Donald Gillespie (Lori), Jennifer Vogel (Adam), Matthew Gillespie and Benjamin Gillespie, five grandchildren and five step children. Squirrel Hill psychiatrist, Mary Patrice Gillespie, was credited with helping patients during their most desperate times. A former patient phoned Dr. Gillespie during the last days of her life to tell her that she had saved his life, said her husband, Jim Gillespie.
Dr. Gillespie, who was called “Patty,” died Aug. 25 after a battle with ovarian cancer. She was 68. Mary Patrice Williams was born in Akron, Ohio, and pursued an education degree and certification as a dental hygienist from Ohio State University in 1972. She went on to earn a master’s degree in public health at Tulane University in 1975 and began teaching dental hygiene at Loyola University, where she met her future husband. The two married in June 1979.
She earned her medical degree at Tulane University School of Medicine in 1980, when she and her husband decided they wanted to move closer to their families as their own grew. “We had our daughter Sarah by that time, and we were both from the North and wanted to move closer to home,” he recalled.
Dr. Gillespie interviewed at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic for a residency in child and adolescent psychiatry and was offered a position. What was a temporary, four-year plan developed into a lifelong love of the Pittsburgh area, Mr. Gillespie said.
Dr. Gillespie worked briefly in Mercer and Beaver counties at mental health programs before she found her niche at the Wexford and Sewickley offices of Heritage Valley Staunton Clinic, where she worked for about 25 years.
Her deteriorating health forced Dr. Gillespie to retire three years ago, but it didn’t stop her from continuing to help people. In addition to her husband, Dr. Gillespie is survived by three daughters, Sarah Gillespie of Highland Park, Rebecca Gillespie of Squirrel Hill and Liz Lang of Washington, D.C.; five sisters, Becky Talbott of Galion, Ohio, Marty Radtke of Columbus, Ohio, Sally McKechnie of Needham, Mass., Libby Bickley of Columbus, Ohio, and Lorrie Hubert, of Indianapolis; and five grandchildren. A memorial service was held Tuesday. Obit from Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Sept 11, 2018.
