BAMFORD, James Arthur 1942 – 2022
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jim on Monday, June 6th, with his wife and children by his side. Born to the late Madge and Howard Bamford on April 9, 1942 in Toronto, Ontario. Jim grew up in Leaside, the third generation to look after the family business, “Bamford’s Produce Company” in Toronto, Ontario. Son Stephen continues the family legacy today, as the fourth generation. Jim was predeceased by his sister, Barbara Bamford.
Jim leaves behind his wife, Jeffrey Sharon Bamford (nee Legate), daughter, Patti Bamford, son, James Stephen Bamford (wife Robyn) and three grandchildren, Mackenzie, Tyson and James, as well as many loving in-laws, “outlaws”, nieces and nephews and their families. Also important to Jim were his hunting and fishing friends – especially his lifelong friend, Barry Austin (wife Rachelle).
Jim was a pillar in Toronto business, with a strong love of time with family and enjoying the outdoors. He valued his time hunting and fishing throughout Ontario and spent the much of the last 22 years at “the Ranch” outside of Coe Hill, Ontario. Jim worked with the Ministry of Natural Resources as an advisor and also volunteered as a member of Metro East Anglers, promoting fish hatcheries through Toronto, including his own on Parkview Golf Course through the 90’s. He had a love of sharing his passion for the outdoors, hosting fishing days for children, and raising fish in tanks at a local school to stock nearby lakes.
The family received friends at the Humphrey Funeral Home A.W. Miles – Newbigging Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville) on Tuesday, June 14th from 1:00 – 3:00 and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. A service was held on Wednesday, June 15th at 11:00 a.m. for family and friends.

BANDY, Roy Nelson 1917 – March 25, 1986
Roy and Mildred Bandy lived on a very tidy lot on the hillside of Station Street on the east side, before a group of houses just before the railroad tracks, where the Town Office now sits. He was a caretaker of the Gospel Church, and stoked that wood stove many cold mornings in winter so folk arriving later could have warmth for a service. He also was a barber and cut hair for the men of the village. They had beautiful flowers in their property. Their son, Eric, played a mouth organ and was very musical.

BATCHELOR, Amos July 5, 1884 – May 9, 1978
Amos, born In Wollaston Twp, was the son of Thomas Batchelor Sr born in England (1830 – 1910) and Mary Maybee (1854-1934). His siblings included: Lucy (1882-1885), Rhoda (1888 -1918), Joseph (1896-1975). Amos married Lenora Brooks on Nov 15, 1915 at Trenton. The couple were in the Coe Hill area by 1921 and had the following children: Ida (b 1916), Effie (b 1918), and Clarence Batchelor (b 1921). Amos’ wife died, and he remarried May Smith. They had a farm with cattle. Amos died age 93 on May 9, 1978 and May died 1980. Burial St Andrew’s United Cemetery, Coe Hill, Ontario
Amos went into dairying for awhile and shipped milk to the Coe Hill Cheese Factory. Amos and his son, Clarence, continued to farm but turned the dairy ino a beef farm, and had at one time about 100 head of cattle on 600 acres of land. Clarence remembered that his mother birthed four children at home with the assistance of a local woman who acted as a midwife. I knew knew both Amos and Clarence as I grew up in Coe Hill.

Margarete M Vader Jan 25, 1932 – Dec 1, 2013. Married June 6, 1951. Loving parents of: Gloria, Grace & Bentley.
Clarence as a child remembered walking two miles and the nine tenth to the Gilroy School from his family’ s farm on Lower Faraday Road. Every morning it was his chore to light the fire of the schoolhouse at 8:00 am, and then back home again at 3:00 pm to do the chores and milk the cows. Clarence was a beef farmer on Lower Faraday Road, having taken over the family farm from his father, Amos when he retired. Clarence would go into the marshes and cut the green marsh hay. He and his wife moved into Coe Hill Village to live on the west side of Station Street across from the United Church. He retired in 1975.

Was Rebecca, wife of John Batchelor, and Mary Maybee, wife of Thomas Sr sisters? Seems likely. If so, they may have also arrived from England with their husbands to settle in Wollaston Twp. Marriage records not yet found.

BATCHLOR, Ellen M unknown – June 19, 1914 NOTE: The spelling of last name changed from burials in Salem Cemetery to St Andrew’s Cemetery records . Did a family member later decide to add the letter ‘e’ , which others followed over the years, or was it done by a clerk in recording a death, as so frequent in earlier records? Did a teacher or educators instruct students how to spell the name as they preferred it and why the spelling of Batchlor died out? Or were there two distinct unrelated family lines, as both spellings are found for those born in the 1840s. It is a location spelling. It was not carried forward in records for later years. No Batchlor or Batchelor burials in St Michael’s Graveyard in Coe Hill.

