Frederick Gillespie, Erie, PA
Frederick Gillespie, Erie, PA

Frederick S. Gillespie, On March 1, 2023, Frederick S. Gillespie, 81, went home to be with the Lord surrounded by his family. Heaven gained a kind, compassionate soul, and this side of Heaven will never be the same. He was born in Erie, PA on November 24, 1941, the son of the late Sherman L. and Doris (Stolz) Gillespie, and his love of starting a conversation and the gift of telling stories, time and time again, will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
After graduating Academy High School, Frederick enlisted in the United States Air Force and served for four years and was stationed in both in Washington, D.C. and Alaska. Shortly after returning from serving his country, Fred met the love of his life. In fact, he saw her from across a room while she was working at Erie Infants Home. Only after four months of meeting, Fred married his love, Karen, and on March 25, Fred and Karen would have been married for 58 happy years. Their legacy of love set the standard very high for their children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.

Although he started his career at GE, Fred chose to join the family business at Gillespie Machine and Tool and remained there as the president and, later, owner until he retired. No matter if in Florida, where he and his bride became snowbirds, or in Pennsylvania, Fred always served his community. He was an avid bowler and earned the title of “Rolo,” and as a softball player, he was known as “King of the Court.” Many fond memories were created when Fred coached Little League for 11 years, and he was still called “coach” by many. In his spare time, he loved watching sports, and he was a very loyal Cleveland Browns fan. However, his favorite athletes to celebrate were his own children and later his grandsons, no matter how far MeMa and Papa had to travel. The most cherished cheer was, “Come on, Pal, be relentless!”

Frederick is survived by his loving wife, Karen, and his three children, Cindy (Stephen) Rewers, Frederick C. Gillespie (Julie) and Nathan Gillespie who will daily attempt to spread his kindness and “gift of gab.” He was lovingly referred to as “Papa” by his grandchildren Andrew Rubright (Colleen), Amanda Stoneback (Steven), Zachariah Gillespie (Tatyana), Joshua Gillespie (Hannah), and Frederick N. Gillespie (Sarah). His greatgrandchildren lovingly referred to him as “Big Papa,” and Landon, Brayden, Arie, Michael and Cate will miss you so very much. Frederick is survived by his two sisters, Linda (John) Vargo and Ann (Karl) Wollman, and he will also be missed by family members and dear friends, both in PA and in FL.
Friends and family paid their respects on Sunday, March 5, 2023, at Brugger Funeral Home located at 1595 West 38th Street, Erie, PA 16508 from 12p.m. until the time of a service at 4 p.m. with Pastor Edward Huntley officiating.

Squirrel Hill psychiatrist, Mary Patrice Gillespie, was credited with helping patients during their most desperate times. A former patient phoned Dr. Gillespie during the last days of her life to tell her that she had saved his life, said her husband, Jim Gillespie.

Dr. Gillespie, who was called “Patty,” died Aug. 25, 2018 after a battle with ovarian cancer. She was 68. Mary Patrice Williams was born in Akron, Ohio, and pursued an education degree and certification as a dental hygienist from Ohio State University in 1972. She went on to earn a master’s degree in public health at Tulane University in 1975 and began teaching dental hygiene at Loyola University, where she met her future husband.  The two married in June 1979.

She earned her medical degree at Tulane University School of Medicine in 1980, when she and her husband decided they wanted to move closer to their families as their own grew. “We had our daughter Sarah by that time, and we were both from the North and wanted to move closer to home,” he recalled. Dr. Gillespie interviewed at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic for a residency in child and adolescent psychiatry and was offered a position. What was a temporary, four-year plan developed into a lifelong love of the Pittsburgh area, Mr. Gillespie said. Dr. Gillespie worked briefly in Mercer and Beaver counties at mental health programs before she found her niche at the Wexford and Sewickley offices of Heritage Valley Staunton Clinic, where she worked for about 25 years.

