- Frank E Leveridge, son, July 29, 1890 died May 4, 1917 in World War I overseas. See his war story under Coe Hill Soldiers.
First four children above born in Hockering, near Norwich, in Norfolk, ENGLAND. David arrived in Canada in 1882 and spent a year trying to find a place to live in Hastings County. His wife Anna arrived with their four children in 1883. After a time in Millbridge, the family made a winter move to a log shanty on 100 acres in the bush further north. Coe Hill became their main shopping and social area. They raised a family of eight children on their farm.
Katherine Leveridge married C Tivy (d 1908) , and Anna’s grandson, Louis Tivy wrote the book, Your Loving Anna. He was born on Anna and David’s farm. His book provides a copy of some of the letters that Anna sent to her family in England about their early pioneering efforts.Their little farm in Wollaston Twp over time did prosper, and a much better house was build.
Anna’s two sisters came to Canada. Mary and her family made a home in Trenton. Gertie came to Coe Hill to live with the Leveridges and found a husband in Coe Hill, an immigrant from a good family in England. Harry Boothby and Gertie opened a store in the village and had a good life together.
David and Anna moved to Belleville when he got a job there in later years. The Leveridge farm was later taken over by their son, Frank, who married Mary Tivy, and then went off to war. The farm remained in the family, but a spot where nobody lived for any great length of time. It has since disappeared with the passing of time. I remember walking the fields and enjoying this lovely, deserted spot in the hills of North Hastings.
Anna’s daughter, Gertie, married into the Hewton family. When she became a widow , she first moved to Trenton, then to a nearby village of Carrying Place. David and Anna spent their latter years with her. Katy married Charles Tivy, but lost her husband when their children were small. She would later marry M. J. Wilson. Florence chose a local blacksmith, Joseph Hawthorne , as her partner for life. Lily stayed single, as did Edward.
Edward and Arthur went to Northern Ontario, settling near Emo, along the Rainy River west of Fort Francis. Johnnie later followed them after he returned from the war and is buried in Devlin Cemetery. Johnnie had married Mary Agnes Tivy (1880-.1936) Edward is also buried with them in Devlin Cemetery.
David and Ann rest in Carrying Place Cemetery, on the rise of a hill overlooking the beautiful waters of the Bay of Quinte, or westward of the corner of lake Ontario known as Wellers’s Bay