BATCHLOR, Thomas 1830 England– April 22, 1909
The Batchelor family of Lower Faraday Road were early settlers to the Coe Hill area. Thomas came to work in mining around 1880s. However, the mining in Coe Hill did not last long because of sulpher impurities in the rock. He married Mary Maybee, who lived with her two sons after she became a widow. Thomas Sr and Mary had: Amos Bartchelor b July 1883; Rhoda Batchelor who apparently did not marry b Jan 1888; William Batchelor b Dec 1891 and Joseph Batchelor Sept 1895 to 1975. Amos the oldest son took over the family farm.
Note there is another older Batchelor line in Wollaston Twp, headed by John Batchelor, b 1845, who might be a brother of Thomas. His wife, Rebecca, who is also a widow on 1911 census. Marriage unconfirmed. If so, their children included: Malcomb b Oct 1874; Edith b May 1883; Moses b Aug 1889 and Hermon Batchelor b Oct 1908. There is also a Thomas Batchelor b Aug 1878, but unconfirmed who were his parents.
Unconfirmed yet where Thomas Sr & son William are buried. Most of family are buried in St Andrews United Cemetery, Coe Hill.

CAMPBELL, Leona E Gilroy 1917 – unknown
She & Leo lived through the tornado of August 30, 1947. Wife of Leo Campbell
“It was about 6:00 pm, a queer day from morning on, warm and hazy with high clouds. Leo, Gerald, Glen Beggs and Graydon, who was nine, were trying to get all the grain in the barn before it rained. They had in all but one load which they stopped for supper. Leo drove the horses hitched to a load of grain, onto the barn floor and fed them.
It started to rain as they came in for supper. Graydon and Colleen brought the cows up to the barnyard for milking. There was a little thunderstorm. I was so uptight I just wanted them all in the house with me. We had supper.
After supper, it was raining and still thundering. Colleen and I went and lay down across our bed. Our dog, Rowdy, came in and I told him he could stay with us. He went under the bed and I never saw him again. Then we heard this awful noise. We all ran to the window and looked out. Coming right at us was this frightful dark thing rumbling over and over like black smoke. Trees were way up in the air on the sides of it. Gerald suggested we go the woodshed which had no floor. Colleen and I stood in the doorway. Gerald, Graydon and Glen went into the woodshed. Leo had his hand on the door frame, his arm around my shoulders, and Colleen was between us. Suddenly, it looked like huge hands were crushing the house as it went apart.
When I came to, we were in a field across the lane from the house. Gerald was lying unconscious and Graydon and Glen were walking around. I could not get up as there was a stick about an inch square in my leg. I pulled it out. We realized everything we had was gone. It was suddenly quiet again.
The pîgs, chickens and cows were all about, as there were no buildings left. The cows had gone to the little woods behind the barn, and were all safe, but there were many dead chickens.
Leon went to our car to drive us away, but the binder had hit it and a tire was flat. He went to Gerald’s car. The top was torn off it, but fortunately the keys were in it. He got us all into the car, started it and drove over all the wreckage. We stopped at Fred & Effie Marshall’s. Their house was gone. Marjorie Peacock, who was visiting there, was found by the road, unconscious and with a broken arm. They put her in the car on my lap and on we went. Leo had to drive across the fields from (Harvey and Myrtle)Neal’s farm. The house and all their buildings were gone. Their granddaughter, Myrna Ferguson, was killed. We came out at the home of (Emily) Master’s place where there was a big tree across the road. Somehow they moved it out of the way.
We went on to Dad and Mother Campell’s (Robert and Gertrude). Harvey and Bill O’Brien took Marjorie and me to Bancroft Hospital. They stopped in Coe Hill and sent help for all the others….we later moved to the Ridge to the Dan Henderson farm on Nov 7, 1947. See also report by Majorie Peacock.

Passed quietly into the presence of his Lord, whom he had loved and served for a lifetime, on Sunday evening, August 18, 2019. Precious husband of Faith; Beloved Dad of Paul (Diana), Ruth (Terry), Steve (Yvonne) and David (Teresa). Much loved and fun grandpa of 18 grandchildren and great grandpa of 6. From 1985-2000 he ministered to national workers around the world as President and C.E.O. of Partners International. He then came onto the Pastoral Staff of Richmond Hill Christian Community Church, where he has served up until the present. Grover had a faithful, kind, compassionate heart that he poured out on his beloved family. He touched people around the world, and that passion included his church family. His tender impact has been felt in the lives of thousands. He will be greatly missed. “Well done good and faithful servant, enter into the joy of your Lord”
Grover and Faith and their children would visit his parents Cliff and Vi in Coe Hill over the years. I only saw them a few times in the village. But in later years did met them especially in Newmarket. Faith spoke at women’s Christian gatherings. Both were encouraging and friendly in passing. A recent visit in Newmarket Walmart was a lovely surprise.

