Judith A BARONE 74, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2022. She was born in Providence, Rhode Island on July 8, 1947, to the late Robert and Joan (Clement) Gillespie. She was raised on Block Island, where her parents made their home. After moving to the mainland, she graduated from Cranston High School West in 1965.
She was the beloved wife of Stephen Barone for 29 years, who survives her. Judi was the loving mother of Joy Maxwell, Kerri Barone, and Stephen Barone. Cherished grandmother of William Stone, Lizzy Cameron, Arianna Maxwell, Aidan Maxwell, Hannah Hill, Drew Hill, Sophia Montrond, and Samuel Barone and great grandmother to Kassandra Cameron, all of whom survive her.
Judi also leaves her sisters Jean Cipriano (Vincent), Jacqueline Phillips (Ted) Jayne Saccoccia (John) and her brother Robert Gillespie all of whom survive her.

Alina Gillespie, 91, died peacefully at home on Sunday, June 21, 2026, with her loving daughters and caregivers by her side. Born in Uzanie, Poland on March 7, 1935, Alina was the only child and daughter of Jan (John) Bielecki and Bronislawa (Blanche) Brodecka. Their lives were forever shattered by World War II, when the Nazis invaded their town and transported them to Germany to work in forced labor camps and munition factories. After six long years, including being in displaced persons camps, she and her parents were able emigrate to the United States, where Alina’s life began again at the age of 14. Their family first settled in Dorchester MA, where Alina graduated from the Jeremiah E. Burke High School, supported by her new friends who helped her to learn English in exchange for her math and Latin tutoring. She later completed coursework at Boston College, where she developed a penchant for accounting, and applied these skills to her job of several years at the telephone company in downtown Boston.
Through mutual friends, Alina met her late husband, Clifford Gillespie. After marrying in 1959, they moved together to Proctor Academy, a small residential boarding school in Andover, NH, where Cliff was a teacher and coach. There, they had their two daughters, Dede and Susie, while serving as dorm parents and mentors to the young adolescents in their dormitory, forging life-long friendships with many of them. After five years at Proctor, the family relocated to St. Paul’s School in Concord, NH, where they lived for over 50 years. Before her retirement in the late 1990’s, Alina worked as the corporate accounting supervisor at Blue Cross/Blue Shield in Concord. She initially joined the company to earn extra funds to support her many relatives living in Poland during the difficult communist period, sending care packages of clothing, shoes, and other essentials to them.
In addition to her own career, Alina was a constant and capable companion and supporter of her husband, Cliff, in all of his academic and athletic pursuits as teacher, coach, and administrator at St. Paul’s School. They both placed a very high value on education and a strong work ethic, while always being mindful of those needing guidance or a helping hand.
During sabbaticals, Alina and Cliff enjoyed overseas travel to several European countries including Austria, England, Greece, Switzerland and her native Poland. They also toured Asia extensively while representing St. Paul’s when Cliff was headmaster. Their final year at the School was a pivotal and particularly rewarding time in their lives and careers. They fostered a supportive and strong community among students, faculty, parents, and trustees during a period of transition on campus. Outside of her family, Alina had a love of vegetable and flower gardening and landscaping. During retirement, she and Cliff spent countless hours cultivating the land around their Dunbarton, NH home as well as at their local St. John’s Episcopal Church. They both served on the vestry there, under the Reverend Kelly Clark, former headmaster at St. Paul’s School, with Mom as treasurer. In 2017, after many wonderful decades in their NH community, Alina and Cliff moved to Rhode Island to be closer to their daughters and for greater family care of Cliff until his passing in 2021. Alina leaves her cherished daughters, Dede Moubayed, her husband, Peter, and their son, Zander, of Pawtucket, Rhode Island and Delray Beach, Florida; and Susie Gillespie, of Providence, Rhode Island; as well as her brother-in-law, Robert Gillespie, of Northfield, New Hampshire and sister-in-law, Donna Gillespie, of Dover-Foxcroft, Maine; and her many nieces and nephews in Maine and relatives in Poland.