Her deteriorating health forced Dr. Gillespie to retire three years ago, but it didn’t stop her from continuing to help people. In addition to her husband, Dr. Gillespie is survived by three daughters, Sarah Gillespie of Highland Park, Rebecca Gillespie of Squirrel Hill and Liz Lang of Washington, D.C.; five sisters, Becky Talbott of Galion, Ohio, Marty Radtke of Columbus, Ohio, Sally McKechnie of Needham, Mass., Libby Bickley of Columbus, Ohio, and Lorrie Hubert, of Indianapolis; and five grandchildren. A memorial service was held Tuesday. Obit from Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Sept 11, 2018.

Beryl Gillespie Slocum Powell ObituaryBeryl Gillespie Slocum POWELL, born Oct 29, 1942, died peacefully on February 7, 2025, at St. Luke’s hospital in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, after a prolonged illness. She was 82 years old.

Beryl was the second of three children born to John Jermain Slocum, Sr., a diplomat, scholar, and U.S. Army Air Corps officer, and Eileen Gillespie Slocum, a prominent socialite and leader in the Republican Party. She was descended from such notable figures as Myles Standish, the Captain of the Mayflower and military leader of the Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts; Roger Williams, founder of the State of Rhode Island; Major General Lawrence Lewis Gillespie, a Medal of Honor recipient from the U.S. Civil War; Col. Herbert J. Slocum, who commanded the 13th Cavalry Regiment against Pancho Villa; and the Brown family, which founded Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.

Beryl lived abroad with her family during her early years.  Her father was a Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Information Agency, part of the State Department. The family lived in Frankfurt and Bad Godesberg, Germany; Brussels, Belgium; and Cairo, Egypt. She attended Miss Hewitt’s Classes in New York City (now the Hewitt School) and The Potomac School in McLean, Virginia. She became an avid bibliophile at the urging of her father, and wrote four novels (including Mirror, Mirror and Grief), the first of which was published when she was seventeen years old.

Beryl was named “Debutante of the Year” in New York City in 1960, and went on to attend Radcliffe College (now part of Harvard University), from which she graduated with a degree in English Literature. During her college years she was hired by President John F. Kennedy to work at the White House Bureau of the Budget (now the OMB), and she also worked for Lieutenant General Alva R. Fitch, a Bataan Death March survivor, at the Defense Intelligence Agency in the Pentagon.

In 1967, Beryl returned to New York City where she met Adam Clayton Powell, III, the son of Congressman Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. and the jazz pianist Hazel Scott. The two were married in May, 1969, at the Washington National Cathedral. They lived in New York City for sixteen years and raised their two children there. Beryl worked at the New York Public Library, and at three publishing companies, where she edited The Journal of Differential Equations, among others.

In the mid-1980s, Beryl and her younger son moved to Newport, Rhode Island to be closer to her extended family. While living there, she worked as a paralegal at a local law firm, and as the head of finance at an automotive and industrial supplier. She also trained as a nurse, and assisted with her parents’ medical care after they fell ill in their later years. After her parents’ passing she traveled extensively, to locations such as China, India, Turkey, and numerous African countries.

Beryl completed her M.A. in 2007, and her Ph.D. in 2018, both at Salve Regina University in Newport. She then moved to the Midwest to live with her younger son and his family, and in 2022, moved with them to Eastern Pennsylvania.

Beryl is survived by her sons (former) Army Major Sherman Scott Powell, Adam C. Powell, IV, Ph.D., his wife Colleen Richards Powell; by her sister, Marguerite Leckrone, and her grandchildren William, Katherine and Hannah. She is predeceased by her parents and by her brother John J. Slocum, Jr.

A viewing was held Sunday, February 16, from 2-3:00 pm at the Schmidt Funeral Home, 407 Belvidere St, Nazareth, PA 18064. A funeral service  followed at 3:00 pm in the funeral home.