CROSBY, Margaret Joan (nee Martin) October 26, 1936 — May 13, 2022, Bracebridge
Joan was born October 26, 1936, passed away peacefully on May 13, 2022, at Andy’s House Hospice in Port Carling with her children, David Crosby and Lisa Martin, by her side. Joan was the beloved daughter of Jack and Grace Martin (both predeceased); cherished sister to Marjorie Hayes (predeceased), Don Martin, Doug Martin (predeceased) and Robert Martin; treasured grandmother to Chris Martin and Hailey Martin; sweet great grandma to Hayden, Brodie, Hunter and Ellie; and dear aunt to five nieces and four nephews.
Joan’s greatest loves were family, friends, and travel. In addition to her family, she will be missed by the many friends she made in her multiple bridge groups, the Kinette club of Bracebridge, Canadian Calorie Counters (for which she was a former National President) and the Canadian Cancer Society (where she performed volunteer work for several years). Joan was delighted to travel to many places in her 85 years including England, Scotland, Hawaii, Bahamas, Jamaica, Curacao and several trips to western Canada. She often said how fortunate she was to do many wonderful things that she never could have imagined as a little girl in Coe Hill, Ontario.
Joan leaves a legacy of love, kindness and caring. As one small example, a family of groundhogs lived under her back deck. While many people would have called an exterminator, Joan gave the groundhogs names and looked forward to the emergence of a new set of baby groundhogs each spring.
During countless winters Joan jokingly said she couldn’t die until spring when the dandelions came up so she would have flowers at her funeral. As dandelions appear in our yards this year, let’s view them as a reminder of the full life Joan lived and the wonderful ways she touched us all.
Visitation has taken place at Reynolds Funeral Home in Bracebridge on Saturday, May 21, from 6:00-8:00pm. A memorial service was held at Reynolds Funeral Home on Sunday,

A man of many talents and a vast array of interests, Roger will be remembered fondly for his love of music, especially playing the fiddle and the guitar, for going to jamborees around the country and always hosting the jam sessions at their trailer, camping, riding his Harley, being with and entertaining his grandchildren, for his faithful devotion as a fan to the Toronto Blue Jays and the Montreal Canadiens and for his interest in collecting and restoring pin-ball machines and juke boxes. Gone too soon but his smile and his music will live on. Cremation.

CROSBY, Wilma Margaret– January 16, 1940 – March 25, 2022
Wilma entered the world to parents, Bill & Pearl McCaw, and their oldest daughter, Fern of Coe Hill, Ontario. From a young age, Wilma was curious, independent and inquisitive. She attended elementary school at Coe Hill Public School, and secondary school at North Hastings High School in Bancroft. A born teacher, Wilma attended Teacher’s College in Peterborough, completed her first years in Apsley under the tutelage of Pat Tucker. All through life, there was one dashing individual–Murray Crosby–who would be her husband of 46 years. After moving to Port Colborne as newlyweds, both Wilma and Murray would teach a great many children in town.
Wilma attended Brock University for a Bachelor of Education, graduating with honours in 1984. Wilma enjoyed her five grandchildren (Allegra. Jessica, Rylan, Jet and Jazmin) as well as her three great grandchildren (Abraham, Owen and Levi). Wilma’s generous nature extended far beyond her own community (Food Bank; Santa’s Helpers), to include many causes: the David Suzuki Foundation, the NDP of Ontario and Canada, as well as the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and Covenant House. She was a caring friend and shoulder for anyone who needed her.
Wilma leaves behind her three, loving daughters: Pamela (Gordon), Jennifer (Rick), and Sarah (Tony). Wilma loved her family, her vast extended family, and all of her dear, very close friends. A celebration of Wilma’s life occurred in May. Note: see Fern Faul obit. St Andrew’s United Cemetery, Coe Hill.