Clifford J. Gillespie, Jr. Lifelong Educator and Coach RUMFORD, RI – Clifford J. Gillespie, Jr., 88, died peacefully at home on Sunday, February 21, 2021, surrounded by his loving family and caregivers after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. Born in Revere, Massachusetts on December 7, 1932, to Clifford J. Gillespie, Sr. and Viola (Sylvester) Gillespie, he was the second of five children. He graduated from Weymouth High School in 1950 where he was a star right guard in football and won Division I State Championships with his team. The first of his family to attend college, he went to Tufts University where he was co-captain of the freshman football team before enlisting in the Air Force in 1951. He completed jet school in Las Vegas and was the youngest to achieve the rank of staff sergeant. Under the G.I. bill, he enrolled at the University of New Hampshire and majored in chemistry, graduating cum laude in 1959, and completed his master’s degree in science teaching in 1964. While at UNH, he played varsity football, and also two years of semi-pro football, before being introduced to the game of lacrosse by the legendary coach, A. Barr “Whoops”’ Snively. Whoops was his greatest mentor and role model and instilled in Cliff a true love of the game. Cliff received honorable mention for the All-American Intercollegiate Lacrosse Team while playing at UNH. In1959, Cliff moved to Proctor Academy in Andover, NH, with his new bride, Alina, where he taught math and science, coached, and was dormitory head. He led the varsity football and junior varsity hockey teams at the school before starting the lacrosse program, at first scrounging for sticks, helmets and other equipment, before the sport became officially recognized there. Following his five years at Proctor, he joined the faculty at St. Paul’s School in Concord, NH, with his young family, where he served as a science teacher, then Chair of the Science Department, later Dean of Students, and ultimately Interim Headmaster before retiring from the school. During his tenure at SPS, Cliff gained a reputation as a dedicated and disciplined teacher and mentor. He was instrumental in launching a new science curriculum at the school, helping to integrate computers into the classroom, and designing the Lindsay Center for Math and Science on campus. He also taught organic chemistry as part of the Advanced Studies Program for high school students during summers. He received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics from the National Science Foundation as well as the Certificate of Excellence from the Whitehouse Commission of Presidential Scholars for his teaching and contribution to the field of education. While on sabbatical, Cliff and Alina enjoyed travel to several European countries including Austria, England, Greece, Poland, and Switzerland. They also toured Asia extensively while representing St. Paul’s when he was headmaster. In 1973, Cliff assumed the reins of the SPS lacrosse team and crafted his unique brand of coaching, which led to five consecutive league championships. He inspired his team to three straight undefeated seasons in 1980-1982 with a string of forty consecutive wins. He was known for his strict conditioning regimen including running “The Loop,” which many will remember, and for his philosophy of lacrosse as a way of life—requiring character, teamwork, loyalty, and desire—which he instilled in his players. Among other honors, he was named the Independent School League’s Coach of the Year four times; voted the Independent School Lacrosse Association’s Man of the Year in 1993; and, in 1994, became the first ever recipient of the Carroll Jr. Exemplary Coach of Year Award from the US Lacrosse Association. Later, he was inducted into the New England Hall of Fame for lacrosse where there is a bronze statue bearing his name. Affectionately nicknamed “The Rock,” Cliff had a commanding presence but compassionate core and always led by example, never expecting more from his players than he asked of himself. In addition to his vocational passions, Cliff embraced other activities beyond the classroom and sports fields, earning a second-degree black belt in karate; restoring antiques bought with family at auctions throughout New Hampshire; studying ceramics under the renowned potter, Peter Sabin, of Warner; and crafting stone walls at their Dunbarton cape house. During retirement, Cliff and Alina joined St. John’s Episcopal Church in Dunbarton serving in the vestry under the Reverend Kelly Clark, former headmaster at St. Paul’s School. Cliff was also a member of the Board of Trustees of The Governor’s Academy in Byfield, MA for 10 years, served on the Board of Directors of NH Child and Family Services for 3 