Women’s Institute Prayer
Keep us O Lord from pettiness; let us be large in thought, word and deed.
Let us be done with fault-finding and leave off self seeking.
May we put aside all pretence and meet each other face to face, with out self-pity or prejudice.
May we never be hasty in judgment and always generous in thought.
Teach us to put into action our better impulses straightforward and unafraid.
Let us take time for all things; make us grow calm, serene, gentle.
Grant that we may realize it is the little things that create differences; that in the big things of life we are one.
And may we strive to touch and know the great women’s heart common to us all;
and O Lord God, let us not forget to be kind.

Dave Grant owned the property next to ours on the east side and I probably met him and his wife a time or two, but I have no memories of them. A son inherited the farm, and they had a bus business for awhile. A grandson build a house on the property. I was by then an adult and sold him my favourite mare, cause I was moving elsewhere.
Apparently David F Grant was a soldier in both World War I and World War II. His war record has yet to be found.

GUNTER, Charles `Howard`, Born Jan 14, 1910 in Coe Hill, Wollaston Twp, Hastings County, Ontario, Died Feb 14, 1997.
His wife Hazel nee Sobey. March 26, 1916 – April 17, 2005. Two children: Heather & Allyn.
Howard did many things over the years, and developed the local telephone service. I remember our party line was 3 long rings. People on the same phone line might pick up their phone when they heard a call and listen into the conversation to learn the latest news. Howard also ran movies weekly at the Town Hall when I was a child and I often begged Mom for the 25 cents entrance fee. It was our only entertainment. He also showed educational films when visiting schools. He went fishing, and enjoyed snowmobiling in winter. I would occasionally see him inside the Post Office, as he delivered rural mail. He also developed an insurance business with his wife. The family lived in a house in the centre of the village, just below the hill from the Gospel Church. Hazel would collect funds to buy a community wreath and a card for someone who had just died. I remember stopping at the house a number of times to add funds to our account. She would make out a card with people’ names on it, and arrange to have a wreath purchased. Thank you.
Their daughter, Heather Campbell has written several books about her memories of Coe Hill and area, and has written a humerous collection of experiences in a weekly column in several newspapers.
Howard’s siblings included: Mary (Neil Whitmore), Roscoe (Doris Fisher) and Marjorie (Hubert King).
Howard and Hazel are buried in St Andrew’s United Cemetery, Coe Hill, Ontario

“Ivan Gunter has traced his existence back to the American Revolution. The Gunter story begins with Conrad Gunter of Germany, who was born in 1732 in Hanover. He went to Liverpool in England to get a job as a shipwright. In 1781 he showed up in the British Army muster rolls in Warwick, New York as a carpenter. After the American Revolution, Conrad and his family moved to New Brunswick with other Loyalist. He died there. His son, Abraham moved to Prince Edward County where he settled for awhile. Then he moved to a place near Wooler.
His sons migrated north, one settling in a place name Gunter, while son William Gunter made his home in Millbridge. William later moved to Coe Hill. His son William Henry, his grandson Richard, and his great grandson, Ivan, lived in the village.
On his mother’s side: The Empeys left New York and settled in Eldorado. Ivan’s great-great-grandfather received 200 acres of good farmland on the ridge that runs through the rocky hills north of Madoc. Ivan’s grandfather was John Empey, whose daughter, Laura, became a school teacher. She took a job in the village of Coe Hill. where she met Richard Gunter. They were married in 1919. The marriage of two Loyalist famlies produced: Ivan, his brothers Blake and Dale and sister, Shirley.
Richard and Laura Gunter operated a post office in Coe Hill for 23 years. They were killed in a car accident on their way to a holiday in Florida in 1952.”

HANNAH, Archie April 4, 1904 – Oct 20, 1986
Son of John Hannah and Annie Ferguson.
Archie was raised on a pioneer farm deep in the bush off the South lake Road. He came to town to live for many years with Carmen and Hilda Woodbeck on their farm on the west end of the village. When Harold Crosby’s wife died, he welcome Archie to live with him in the house across the road from ours. By then, I had livestock and wanted to take more education in Toronto. Harold decided to remarry, so Archie came to live in my house for a few years. He was an older senior. After I married, Archie lived with us until after my first child was a toddler. Archie made the move to a nursing home in Deseronto. However, he disliked the place and for other reasons, I brought him home. He died in Bancroft Hospital not long afterwards from several strokes. Thank you, Archie, for many happy years together.

HARDINGE, John R Oct 31, 1854 – Sept 12, 1938
Dr Hardinge was born in England and was the son of Josiah Harding and wife Susan Sewell. He came to Canada and moved to Coe Hill in 1880. He had a homeopathic medicinal healing practice. His daughter, Mattie, carried on for many years afterwards, offering treatment by little packets of herbs, which our family appreciated. She was also helped by her sister, Helen (Nell).
John married Ida Roblin Dec 24, 1881, and they had many children including: Susan, Minnie, Josiah, Marion, Martha, Thomas, Helen (Nellie), Mary, Genevieve, Arthur, William and Dorothy Hardinge, all born in Hastings County. A family tombstone with many names on it is provided.
Dr Hardinge started the first telephone line. Although crudely run, often strung along the tops of fences it helped him stay in touch with patients. His house was at Salem near the corner of Rose Island Road and the cemetery where he and his family are buried. Salem Pioneer Cemetery, Rose Island Road, Coe Hill, Ontario Doc Hardinge is remembered also as a Justice of the Peace and one of the leading citizens in the area.
Note: Although we were glad for Hardinge’s powders, it was Dr Stead Lumb that was the main doctor during our family time in Coe Hill. He would even come to the village for emergencies, but otherwise, we would visit his clinic in Bancroft on the main street close to the four corners on the hill, across from the hotel.

HOARD, Graham 1942 – 2023
Graham Charles Hoard of Calgary, AB, passed away on Monday, October 9, 2023 at the age of 80 years. Born December 23, 1942, to Charles and Hazel in Bancroft Ontario. He was raised in Coe Hill at the Ridge, until he went to Queens University and graduated as a CGA from University of British Columbia and served 30 years in the public service. Graham is survived by his wife Joan, sister Carol, daughter Anne-Louise and her loving husband Jim, son David, grandchildren Chris and Sarah, and his number one cat friend Bella.
Graham built a family, a world, a home, and will be remembered lovingly. To anyone who knew him he could be a very silly boy, and would have a story for everyone. He could talk for hours about silly things he did in school, or things that he loved like golf, watching sports, classic cars, Swiss Chalet, or his family. He had a ravenous appetite for reading and always had a good stack of books, a newspaper, and Sudoku for variety. When it came to a round of golf, very little could keep him away from a chance at spending time with friends. First and foremost, he loved celebrating food, family, and support, with his wife Joan during their 56 years of marriage.
He always took care of the people he loved. He is still with us in so many important ways, with the kindness and influence he had on others. We would thank you to celebrate his life with us, to tell his stories, and hold his friendship as close to your heart, as he would hold his favourite cat. A Gathering was held at McInnis & Holloway (Crowfoot, 82 Crowfoot Circle NW, Calgary, AB), on Tuesday, October 17, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. My brother, Sam, attended.

IRISH, George Delbert May 15, 1925 – Jan 19, 2023
Delbert was the first born son of James Stanton Irish and Jennie Werden (1905-1985, daughter of Mary Ferguson, a sister of Sam Ferguson). They lived with Delbert’s grandfather at his farm at Rose Island Road. When the farm was sold, they moved to Coe Hill and Delbert’s dad went to work for Armstrong’s Mill at Carson Lake near Millbridge, Ontario. Delbert quit school and went to work at the mill with his Dad. The family moved to Millbridge and Delbert and his brother Leslie lived there until 2013 when they moved to an apartment in Madoc. They moved to Caressant Care Nursing Home in Marmora in 2019.
Delbert did cut and sell slab wood; but his career continued to be the mill. While in Millbridge, the yard was filled with Delbert’s wind powered hand carved ornaments and his flowers. A nature lover, he fed the birds, turkeys and deer. The two brothers loved to visit friends and neighbours and were well respected by the community.
Delbert was a self taught, very talented carver who entered his work in County Fairs, winning prizes every year. His greatest accomplishment was an accurate carving of the Armstrong Mill and out buildings complete with furnishings, animals, vehicles, sleighs and logs which took him 30 years to finalize. They are on display at the North Hastings Museum in Bancroft.
He was predeceased by his parents. His brother Leslie, at 92, still lives at Caressant Care. He will be remembered by his brother Leslie, his relatives, long time friend Oscar Anderson and his many other friends.A special thank you to the staff at Caressant Care Nursing Home who gave him super Care while he lived there.
Visitation was held at Rushnell Funeral Home, Madoc (McConnell’s), 112 Durham St. S. on Saturday, January 28, 2023 from 12 noon to 1pm. Service followed at 1pm. Reverend Michael Rice officiating. Spring burial St. Andrew’s United Cemetery, Coe Hill.