years, and was a Dunbarton town representative on the School Superintendent search committee. To honor of his life-long commitment to education, the Clifford J. Gillespie Medal was established by trustees at St. Paul’s in 1997 in recognition of Cliff’s 33 years of dedicated service to the School as teacher, coach, and Interim Rector. It is awarded each year to the student who best embodies the qualities that characterized his career: honesty, integrity, and an eagerness to undertake the tasks, great and small, that make the School a better place. The Anderson-Gillespie Lacrosse Trophy was also established at Governor’s Academy in 1991 by Peter Bragdon, then headmaster and a long-time friend, to honor Cliff’s coaching success and his personal devotion to the game of lacrosse. For Cliff, his most prized possession was his iconic red Ford pickup truck presented to him by the SPS Board of Trustees upon his retirement. He leaves his beloved wife, Alina, of 63 years, of Rumford, Rhode Island; his cherished daughters: Dede Moubayed, her husband, Peter, and their son and Cliff’s treasured grandson, Zander, of Rumford, Rhode Island, and Susie Gillespie, of Providence, Rhode Island; his brother, Robert Gillespie, and his wife, Debbie Wheeler, of Northfield, New Hampshire; his sister-in-law, Donna Gillespie, of Mount Dora, Florida; his brother-in-law, Malcolm Wiley, of Biddeford, Maine; and his many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his eldest brother, Wesley Gillespie, and his wife, Edna; his brother, John Gillespie; his sister, Wilma Wiley; and his dear friend, Bruce Van Ness.

Evelyn F Gillespie of Hampton died after a brief illness Sunday, December 4, 2011 in Exeter Hospital. Daughter of John and Lillian Forbes, Ms Gillespie served for many years in several management capacities for the hotel industry.
During her life, Ms Gillespie worked as General Manager at the Carpenter Hotel in Manchester. The Sheraton Wayfarer Motor Inn in Bedford, The Meadowbrook Motor Inn in Portsmouth, and the Sheratorn Airport Inn in Warwick, Rhode Island.
She served as President of The Rhode Island Hotel/Motel Association, the Warwick Chamber of Commerce, The Kent County Warwick R. I. Professional Business Women’s Association, and the New England Innkeepers Association.
Ms Gillespie is survived by her daughter, Priscilla Cuher and her husband Frank of Nahant, Massachusetts, and Key West, Florida; her son John ‘Jack’ Gillespie, Jr of Salem, Mass; four grandchildren: Douglas, Amy, Timothy and Terrence Cuher, and 8 great-grandchildren.

She was the daughter of Lawrence Lewis Gillespie, a banker, and Irene Muriel Sherman Gillespie, a member of a family long associated with Newport and New York society. Her childhood unfolded within an environment shaped by financial security, established social expectations, and close family ties to Rhode Island. She was educated in New York City at Miss Hewitt’s Classes, a private school known for its academic rigor and emphasis on discipline and precision. Her education prepared her for a public life that would later combine social responsibility, political involvement, and stewardship of family legacy.
As a young woman, she moved within prominent social circles and was for a time engaged to John Jacob Astor VI. The engagement was later ended. On April 27, 1940, she married John Jermain Slocum. Her husband pursued a career in government service and later became known for his work as a collector and scholar. During the early years of their marriage, they lived both in the United States and abroad in connection with his professional assignments.
In 1961, Eileen Slocum acquired from her aunt the family residence on Bellevue Avenue in Newport, Rhode Island, which became her principal home. There she assembled and maintained a significant collection of early American art, furniture, and family portraits. Her stewardship of the house reflected a deliberate commitment to continuity, preservation, and historical integrity at a time when many such properties were being dispersed or altered.
After her husband’s retirement from public service in 1970, she became increasingly active in Republican politics. She served as a delegate from Rhode Island to the Republican National Convention in 1972 and was involved for many years in party leadership and fundraising at the state and national levels. Her Newport home became a frequent setting for political gatherings, and she was regarded as an influential figure within Rhode Island Republican circles, particularly among women active in party organization. Eileen Gillespie Slocum died on July 27, 2008, in Newport, Newport County, Rhode Island, at the age of ninety-two. She was buried at Island Cemetery in Newport, Newport County, Rhode Island.