IRISH, Thomas Leslie “Les” July 22, 1930 – April 19, 2023
Les, the second son of parents James Stanton Irish and Hannah Jane Irish (Kelly; she went by Jennie) was born at his Grandparents farm at Rose Island. He was 5 years younger than his brother Delbert and they were best friends all their lives.
The family moved to Millbridge, Ontario when James went to work at Armstrong’s Mill at Carson Lake. The ” Irish Boys” as they became known, went to work at Armstrong’s Mill when Les turned 16, and remained there until it closed. He then went to work at Wilberforce Veneer Plant for 30 years.
The Irish Boys lived in their house in Millbridge until 2013. While there, they worked, crafted and visited with friends.
In 2013, they were talked into moving to an apartment in Madoc where Les continued to cook for Delbert and himself. Due to failing health, they moved to Caressant Care Nursing Home in Marmora in April of 2019 where they remained until they passed away – Delbert on January 19, 2023 and Les on April 19, 2023.
Les was predeceased by his parents and brother Delbert.
He will be remembered by his cousin Gayle (Darwin) Weichenthal, his friends, the staff at Caressant Care, Sandra Peters, and long time friend Oscar Anderson who knew the Irish Boys for 84 years.
We, the Irish Boys’ friends, would like to thank Dr C and the Marmora Caressant Care staff for taking such excellent care of both Delbert and Les for the last four years. A special Thank You to Sherrie Fluke who became like a daughter to Les.
Visitation was held at Rushnell Funeral Home,112 Durham St. S., Madoc on Thursday, May 11, 2023 from 10 am to 11 am. Service followed at 11 am. Reverend Janice Chrysler officiating. First four children above born in Hockering, near Norwich, in Norfolk, ENGLAND. David arrived in Canada in 1882 and spent a year trying to find a place to live in Hastings County. His wife Anna arrived with their four children in 1883. After a time in Millbridge, the family made a winter move to a log shanty on 100 acres in the bush further north. Coe Hill became their main shopping and social area. They raised a family of eight children on their farm.
Katherine Leveridge married C Tivy (d 1908) , and Anna’s grandson, Louis Tivy wrote the book, Your Loving Anna. He was born on Anna and David’s farm. His book provides a copy of some of the letters that Anna sent to her family in England about their early pioneering efforts.Their little farm in Wollaston Twp over time did prosper, and a much better house was build.
Anna’s two sisters came to Canada. Mary and her family made a home in Trenton. Gertie came to Coe Hill to live with the Leveridges and found a husband in Coe Hill, an immigrant from a good family in England. Harry Boothby and Gertie opened a store in the village and had a good life together.
David and Anna moved to Belleville when he got a job there in later years. The Leveridge farm was later taken over by their son, Frank, who married Mary Tivy, and then went off to war. The farm remained in the family, but a spot where nobody lived for any great length of time. It has since disappeared with the passing of time. I remember walking the fields and enjoying this lovely, deserted spot in the hills of North Hastings.
Anna’s daughter, Gertie, married into the Hewton family. When she became a widow , she first moved to Trenton, then to a nearby village of Carrying Place. David and Anna spent their latter years with her. Katy married Charles Tivy, but lost her husband when their children were small. She would later marry M. J. Wilson. Florence chose a local blacksmith, Joseph Hawthorne , as her partner for life. Lily stayed single, as did Edward.
Edward and Arthur went to Northern Ontario, settling near Emo, along the Rainy River west of Fort Francis. Johnnie later followed them after he returned from the war and is buried in Devlin Cemetery. Johnnie had married Mary Agnes Tivy (1880-.1936) Edward is also buried with them in Devlin Cemetery.
David and Ann rest in Carrying Place Cemetery, on the rise of a hill overlooking the beautiful waters of the Bay of Quinte, or westward of the corner of lake Ontario known as Wellers’s Bay

MACMAIN, Annie “Marie” Feb 20, 1933 – Nov 5, 2018
Born near Coe Hill in southern Ontario, Marie was the oldest child of Alexander and Gladys Pattison. Mom was raised on a pioneer family farm near Timmins with her six sisters, two brothers, eleven half-sisters and nine half-brothers.
Marie married Allister MacMain and raised ten children – Lois, Mark, Hope, Faith, Daniel, Angel, Darleen, Orion, Luke and David. The family moved to Kelowna, BC and later to Vancouver Island where Marie’s caring, nurturing personality extended to seniors when she went to work as a care-aid for her friend and employer, Mrs. Stewart at Acacia Ty Mawr retirement home in Shawnigan Lake.
In 1978 Marie met the love of her life, Lloyd Jensen with whom she spent the next 15 years traveling and enjoying getting to know the many grandchildren she loved. Her handcrafted gifts of elaborately dressed wedding dolls, barbie tents, children’s furniture and much more are treasured by her grandchildren.
Her time spent each winter in California with her sisters and brothers became the highlight of her retirement as she reconnected with her beloved siblings. Her sense of adventure kept her walking and exploring into her eighties.
Survived by her children, her many grandchildren, great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild, Phyllis, Marie will be remembered as a strong, independent woman, a loving mother, sister, auntie and a doting grandmother, Hardworking, honest and kind, she left a legacy of strong-willed responsible children and will be missed by many. A Graveside service will be held Saturday November 17, 2018, 11:00am at Shawnigan Lake Cemetery. (published Cowichan Valley Citizen), BC

MACNAUGHTON, Mr. & Mrs. – remembered from my childhood, a Scottish couple who lived just a little distance west of the village on south side of highway 620. He had lost a leg, and had a white prothesis, which scared my little brother when visiting. This photo is outside our Coe Hill home when she obviously visited Mom. The couple were already very old when I knew them as a child. Their house was hidden in the trees and not seen from the highway.

Fred and Effie lost everything during Aug 30, 1947 tornado that rolled through Lower Faraday Road, and wiped out the several farms in its path. They moved that November closer to Coe Hill to take over the Herb Marshall farm. Years later I remember buying a Longhorn Highland calf from there, who was later bred there and produced another calf at my place. It was a bit difficult tying them in the barn with chains around their neck, as those horns were very long and pointed. I went to school with Una Marshall in Coe Hill Public School, and remember her older sisters. See also Faye Campbell obit.

MASTERS: Evelyn Emily Jean McBRIDE. May 15th, 1932 – March 7th, 2020
Evelyn Emily Jean McBride was born on May 15th, 1932 in Coe Hill, Ontario, and was the second oldest of Clarence and Emma Master’s four children. She was known as Ev, Grandma, and Nana. In October 1951, Nana met Poppa (Willis) and in August 1952 they were married. They had the greatest honour of spending the next 67 years together and raising five amazing children: Brian, Steve, Doug, Charlene, and Cathy. They were blessed with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Nana always said there was nothing more important than family, and she meant it – everyone was always welcome without notice, and the door was rarely locked.
Nana and Poppa and their kids were the first official family of Logan Lake after moving from across the country to work at Lornex Mine. She loved to knit, sew, crochet, paint, cook, bake and craft and was a tireless volunteer with the ladies auxiliary to the church and at most organizations in Logan Lake. She enjoyed travelling to Palm Springs, Arizona, and Mexico, and loved to go camping in the camper. She was an accomplished curler and was the President of the Logan Lake Seniors for years. She also worked for the Pioneer Newspaper, was Assistant Postmaster, and did Home Support. Nana loved Jesus, musicals, movies, hummingbirds, the Blue Jays and Leonard Cohen.
Over the course of her life, Nana overcame many obstacles, including surviving polio as a young teenager in the 1940s against all odds. She later beat cancer multiple times and lived with arthritis, vision loss, and in later years dementia, but you never knew a more kind, funny, or genuine person. On Saturday, March 7th at 8:20pm after a beautiful sunset, Nana peacefully finished her race surrounded by family and went to be with Jesus.
Nana will be greatly missed by her devoted and loving husband, Willis, along with her brothers-in-law Russell and Laurie, her sisters-in-law Pearl and Doreen, and her beloved children Brian, Steve (Linda), Doug (Cindy), Charlene, and Mike. Her grandchildren Michelle (Pete), Jer (Tammy), Sandie (Stu), Ding Ding (Vicki), Hez (Jonathan), DD, Buckaroonie (Angie), Little Jon, Tick (Derek), Tinkerbell (Andy), Sprout, Tuffy, Foo Foo, and Kat will forever miss her, and so will her great-grandchildren Holly, Zack, Sierra, Brady, Carter, Corrine, Declan, Haylie, Kaytlin, Doug, Brooklynn, Cooper, Emma-Lee, Matty, Haye, Zao, Moss, Jasper and her little dog Lexi. Poppa says “the greater the family the greater the joy, the greater the family the greater the sorrow.”
A celebration of Nana’s life, on the 16th of May, at the Meadow Creek Golf Course in Logan Lake, British Columbia.

He owned the house and property in the west end of the village across from the current park, and just a few houses east of Wannamaker’s store, on that same side of the main road. The outdoor skating rink was built beside or on his land north of Bill Crosby’s pool hall.

MCCORMICK, Thomas “Tom”
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Thomas “Tom” McCormick announce his passing on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, in the comforts of his home with his beloved wife, daughter and son by his side. Tom was born June 28, 1948, in Fort Frances, Ont., to Edward and Margarit McCormick. He met the love of his life, Joanne Gouliquer, in 1970, and they married on May 26, 1973. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this past year.
Tom and Joanne welcomed the early arrival of their daughter Adele in December 1973, and in June 1977, welcomed the arrival of their son Thomas Jr., “Yogi.”
Tom was a hardworking man his entire life. He started his first job with CN in 1965, setting up signal systems when they established the CTC in Toronto. After this, Tom moved to Selko Mining, putting up power lines from Ignace to Atikokan; worked as a machine operator for George Armstrong Construction, then moved to Camp Robinson with his little family where he worked skidding for Minnesota Pulp and Paper. Tom applied for CN and started his career with them in June of 1975. Tom retired from CN in 2002 with an accumulated work history of 30 years with them. Tom was the chairman for the local BLE union for a number of years; assisted in the establishment of the Dawson Fire Department where he served as Chief and firefighter for several years as well. When he wasn’t busy working his full time job, Tom’s love for carpentry kept him busy. Whether he was helping his father-in-law with multiple building projects or working on various building projects throughout the Rainy River District, he always kept busy doing some type of carpentry work. Tom was always ready, willing and prepared to lend anyone a helping hand whenever they needed him. His latest project, at the age of 72, was the building of an owner’s cabin at a private fly-in resort that he completed with a crew of three in 2020.
Tom was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandpa, uncle, great-uncle and friend. He would drop everything to ensure that he was there for his family. He loved his family tremendously and travelled across Canada to visit, support, help, console, and be there for his family. His love for his family and friends and willingness to do anything for them was evident in every action. Tom is described as the one who always ‘showed up’ for everything.
Tom was an avid outdoorsman. This was one of the reasons that he loved working for CN so much. He could be in the open air and enjoy nature as he worked. He loved fishing, his yearly hunting trips with his brother Al, his son Yogi and numerous nephews. Tom wanted to be in the comfort of his own home to the end of his life as he loved being able to be with his loved ones, watch the river flow, listening to the singing birds and see nature all around him from his deck and living room views.
Tom is survived by his loving wife Joanne; his daughter Adele (Floyd); his son Yogi; grandchildren Amelia and Devin; his fur grandbaby Maxwell; sisters Cheryl Hughes and Leeann Arden; brother Cliff (Lorraine) McCormick; brother-in-law Brian Peacock; sisters-in-law Jean Moore, Robin McCormick, Linda McCormick, Betty McGuire and Gail Kelly; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews who he held close to his heart. Tom will be missed by his family more than words could ever express.
Tom was predeceased by his parents Ed and Marg; his mother- and father-in-law Tony and Rose Gouliquer; his brothers Jack, Al, Brian, Barry, and Len; his sister Marilyn Peacock; brothers-in-law George Arden, Marcel Gouliquer, Brian Sullivan, Ken Hughes, and Roger Tetreault; sisters-in-law Eva McCormick, Mabel McCormick, Darlene Armitage, Lucille Gouliquer-Sullivan, Karen (Susy) Gouliquer, and Anita Gouliquer and his fur babies Dottie and Zoe.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 14, 2023, at Our Lady of the Way Catholic Church in Pinewood at 11:00 a.m.

MCILLROY, Michael 1959 – 2024
Peacefully in his sleep on Friday, April 19, 2024, at age 65. Michael was predeceased by his beloved mother Joan Fraser, his grandparents Frank and Elva Fraser of Peterborough, and his Uncle Ed. Mike was gregarious and loved being with his friends at the lake in Coe Hill. A former league hockey and baseball player, he followed the Petes, the Leafs, and was a big fan of NASCAR. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of sports stats and trivia, and WW II. He liked working on his cars, watching Youtubers work on their cars, the antics of his cats and dogs over the years who shared his home, and old B&W war movies and tv shows. Mike was an old school guy to the end, who proudly eschewed owning a cell phone. He valued sportsmanship in the rough-and-tumble of athletic competition and maintained good humour in the face of life’s later hardships. A dear friend who will be missed by many, especially Janet, Doug, Marla, Dave, and Rick. Much thanks and love also to Wendy. Cremation has taken place. There will not be a service.

Bill lent me a Hereford, heifer calf the summer I was in 4-H, when I so young. I am deeply grateful for that, enjoying teaching her how to lead, and learning how much to feed her. 4-H was a positive experience for many of us, with many bus trips to learn how to judge cattle, and other livestock. The calf went home that fall, but I have loved farming to this day, partly because of this early experience. Thanks, Bill. The couple had two boys and a girl.
